Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

Rate limiting on the accounts is basically paying for a line speed. So if you have a 10Mbps line and sign up for a 4Mbps Business account - you'll be rate limited to 4Mbps.
Well, my speeds have taken a nose dive... I used to get 3.2Mbps + practically all day (witha dip between 20:30 and 22:30) but since Tuesday night it fluctuates between 2 - 2.5Mbps.

It's not that bad because I can still get things done but it's far cry from where I was just a few days ago.

I can't tell if my sarcasm detector is broken or not. The remedy to these issues is simple: Afrihost must increase their capacity. Punishing users for utilising the service exactly as it was advertised is very MWEBish and look how well that turned out.

We don't want to be punishing any users. When we see the higher demand on our network we take the appropriate steps to make sure the most amount of clients receive the best possible experience with us.

If P2P were to be shaped on business what would be the differentiator for the business account?

P2P will be shaped on both home and business. Realtime services will be completely unshaped on both home and business. Those seem like two very similar products being sold at different prices.

You have a point. Didn't think of that.

Ok then. If this is true, can you guarantee that I will not be affected by these issues if I move to a capped account?

The Capped accounts run off the same priorities as a Business account. We want to guarantee that everyone will get the best possible experience when using our network.

Cool.

I know it seems like I'm being difficult, but please explain why a 4Mbps, 300Gb capped account costs R600 more than the Business Uncapped when priorities are identical?

It would seem, depending on POV, that those on capped accounts are being ripped off or the Business Uncapped is undervalued.

That's the way our products are setup. It's entirely up to what the client wants :) If you're never going to go over 300GB/ month and generally prefer a Capped account then you can go with that option. If you'd prefer to have an Uncapped account and use more than that when you'd probably opt for an Uncapped account.

That 300GB account can also be used on with 40Meg VDSL at 40meg, while the 4Meg business account will stay at 4Meg.

Also forgot to mention capped accounts allow multiple concurrent connections. So for example you can have the same account at work and at home and at your parents house.

And that, haha!
You're doing better than me today :) Need some more coffee!

No. HTTP downloads are also shaped on the Home Uncapped accounts. I'm suggesting an account in between with HTTP traffic unshaped, which should be priced at the current business uncapped accounts, and business plus, where P2P is uncapped as well.

I think we're happy with our product matrix as it stands, adding more accounts will add on more complexity and won't be a long term solution I'm afraid :( We think the current layout is also the most fair.

The only difference between the home uncapped offering and your new business uncapped account will be unshaped HTTP downloads. I doubt it would be feasible for AH to create another product simply to achieve this goal. It seems to me as though they are trying to keep their product mix simple.

I prefer what AH offers right now. Few accounts with clearly defined parameters. This seems better to me than what Openweb does with their multitude of product offerings.

I think it's very different, to be honest. While it's a situation that no-one likes, we definitely feel that we are providing the best experience possible under the circumstances. In terms of capacity, there are no quick solutions. Ordering capacity from Telkom is a lengthy process, and there is a waiting time of several weeks (if not months) before any new capacity can go live. Making use of our unused capacity in off-peak hours is a very viable option. If we can minimise the amount of traffic being used by torrents across the board, which can easily be shifted to off-peak hours at full speeds, daytime experience can be a lot more pleasant for all clients on the network, while we wait for long term solutions to be delivered. But this culture should continue, because that gives the maximum benefit of the network to clients in terms of experience and actual bandwidth received.

Mr AfriMan, I'm confused. Mr AfriGuy made me believe torrents aren't the cause of the problems, so I can't see why that would work?

While torrents are always going to be resource heavy on any network, we don't believe it's the root cause of the latency issues experienced this morning/ last night.
