Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

Got exactly the same issue. Normal traffic is running at 8.5Mbps (normal/full speed) but torrents are almost zero. What I was able to download in one night has taken 5 days to get to 50%. Protocol prioritization is off and it's a Business uncapped.

Was the setting always off? You may want to try switching it off and on to make sure that the settings take :(

Yup, always been off.

Will try switching it on and off again and see if that makes a difference. Thanks AfriMan :)

My speeds are back to normal again.
Not sure what the issue is / was.

I see a few people commenting here about slow YouTube and also slow NNTP. We're busy trying to make any connections regarding these reports. In general we're not seeing this across the network or specifically in the South.

Could you please post me a short PM with what area you're in (City & Suburb) and also what DNS settings you're using. Also include your username and what services are slow for you.

I'm hoping we can find some thread that links these reports :(

I pm'd you. There is something you can look at.
Unfortunately I don't have time atm to test more.
I mentioned Youtube, but my browsing also slows down to a crawl.

Awesome - got your PM and will collate once I get a few more responses :)

AfriMan,

I can't log into ClientZone, this is the error I keep getting:

The target-entity AH\Service\HostingBundle\Entity\DomainRenewal cannot be found in 'AH\Product\HostingBundle\Entity\ClientProduct#domain_renewals'.

Always worth a try :)

Okay I think I've figured the torrent issue out - completely not Afrihost's fault!

Seems like uTorrent released an update recently - mine was set to limit the global upload speed to 1kbps (it's always been set to this). As soon as I switch this setting off, speeds go back up to full line speed (thank you Afrihost). As soon as I switch it back on, speeds drop down to a crawl again. Tried it a few times now and it behaves the same each time.

...so, just a tip in case others report the same thing.

Holy crap, this fixed my issues as well :o Thanks!

I wonder why though :/

Torrents work on the sharing principal. If you limit your upload, the tracker or client you use sees this and punishes you.

Another thing that could be happening is the client links transfer overhead to the limit. This basically cripples the connection as you cannot inform peers about your download information.

Same thing can be seen if you saturate your upload and try to stream YouTube. The polling for DASH playback won't work well and will stutter even though you're only uploading and not downloading.

try migrating to BitComet. Less quirky.

I use uTorrent, and limit my upload to 10kB (to help not saturate my upload which degrades performance), and I can still max my line.

Most clients will adjust your download capability when you start limiting your uploads. It's definitely worth tweaking your settings for the best performance.

Great tip - and glad to hear that you're getting your Linux distros at full speed again ;)

That's exactly it. if no one uploaded torrents wouldn't work. It's amazing how even pirates are that selfish.
