Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

Can you confirm that business uncapped is not shaped? If it isn't, why is the network status constantly green when there are obvious issues?

I don't think shaping is the problem - last time this happened, there was a problem with the CPT IPC which Telkom had to sort out, meaning reduced capacity for traffic going through here. Seems to be the case again - but it's worrying that there's no AH presence in this thread confirming the problem, or a change on the network status page.

Am currently on a 2MB regular uncapped ADSL data account with Afrihost and my ADSL line is still with Telkom, but I have been considering beefing this up to a 4MB uncapped & unshaped ADSL data line (or bundle), but given some of the recent posts on MyBB, I should rather hang ten with going for Afrihost.

Who else offers a truly unshaped & uncapped 4MB (24/7) service with the ISP's out there? At a price that won't need me to go and sell body parts to have it? Any recommendations?

I'd actually take a lot of the posts with a grain of salt. I suspect there are a lot of line issues / exchange congestion issues which are ignored and blamed on AH because Business Uncapped should magically cure all problems.

There is a definite issue in the South at the moment which AH are yet to confirm, but in my experience (and I have done a LOT of ISP hopping) when there are no IPC/Telkom issues, AH Business Uncapped (and by extension also capped packages) offer the best performance of any account in SA, without any ridiculous throttling, shaping, rolling windows or account sharing techniques employed by other ISPs.

hmm, sorry for sounding like I was bashing Afrihost.

They still are the better ISP compared to all the others I have used, I have had awesome support 10pm on a Friday with issues.
Their clientzone control panel also gives you a lot more insight and control over your services.
as well as the ability to do a port reset from your cellphone via the app :)

It is just that lately when providing them with solid facts about certain shaping issues where we are not getting truthful answers, especially when you are paying for the more expensive version of their products, you should at least receive a better experience...

Seems like a lucky dip. They ALL seem to have periodic problems.

Ah ok. I have a half-assed theory that when this happens (IPC capacity is reduced here) that the prioritised accounts like Business Uncapped are allocated equal chunks of the available capacity. Right now it seems like I can't maintain anything over 500-600k/sec on downloads on my 10mbps, but if I were on 4mbps and had been allocated that much bandwidth, I'd think things were hunky dory. As I said, half assed theory, but I'm going with it until there's evidence to the contrary :)

I'll see if it becomes worse or better, as I can agree that even on my standard 2MB uncapped, there are periods of dips in service, and periods of vast improvement where I even forget to worry about getting value for money. Just that the periods of dips in service are concerning as you never know where the real issue lies and whether or not it will be resolved anytime soon.

My business account is still going strong, full line speed 24/7.

You're a lucky fish... I'm not discarding the option just yet, but I want to shop around a bit as well. (Maybe).

True indeed. :(

Have gone through Telkom, Mweb, Openweb and Afrihost.

So far Afrihost has been best, after bouncing between Openweb and Telkom, won't do that again.

I was always being throttled on Telkom, shaping on Openweb was so bad that I could not use the internet during the day, kept being given new accounts to use and was told to move to a capped account.

Unless something goes drastically wrong at Afrihost I will not be going anywhere.

Streaming yesterday was very slow. It felt like sub-384k. To say this service isn't shaped is a lie.

Even after escalating through Afriman - I still remain supportless... Saying I'm not a happy camper right now, is an understatement...

i'm doing the social media thing now - end of the week I'll chat to my bank about reversing the charge. Product doesn't work as advertised, no sign of refund, and no response to multiple queries.

pm Afriguy, I believe Afriman is on leave or is he back yet?

They've seen my posts, I've PM'd them the details they requested, I did as instructed on Monday (again). and nothing since. All I have is another ticket number.
