I do agree that you have been trying your best, along with all the Critical Care people, and for that I am very grateful.
If I could, I would take you all out to have a few drinks to say thanks.

But it has been 10 months now.
I think you will agree that 10 months has been about 9 months too long to have a simple line issue sorted out, right?

I do understand that this has been a trying experience, and 10 months is a long time for something like this to drag on. But I think there is obviously nothing simple about it. The reality is there are technical issues which can be very difficult to near impossible to resolve. We've had technicians relay cable, change ports, change exchanges and are still unable to resolve issues that seem to be simple.

At the end of the day, we rely on Telkom, and that is our only channel to keep pursuing the issue until it is finally resolved or improved (hopefully the former rather than the latter).

But I would caution against seeing this as complacency on our side, or even possibly on Telkom's side. From the amount of techs that have attended to this issue, I would think there is something of a complex issue at present here :(

As you can clearly see, there is a problem. The speeds jump around like this on a daily basis, it does not matter if it is raining or if it is a nice hot day.

Have you requested that Telkom move your port? It could be that the port you're connected to is not authenticating as it should or you could ask them to do a hard reset/trip something (don't know the exact terminology) on your line.

Also, given your line stats, I would suggest a drop in sync rate.

That has been done.
And the line speed has been synced to a lower speed.

Well it sounds like everything within reason has been done to assist you.

How does your line perform with another ISP? Mweb has a free 7 day trial account which you could use to test it out.

Want to start off by saying I really don't like Afrihost. When I moved to them last time (standard uncapped) I had terrible experiences.

For the last 2 or 3 weeks on Telkom uncapped I haven't been able to play games online or even stream Netflix most of the time. They kept telling me it was my line etc etc. The tipping point was on friday when I had an important deadline this past weekend and I could barely browse to google, which meant I couldn't work because I am deving against the clients live API. So I impulse bought an Afrihost Business 10Mb/s uncapped.

Just for LOL's, here is a video of what BF4 has been like for the last few weeks for me:

Since then it has been mindblowingly good. I cannot believe how much better it is than the standard Afrihost Uncapped. I haven't had a single NZB (newsdemon) that has completed at an average of less than 1MB/s. Youtube streams 1080p with no buffering. BF4 on Xbox One now has 3/5 signal bars (never saw more than 1/5 before). Netflix and Xbox Fitness videos also stream without buffering.

So if I can ask a favor of you AfriMan, whatever you are doing ATM with these accounts - don't change :P
The one thing that would be really nice to see (and it is confusing that it doesn't seem to be there) is a failover service. Reading back in this thread I see some areas have gone out for hours at a time. For a business account it is pretty important that there is always service.

@AfriMan

Hi. With everyone dumping Telkom Internet and moving to Afrihost Business packages for the no throttling/no shaping connections, will Afrihost have to start shaping them as well to maintain capacity? I'm considering going over as well but I fear a similar situation to Mweb and their normal/premium accounts, where one is shaped/throttled less than the other if you pay more.

I don't mind paying the premium for an unshaped account, but I don't want to have the account for a month or two and then get told they're gonna start shaping/throttling business accounts due to the high volume of users unless you pay more to keep it unshaped.

Can you advise if this could be a problem in the future? I'm a systems engineer and provide remote support, a lot of the time from home at weird hours due to time zone differences, but obviously I game online and stream YouTube a lot as well. I need an internet connection that delivers what I want, when I need it to, not when then the ISP feels like it.

Thanks in advance

On Afrihost's side, yes. They need medals and cases of Bells. Telkom on the other hand needs a few PK's to various ears to wake them up.

I have no intention of ever using MWEB, thanks.

It is a line fault, so how would using another ISP solve that issue?
As mentioned many times, this issue is totally random and intermittent. The line is running fine again, but for how long?

Your trace looked pretty normal except for the one spike in latency on the 8th hop. Can you DM me detail so I can check your line sync as well?

Do you need an address to send said Bells? :)

Seriously though, I've seen some issues continue for several months, and I promise that we really do everything we can to get as much participation from Telkom for a final resolution.

We definitely won't be shaping products that are advertised as unshaped ever. For now we're going to continue to manage our available resources as best we can. We're confident that Telkom will come through with our IPC upgrade soon, and we've ordered a lot more in order to keep us going for a very long time.

While we may not have our best foot forward right now, we are confident that when we do get this sorted, our clients are going to enjoy a much better experience, and the wait will have been worth it in the long run. Remember we're also going to review our pricing once upgrades settle. So whether it's going to be on price or experience (or both) we know we'll come through for our clients in the long-run.

AfriMan, I see all your business accounts are R100 more expensive now... I wanna reactivate my account and bump up to the 10Mbps package. Does this mean I pay the extra R100?

Right now I'm supposed to pay R597 to reactivate my 4Mbps account instead of the R697 it is being advertised as.

Must be a recent change.

Actually makes a lot of sense if you ask me. If you compare the bundle price to data alone price.

Probably should have been done a while ago.

It does make sense but if I continue with the 4Mbps package I keep the grandfathered in price. Just want to know what happens when I upgrade to 10Mbps.

We haven't increased any prices, not that I'm aware of anyway :)
Bundle prices have been updated though - this is to fall in line with Telkoms recent line upgrades.

getting mweb dejavu here, 4Mbps account running at just below 2Mbps during the day... I tried to max out the account by using each of these, as well (as all the downloads simultaneously +- 60 threads...) youtube, nntp, ftp or http downloads
I'll do all the standard tests and traceroutes and also test with capped account later when I get a chance.
saix speedtest shows 2.3Mbps

Have you double checked your ClientZone for any possible shaping? What do your realtime services look like?
