Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

Download speed suddenly dropped to 120KB/s

Ummm but why, surely the network isn't under so much strain

I switched to 10MB Business Uncapped tonight, and moments later the speed just dropped to 1 - 2 Mbps.
My 1GB pre-paid is running at full line speeds.

I phoned in, and they said that Business Uncapped can get QoS shaped at night, Afriman said the likeliness of this is very minuscule, and my luck so it happens.

What are you downloading? Http, nntp, or torrent.

Miniscule chance and two nights in a row on a business account. Sure its just fluke

How weird speed fluctuates between half line speed and three quarters

I was pretty set on trying the 4Mbps account from April. So disappointed to see terrible after hours speeds. Would it kill Afrihost to unshape the accounts 24/7? There already is a rolling threshold to limit abuse.

I was expecting far better from business uncapped according to what Afriman said, specially afterhours, I was adamant to know the performance after hours, and he said that the business account would hardly ever be QoS shaped, they basically perform like the capped accounts, my first evening and it is same and worst then normal uncapped!
Not what I was expecting.

What is going on with the routing?

Why are you routing cape town to Johannesburg and back to cape town?

Afrihost speed was maxed out from about 11PM last night :D for the entire evening.

Still currently busy and its running between 390KB/s and 420KB/s

:D

Yeah also noticed the speed picked up around 12 and got full speed, but between about 8 - 11.30pm it was heavily shaped.

Routing to Mweb also looks fixed, the latency not so perfect.

Hey Guys

Sorry to see a few guys having issues on Business Accounts. I do know some of your from previous issues, am I right that most of you are in the Cape (South) region?

Please drop me a PM with your username so we can look into each instance, but we're also looking into this urgently, as Business Accounts should be performing at premium levels :(

Will post more info as I get it.

Before this thread I was dead set on an Afrihost Business Uncapped account. Are you saying they should appear to be unshaped 24/7?

Yeah - I also want to know or else I'm gonna cancel my order I placed 2 days ago and go to Openweb Gold. I'm in PE by the way.

Thank you sir, it was only between 8PM and 11PM last night that it was virtually unusable? Will monitor it today and provide feedback tomorrow. Having said that still loving the account :D

Seems we're in the same boat then. If I don't get any assurances as to after hours performance on this Business account then I'll have to go with Openweb's Gold Uncapped & Unshaped. I think I've checked out every option:

Mweb Business Uncapped Unshaped - R2259pm
Openweb Gold Uncapped & Unshaped - R1324pm
Web Africa Business Uncapped - R1249pm (throttled after 50% utilisation per 10 days - not unshaped 24/7)
Afrihost Business Uncapped - R1096pm (throttled after 65% utilisation per 7 days - not unshaped 24/7)
Axxess Business Uncapped - R1095pm (AUP renders it useless)

(All prices include line rental and are for 4Mbps)

I've got some feedback from the network guys. It looks like all the unshaped bandwidth took it's toll, and we started running at capacity. We were trying to leave both consumer and business uncapped products unshaped for as long as possible (we left them unshaped for close to two weeks) and in the last day or two started seeing some clients affected by high latency and throughput issues, consistent with us running at max.

We want to continue to run Business Uncapped as unshaped as possible, so we'll be shaping consumer uncapped products as lightly as we can to get performance back within normal levels. As always, we'll try to give as much bandwidth to everyone as possible, but we'll start refining the policies now based on the data we've collected.

I'll post as much info as possible as we start pinning this down :)

EDIT: I've been told that our intention is to keep Business Unshaped 24/7. It will continue to be completely unshaped during the day - guaranteed! We'll reserve the right to shape after hours and when we do so and how we do so will be based on a variety of factors. But the idea is not to shape at all if we can avoid it ;)

Thanks for the response. I'm going to give Afrihost's Business Uncapped a try. If it sucks I'll have to go to Openweb, but I'm really hoping Afrihost works out.

If the other ISP's had more appropriate slogans:
Mweb - "The bare minimum"
Web Africa - "We throttle at 50%"
Axxess - "Throttling not even necessary"
Telkom - "You get what you pay for"
Openweb - "The fault is on your side"
