I'm getting better performance on my parents MWEB non-shaped 2meg uncapped account these days.

I am at my parents house over the holiday season and they are owners of a 2meg uncapped mweb account (on a 4meg line, Telkom upgrades) My usual modes of operation on the internet is gaming and gaming related content consumption (twitch.tv, steam, YouTube, battle.net)

In my 1 week of being here I have switched between my own 2meg business account and my parents' 2meg standard MWEB account. And right out the bat MWEB is better at streaming twitch and YouTube (never buffer 480p). Both accounts are fine for gaming but I would give Afrihost the edge in terms of lower pings. I also give Afrihost the edge on Download speeds (ill put this down to unshaped-ness)

I really wish that my twitch would work fine. It sucks back in my CPT house and it sucks in my parents' PE house where the line stats are far better (good tracerts, 30 SNR, high theoretical sync speed) but still.

If twitch worked man, I would be such a happy Afrihost customer. One more thing, DSTV Online also stinks on any non-mweb account, I wont burn Afrihost for that one though.

Sorry to hear the account isn't performing to standard :( Strange that so many protocols aren't 100% on your end, have you contacted our Support team at all on this?

ONCE AGAIN ON PUBLIC FORUM OUT OF PURE DESPERATION.

1ST TICKET:

I've been experiencing serious connectivity problems for almost a month and opened my initial ticket with Afrihost on the 29th of November explaining that I'm suffering from extreme SNR fluctuations, especially when raining, indicating damaged lines or something of the sort. This causes me to desync and stay desynced for hours. I specifically asked for a telkom ticket to be opened. 4 DAYS LATER I get a reply that a Telkom ticket has been opened. NOTHING comes of this.

THE 2ND TICKET:

Current level of service is a joke. NOTHING came from previous ticket opened almost 2 weeks ago.

SNR's drop to 0 when its raining indicating damaged line. No contact from Afrihost or Telkom was made after opening of last ticket.

SNR on my DSLAM has degraded over the last few months. I was syncing at 10MB/s stable (SNR up and down above 10) at the beginning of the year and now I struggle to sync at 6mb/s.

There is obviously something wrong with the copper going to the DSLAM or the DSLAM itself.

Can this please be addressed before month end so I can know whether I should close my account or not before being billed.

AND THE AFRIHOST TECH SUPPORT ANSWER TO MY PROBLEM (The following day)

Good morning

I trust tat you are well:)

Please note that I have stabilized your line.
Please reboot your router and test.

Freaking out I reply again asking if my previous ticket was even read. I mean a line stabilization? After all the info I gave in the ticket! Really? Do line stabilizations change the weather as well?

Another 4 days go by and I get this:

Hi *********

I trust that you are well.

Kindly note that your line fault is acknowledged by Telkom.

It is what they term ' Linked" denoting a major cable issue( in most instances).

I have asked them for a progression update.

Thank you for your patience.

At this point i was at least able to sync at 1mbs allowing me to get some work done, but less than 24 hours later and boom, line's gone to **** again and I can barely stay synced for a few minutes.

My job occupation requires me to be online 24/7. I'm literally losing money for each minute I'm offline. Hence the business uncapped. (Yes I do have 3g backups which I have had to top up a few times this month)

I understand its a Telkom related error, the Afrihost staff I dealt with however, not so much.

I pay Afrihost to manage my line, as I understand, taking responsibility for the line as a product.

Can I please get some sort of help or at least some form of non template communication!?

Regards.

With your line issues as mentioned above, what happens is solely up to Telkom to [try to] resolve. Somewhere along the line your cable gets wet and obviously doesn't like it. It's a bitch to get it fixed, and getting some response [from Telkom] is hard at the best of times. Afrihost will of course be dependent on a response from Telkom before they can do anything further for you.

As stated I understand this.

My problem is that Afrihost themselves failed to see that its a telkom problem from my support tickets. Just doing a stadard stabilization to solve my problems.

Furthermore you can see that the response time and gaps between communication(and or lack thereof) is pathetic at best. If I wasn't paying Afrihost for line management I would have been breathing down someone else's neck, but this combined with previous unmentioned problems with Afrihost throughout the year has taken me to the edge.

That's why you never give your line to an ISP. EVER.

Strange reading this guys, we didn't see any issues in Durbs last night. Could you guys PM me with your DSL username and the time you noticed the drop?
I'll have a look at it from there :)

Please PM me your info. Rain can most definitely have an affect on your connectivity and internet. If copper is degraded or exposed along the route this causes latency if the issue isn't too bad or dropped connectivity all together.
I'll need your DSL line number to have a look at this further and have your fault escalated where possible.

So, all of a sudden slow pings again, and the classic symptoms of exchange congestion. Will it actually be exchange congestion this time, or not, as it was also not the 2 times I have had these symptoms?

Please check this, I am in Centurion, and it is very unusable at the moment:

And confirmation from IPC that it is exchange congestion would be nice, not assumptions.

MTN seems broken today. Cannot get more than 300-400Kb/s on a 10Mb business uncapped.

Fix your silly network Afrihost.

My international speeds are 1mb instead of the expected 10mb according to speedtest.mybroadband.co.za

I then went to SpeedTest.net and got the following result:

Something strange is going on...
