My netgear modem (under router status) says connected at 10008Kbps/1023Kbps. However this is incorrect as my line speed is 4Mbps or 4096Kbps.
The modem does not get as far as getting as getting an IP address for itself.
However I have confirmed that it is connected, because when I go in client zone and say test my line, it says my line speed is 10008Kbps.... and all the other details are fine:




Is my modem faulty? Is it the line? filters? Exchange? Telkom? Afrihost? Should I buy a new modem?

If you normally sync at 4Mbps, chances are 10Mbps is too high for your line (maybe becuase of distance or copper quality).

Let's drop it back to 4Mbps and see what happens, please PM me your line number :(

Not to be a dick, but these are some of the most scalable and highly available sites on the planet. I really think there is something wrong with your monitoring, because you can never tell where or what is causing excessive load on your network and you always rely on customers having to provide traceroutes for troubleshooting. Just always seems more re-active than pro-active.

As far as I know, my exchange which is only a block away is still the old kind. I did ask 10210 a while back and they said no.

They dug the streets up and laid fibre over a year ago, and is quite an up-market suburb, so I don't know what they waiting for.

A bit afraid to do that as I follow the philosophy of if it ain't broke don't fix it, but I suppose there is no harm in trying TelkomZA as I know how useless 10210 can be :)

I've been waiting for 10mb since they announced.

Ah.
Well 10210 has been saying blah blah no, and TelkomZa took a look, and was like, oh, gimme a sec, and then yeah sure, it's possible.
Thing is it costs them money - they had to send out a technician for me like 4x, and they don't get more money by upgrading me from 4 to 10Meg.

I will be happy if they just drop the price then seeing 4/10mb are going to be separated and 2mb being upgraded to 4 when they upgrade the lines.

The way I understand 10mb is you have to have an ADSL2+ capable exchange, mine isn't, so I think I'm farting against thunder PMing TelkomZA?

EDIT: What mode were you on when you were on 4mb?

My line stats are good enough for 12mb, and it's just the weekest link in the chain that is limiting me.

It worries me that they had to try 4 times to get it right, and this is what I'm worried about, like I said, don't fix it if it ain't broke :)

Oh, yours is NOT ADSL2+ compatible? If so, then TelkomZA will just fart alongside you ;)
Yeah, the best you can do then is move to the 4Mbps linespeed next month when they do the upgrades, and save the R130pm-odd.

Hopefully they do this automagically and charge me old 2mb price seeing I don't have a 10mb option.

Really really really don't want to phone 10210 :)

This is the same problem I'm sitting with. The backhaul hasn't been upgraded to metro-ethernet.

Anyway, tried streaming the GP through BBC iPlayer and it was terrible but Netflix and Hulu were streaming just fine.

It is looking like Afrihost is having trouble with international speeds to Europe and thus some are complaining about sluggish gaming.

My own speed tests back this up as well as poor quality streaming when setting the Netflix UnoTelly Dynamo to the UK.

My latency is fine though.
Downloading from the AH news server at 700KB/s and still getting a 200ms ping to the UK.

I have found that streaming via a UK server to be sluggish. The minute I switch to a US one then everything is all good.

I was able to stream Hulu at 720p but iPlayer was streaming at an extremely low quality which rendered it unwatchable.

I have always had poor performance with iPlayer (read: patchy, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, or buffers etc), with several ISP's, I think BBC have the same problem as SS.

So, I wouldn't be too quick in blaming the ISP but rather the source.

EDIT: I normally waited (forced) until it was available to download via iPlayer and then watch it when it was complete.

EDIT2: It's these kind of problems that is making me keep my DSTV subscription, a lot of money, but at least it works and is in HD!

EDIT3: Never-mind the fact that BBC (iPlayer) doesn't broadcast all the races, and would be forced to look for ****ty streams elsewhere.

Really, I'd rather pay them monies to monochoice just to have that security that I know I will be able to watch uninterrupted (weather depending)

EDIT4: And lets not get started with SuperSport streaming, where that is a big lucky packet these days!

I cannot support DStv's business practices at present. Hopefully it changes somewhere down the line.

I hear you, but unfortunately, in the kinda market we have, we don't have much of a choice, and I demand reliable quality when it comes to F1 :) EDIT: Well, sport in general, eg: Currie cup final! Well Done SHARKS!!! :) (Revenge is Sweet!)

So, I pays the monies :(

I love me some F1 but I draw the line when it comes to DStv.

I'm even considering getting a XBox so I can subscribe to Sky Go instead. Works out to about the same per annum and the on demand programming is significantly better.
