Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

i'm doing the social media thing now - end of the week I'll chat to my bank about reversing the charge. Product doesn't work as advertised, no sign of refund, and no response to multiple queries.

Group complaints* >>
You could also take it up with ISPA (AH is a member), CPA and even ICASA?

Perhaps motivation for mybb to make an article... nothing like "that" article. Even mweb jumped up that one time it was published on mybb.

**nothing the zerg can not change: Just look at xbox one drm.

:Edit
Sadly it seems that nothing was learnt from previous fsckup. Where AH also went silent as the uncapped went south. Silent is not good, silent is weak.

It doesn't take much to really get involved without trying to fix everything under the veil.

Hi all

While we are seeing heavier shaping be implemented in the South, it definitely shouldn't be affecting realtime services or Business accounts at all.
I know there are a lot of posts around slow speeds from the guys in the South - and I'd really like to investigate this. There are no general issues on the IPC in the region and again, more capacity is being brought on board soon to ease the shaping for the regular Uncapped users.

If you are seeing slow speeds in the South Region, please PM me with the following info:

  • Your DSL username
  • Your DSL line number
  • One Speedtest from your closest server and another to a server in the UK
  • When you experience slow speeds

What I'll do from here is consolidate the info and the account data to see if we can further spot any trends/ deeper core issues here.

I just want a refund, at the very least, a response from your accounts department - I'm not going any of that, it serves no use to me.

Afriguy it's so flipping easy to recreate, why don't you try it yourself

Find a PC in Cape Town run Netflix on your 4meg uncapped, see how it runs terribly in 288SD pic quality or less. Then hit turbocharge and watch it appear in 720p. OR just use another ISP like Web Africa capped account and it'll also show in 720p

If you do this you'll see realtime is shaped.

Our Accounts team will process your refund as soon as they can.

That's not really an acceptable answer, when is "as soon as they can". I haven't even had the decency of an acknowledgement?

At the moment, I have no confirmation that a refund will even be done - so I have no idea if I must carry on using the account, whether its safe to get another account somewhere else because I will get my money back, etc.

I have tried this myself, and can't replicate the slow speeds :(
I use a Business 4Mbps account daily with good results - the same with another locations test I ran with a friend of mine.

Do you have a Business Uncapped account with us? Just a bit confused that you mention turbocharging here.
Around Netflix too, we've seen mixed results. We can't officially support Netflix due to their countries restrictions and work arounds, but a lot of the MyBB guys on here have seen some good results using our accounts.

Sorry, I've already asked our Accounts team to follow up on this for you. Your 60 day, double money back guarantee is being processed by our team - unfortunately I cannot have this sped up.

I was a capped AH customer where everything was perfect (until this IPC issue started in Feb '14)
In Feb I went to uncapped and then to business uncapped to try get better speeds for Netflix.

Anyway, while on regular uncapped, when I discovered turbocharge improves steaming quality, I moved to business uncapped as it is supposedly unshaped. But this only marginally improved quality. Explain that?

For every good result you claim on Netflix, I can provide another post this month from somewhere else that has a bad result. This was never an issue before Feb/March.

Claiming you can't officially supporrt Netflix is a bit odd. All realtime services use standard HTTP protocols of some type. Netflix streaming was not an issue 2 months ago when the service was 100%

Ironically, I had to switch to a WA capped free trial account to download your testing tool at more than 250k/sec on 10mbps line. WA trial account is going full speed via NNTP with multiple connections and getting full speed for the testing tool download. I can't get more than 300-400k/sec on Business Uncapped at the moment. This has only been an issue since yesterday when things suddenly went down the drain.

Results can and will vary with the types of Netflix, Hulu and the likes.
This lies in various ways that either bypass our shaping, use different DNS servers that route traffic differently or other methods. Using your example, Netflix may very well use HTTP or a fairly standard streaming port/ service - it's how that content is accessed and routed determines it's quality.

Ok look it's impossible to discuss technical aspects without sitting in the same room together understanding each others thinking. I don't expect you to anyway :)

All I know is this all worked fine before you IPC capacity issues. With your capacity issues, it only works when a turbocharge was activated. I'm talking 720p on a 4meg line.

Now I'm on a biz uncapped I should expect my line to be always 'turbocharged' because I'm paying a premium for unshaped. I should get 720p on a 4 meg, but I'm not getting it.

I do get 720p when I ran with an IS based account this week.

Draw your own conclusions from that.
