Funny everything is working know I change back to afrihost DNS and it is working know

But I still get no reply from my ticket your service is not as it was last year no afrihost on weekend on my broadband telephone support only to 15:00 chad is not working wait 10 min than tell me all support are busy open a ticket this was at 12:30 on Saturday first reply on the ticket was 18:43 this is 6 hr on a Business DSL

We worked on this for quite a large portion of yesterday, along with MTN to find the problem. It did seem to come down to DNS at the end, though the technical details are well over my head. Seems like it was intermittent, hard to detect and replicate - I battled to get my head around it and I think some of our consultants may have felt similarly overwhelmed.

I do believe everything is resolved now, but if not, please PM me :)

What am I paying for, this is on a 8MB Business Uncapped account!!!

This is really crap service, restarted router, etc never helps. Also what happened to sorting out the business clients that got poor service during the ipc issues, this never materialised?

Speeds seem a bit better this morning, but no help to me when I needed to download stuff last night, not good enough!

Looks like when you ran these tests we were seeing major demand on the network. I'm not sure if we were shaping as we should have on Home Uncapped to ensure that contention was what it should be to ensure low latency and unshaped throughput for Business and Capped. I'll ask our team to look into this :(

I think we only promised that we'd push for the fastest possible turnaround with Telkom to deliver the additional capacity still required in the South and the North.

@afridudes.
If I pause my service tomorrow or the day after, will I still be debited next month?

I think once the billing run has started, you can't pause for the next month, probably only for the month thereafter. You might still get in if the run started a little later, becuase of the weekend - but I would guess not :(

just when i canceled my ow

and want to go to AH
this bad feedback comes up :(

We have many thousands of business clients, and in general they have an excellent experience. It's always best to give the product a trial yourself and judge your own experience.

You can drop me a PM so we can make that happen :)

Just thought I'd leave a comment, found out yesterday that a person can set their business uncapped in increments of 2Mbs. As my line only stabilizes at 8Mbps this has now saved me R100/month as I've reduced my data portion to match.

Question though, is there any way of having Telkom fix the line or improve it to get the full 10Mbps? I know when increased to 8.5Mbps or 9Mbps it runs to many errors to transmit reliably.

will do so

my account will end of next month
so i will just test you guys:)

i gonna get it next month and give my ow to a friend :) thats still stuck on 20gb cap :)

Just to add...my exchange is only peaking at 73% full.
Also torrents dload at max speed, +/- 420k/sec.
Yet web pages refuse to open, saix.net times out.
Spoke to a telkom tech and they said that it could be the back wall of afrihost that is the issue?

Line attenuation is better than normal and noise DB is also better than normal.

I think you can set your line to sync in increments or 1MB (or 1024kbps) on the exchange. If you're syncing in between profiles, that usually means poor performance and latency/packet loss when you burst at higher speeds.

This is usually mostly influenced by how far you are from the exchange, and also the quality of the copper cabling in your area. I think your best bet is Telkom upgrading to VDSL in your area :(

There's no shaping at all going on with Business. As far as I can see, demand was fairly OK, so we shouldn't have seen much contention which could cause "shaping like' symptoms.

Did you run any diagnostics to see if anything was happening in your local area?

Found the culprit! It was my torrent client (Tixati). Switched to a different one and full speed ahead. Who would have thought? :)

LOL. I guess a torrent isn't just a torrent. Also depends on what settings you had on the old client. Some of them limit uploads (and the torrent sites don't like that) :(

Got your PM - this is a weird one. We'll need to test. It could be latency - but reading this again it sounds like it may be DNS related. Which DNS settings are you using?

Not sure which back wall he means? Maybe backhaul? (made this mistake myself a few times) Don't think our backhaul is an issue - at least not to cause symptoms to this extent. If you get your full line running torrents, then throughput should be fine :(

DNS settings are set to automatically.
Thanks Afriman for quick reply....great job!

Maybe see if messing around with DNS helps. Try Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) but also post some stats like trace routes so I can see a little more detail.

May I ask how you found out which exchange you were on and more importantly, its current capacity?

Thanks :)

Good question. As far as I was aware this was only available on Telkom's internal systems. If it's publicly available, would be great to know :)
