What speed you syncing at, and what speed profile are you on?
And do you sync using G.DMT or ADSL2+ Modulation?
According to your stats, you are about 2.3KM away from the DSLAM/IMAX
Those readings are acceptable or average, but the higher speed you sync at the more strain is placed on your line.

Here are my readings

Copper Length(km) 0.38
Upstream 1019 kbps
Downstream 10015 kbps
Attenuation Downstream(db) 4
Attenuation Upstream(db) 4
SNR Margin Downstream(db) 27.0
SNR Margin Upstream(db) 20.0

2Meg Sync and on ADSL (G.DMT)

You are still on a older DSLAM unit connected using ATM links, as with most units using G.DMT

Once you see ADSL2+ you have been moved to a IMAX using ME links and all your problems should go away.

So I would say the problem is not Afrihost but Telkom Exchange Congestion (early stages) it will only get worse from here on out, as more people are added to the same DSLAM you are on. So pray like hell you upgraded before this happens.....

He should PM TelkomZA and asked if they could have Charl call him.

He will ask for a few details like traces to saix.net and some speed tests etc etc (Be sure to provide him with tests during the busiest times, ie when the most notable slow down occurs, usually after 7PM Sunday through Thursday).

He will have the NOC take a look. If it is determined that the DSLAM is running at capacity or close to they will attempt to move him to another DSLAM if one is available. Failing that, an escalation will be lodged for upgrade.

I can connect via ADSL2, but im not happy with the stats, so i keep it on ADSL.

Herein lies your answer, if you have a bad distance to the exchange on top of a badly congested exchange it will only compound your issues - to such a level that you might want to cancel your Telkom line and go wireless (been there, done that - moved house)

Im only 2.3KM from the exchange, and it was perfect about a month ago, now its gone to crap. I think its this whole telkom issue thats causing all of this.

Everything back to 100% after AfriMan helped me out. Although it's a little bit worrying that support supposedly can't change sync speeds when some or other arbitrary limit has been set :erm:

Your trace route did seem little high on the second hop. You should probably do a couple more of those just to make sure if that was or wasn't just a once off occurrence.

It looks like its better, will do the full test later on.

What area are you in? We have had issues with this line for the last 10 months and Hellscum is pretty much f-ing useless at rectifying a fault...

East, Moreleta. Although I pretty know what you are going through. The last time one of the "cards" failed in the exchanged it was a massive operation to get it fixed. Since then nothing has cropped up... thank fully.

However my friends a few blocks from me gave up on telkom and went with the cellular route because of the many issues and their ability to fix it.

Yeah, Telkom divisions aren't equal and can vary hugely (competence wise) depending on where you are.

I've had ADSL since 2009 (4mb) and have only had line issues 3 times up to now.

1. Bad connection to the street pole.
2. Blue and green box was replaced (corroded connections), but was outsourced to a contracter which f'ed it up royally and the whole area ended up with no connection for a month, and with a situation where you see Telkom vans coming out of your ears trying to sort out the stuff up (why use contracters then in the first place?)
3. Still having issues with the street pole, so run a new cable down the other side of the property (easier to rout into the house) with a new pole.

No issues since. Thankfully, the exchange is okay and not congested, stuck on 4mb g.dmt (been waiting for 10mb since they announced it)

One thing I have learnt through all of this:

Be super patient (smoking weed helps).

Phone religiously to follow up and "escalate" the fault, but be as nice as pie (you farting against thunder if you throw your toys out and catch more flies with honey than with crap - philosophy).

Agree that not all areas are equal ... I am in the Durban area - home of the lazy worker.... You know the drill, they dig a hole with one worker and 6 supervisors :D

And while my line issue took 3 years to resolve, I found that being blatantly rude, and asking where I could find a supervisor, or threatening to drive to head office for a visit - worked for me. Telkom eventually sent a guy originally from the WC who fixed up my line in a day.

lol - 100%

Half the okes that were working on the new blue and green box after the contractor stuff up were imported from EL.

I got an email from Afrihost saying that my line has been upgraded and to make the most out of it I should upgrade to a 6Mbps connection (from 4Mbps). So I checked my line stats and low and behold they have improved quite a bit. Running the Fix My Line wizard changed my sync speed to 6Mbps, and I checked the new line stats to discover that they were very healthy. So I go and upgrade to 6Mbps Business Uncapped - the Clientzone claims that the change is instant.

The only problem is that I'm still receiving 4Mbps. A bunch of popular torrents won't even exceed 4Mbps collectively. I have recreated my port and rebooted my router to no effect. How long should I wait before assuming that there is a problem? Do these things normally take a while to kick in?

I know my change was almost overnight - 2 - 4 Mbps.

Just a shot in the dark here - I am sure you know your stuff - but, check your torrent client, it may be set for 4Mpps max download. Sometimes manually resetting the parameters has an impact.

My torrent settings aren't restricting the download speed, and that's just one method I'm using to check if I'm getting 6Mbps.

Things have improved, but I'm concerned that I'm not getting speeds closer to 6Mbps:

I'm syncing at 6144kbps, SNR is 11.8dB and attenuation is 16.5dB. The best speed test was 5.12Mbps.

If the speed stays put I'll have to downgrade back to 4Mbps as that isn't great value for money.
