Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

I have been doing sample speed tests for July, because like you, I had inconsistencies.

Latency seems to be constant at 55ms,
Download, on a 4 Meg line varies from 2272 kbps to 3305 kbps and average 3030 kbps - so essentially getting 75% of what I am paying for.

I will continue to monitor then chat to AH again at month end.

Same problem here...

What the latency you guys are getting ? Specially in centurion area?

According to support "ping of 59ms and speed above 3Mbps should be okay on a 4Mbps as it is up to 4Mbps depending on line quality".

Ja, support told me the same thing but I told them that I used to get maximum throughput on my line so the "up to" part doesn't apply here, so what's changed now?
The excuse I received was "contention ratio!" Never bothered replying after that...

Terrible AH Business weekend down south here.
Kids moaning about YouTube, very very slow everything...

and on IS backup accounts it is all OK;

Since moving to AH it has been a Norm for YouTube to buffer every now and again.
Tried the WA Home Uncapped over the weekend. First time I have seen an HD YouTube video play the whole freaking way though - without the normal spinning circle interruption - in a long time. Hmmm....

Hulu tonight is exceptionally **** on my 20Mb business account. Stalls, buffers, drop to SD.

Pity it's the 27th else I would have cancelled, will move to WebAfrica Business VDSL 20 next month. They might have that crappy star rating system but at least you can stream on them.

My feeling exactly, we post tracert results for weeks, months, and that's where it seems to end? I have complained about this for I don't know how long, and there has been zero improvement. The IPC capacity issues were blamed at one stage, and now?

The test results we see definitely help us, and where we can replicate these results on our side we escalate them immediately to our team and/or MTN. Where we can't, we have to work with that individual client to try to figure out what element in their signal flow could be casing the artefacts they're experiencing.

ya streaming/youtube very unstable

downloads are all good

and i do streaming 80% of the time so its irritating :/

YouTube should be perfect, especially if you're viewing content that is locally cached or cached within the EU or UK, which is where our international cables terminate.

I assume you're not downloading at the same time though. Have you run any diagnostics? If your latency is high, streaming will be more affected than downloads.

Hi guys...
Got connect to Afrihost 4mb business unshaped uncapped option. But my download speed does not seems to be consistent, Some times its OK while other times it crawls... Doing a line test in client zone says everything is OK. So not sure whats might be causing it.

Sorry to hear this. What tests have you run?

Yes i have. But still, streaming is a pain. Cant watch anything properly with buffering every few seconds

We'll definitely need to look into this. We'll need to review what services are running concurrently and your line performance and see if we can improve your overall experience.

Can you drop me a PM?

Latency seems to be high for a local ping.

Aslo remember that actual throughput depends on your line capability (less Telkom overheads for managing the throughput on the line). Getting 3.3Mbps would be considered average.

I am on 20Mb business uncapped at the moment, and did some logs for Afriman for Hulu.

But even on 20Mb I cannot get a constant HD stream, falls to SD for 30 seconds every two minutes or so.

Will be trying out ISPs in July. AH is good because their business accounts dont have limits, but streaming is important to me and for 2k a month this should be working

I haven't tested Hulu extensively, but I'll admit that at times it hasn't been great. I don't know if they don't peer he same way as Netflix or just have a smaller web presence in terms of mirror servers. We're also looking at whether it's affected by their routing within the US.

@Afriman, 10 days has passed and the critical care team has not received any feedback from MTN with regards to the latency spikes within the MTN servers, I have had enough, I don't think this problem will get fixed, time to jump ship...
I will be looking for another ISP but if the mybroadband forum members know of a good ISP, please inbox me...Thanks

Sorry to hear that this was not resolved. I don't know what the barriers have been in this instance, but I generally find they are pretty good at giving us a quick turnaround on problems within the MTN network.

I'll check in with Critical Care and see if they have made any progress :(

59ms seems very high for a local ping. Anything over 60ms for local is of concern.

Have you run any diagnostics like our Network Test App?
