Yeah, RICA's been a really strange one since the beginning, especially because it blocks absolutely no-one who is determined to get their SIM details faked.

Now where did AH hide the option for Protocol Prioritisation? I can't find that button anywhere in my Clientzone, unless it's only in the new one now.

Only available via ClientZone 2.0

Connectivity->Package name (eg 1Mbps Business DSL)-> Under Account overview.

Unfortunately it is the law. At the end of the day I think we also don't always realise how much rampant fraud is prevented thanks to these small (though sometimes inconvenient) measures.

But with pretty much all processes requiring some form of verification these days, it's going to be pretty much the norm :(

You can find the setting in the New ClientZone, in the Connectivity product page.

I thin it really does prevent a lot of fraud and also helps to collate data on people abusing networks for various nefarious purposes. Just think about it though, pretty much every crime TV show talks about criminals using untraceable burner phones. At least we're trying to make that a lot more difficult in SA :)

Yeah, but it all goes through PRISM anyway, so there's less incentive for RICA over there because the US already has a much better system in place than we do.

On a related note, I haven't had proper internet for the last two months. I'm surprised that everything works so seamlessly on the AH Business account. Even when Telkom Internet was good, there was still the occasional hiccup and I'm sure that all those users now on 4MB accounts hammering away at their bandwidth limits for a mere R300 a month is what's causing all these issues.

We all agree that I am on g.dmt profile on the mini-dslam I'm connecting to. The confusion is coming in where we know that g.dmt supports up to 8mb according to the standard, and they have been telling me that 4mb is the max I can go, but somebody said here that telkom supports up to 6mb on g.dmt.

This is what I'm trying to find out.

Sorry I know this topic is not related to this thread so if there isn't an answer, I will drop the subject :)

Ye, I know, it's not you I'm worried about but rather the criminals in charge abusing the system (big brother and all)

The DP is the point between you and the exchange, where your Port card sets the modulation. So even if you are on a card that can support 6Mbps on GDMT, if the DP is set to max 4mbps, they will not be able to raise your profile. Also, even changing exchanges is unlikely to move you to another DP, so it've a pretty vital cog in the machine :(

I have a similar issue here in JBay. The exchange supports 10MB speeds but the connectivity is rendered using a Wi-Fi link to a main exchange in Uitenhage and that means they have to limit connections to a max of 4MB. We don't have as much contention locally as larger towns and cities do, but Telkom won't boost speeds up here until they can get a better backbone sorted out.

Yeah, so do I. On the other hand, contentions are really low so there's not a lot of people going onto torrents and Netflix or using PSN at the same time. Sometimes living in a town with an aging population has its benefits.

I don't think this is entirely true. Last year the DP I am connected to officially only supported 1Mbps but I was running at 4Mbps with great line stats.

I think it also depends on your distance from the exchange.

My router say's I have an attainable rate of 12mb, the mini-dslam (g.dmt) is a block away.

Give Telkom a call and have them test if your line is capable of syncing at a higher rate. I don't know if I still have the email address of the lady who helped me. Will check and PM it to you tomorrow.

They keep saying 4mb - even TelkomZA - but ja, I've given up with 10210, so if you can find that mail, that would be great :)
