Then I will just move to a new ISP. The point is senior management from all parties involved in this fiasco, Afrihost, MTN and Telkom needs to come out and somehow compensate for loss of business that some may have experienced because of this mess. It doesn't who is right or wrong. The fact is the consumer got the short end of the stick in this debacle.
Which brings up another interesting point in my mind over this whole debacle... As an ISP, or wait nevermind that, as a company who's SOLE BUSINESS FUNCTION relies on the Internet (i.e. if you are internet-less, you close your doors)... Who in their RIGHT MIND puts all their eggs in one single basket? (not directed at IPC, but connectivity in general, or business operations in general)
What is becoming obvious to me in this saga, is that Afrihost's hands are tied due to their partnership with MTN. The fact of the matter is that when MTN has issues, Afrihost has issues... If Afrihost doesn't see that as a risk... Seriously? Is it really as simple in that Afrihost is merely a reseller of MTN's products, and that in fact, Afrihost does not even own IPC capacity (it is all owned, operated, and controlled by MTN) and Afrihost is just the reseller who's AAA says yay or nay when a authentication request comes in ? (lack of feedback from telkom, lack of a dedicated telkom account manager, lack of public peering by afrihost *itself*, piles and piles of references and reliance to mtn...)
Well... It's not definitive, but it SURE looks like Afrihost gave their IP blocks to MTN to assign to their users (from back when when they had their own IPC if I recall correctly), and MTN now simply assign their IP addresses to customers on MTN's network and equipment. Exactly the same way as Telkom would provide IPC to IS - just another finger in the pie...
TELKOM - IPC - IS - Direct and/or reseller (this is normal)
TELKOM - IPC - MTN - AFRIHOST - Direct and/or reseller (Afrihost).
Charming. More fingers in the pie, ofcourse it means more hoops to jump through and more problems...
MTN is announcing Afrihost's IP addresses, instead of Afrihost announcing it directly, which is why I am making this conclusion. Again - it is merely an observation, it is not definitive. So yes, in reality, Afrihost is a reseller, and does not own their own IPC capacity. This would also explain why they are not forth coming about refunds, as what ever refund we get, will obviously be dependant on what refund Afrihost gets from MTN (if any). Again - *if* I am right, this ENTIRE THING could have been avoided if Afrihost just played open cards from the beginning...
