Afrihost Capped ADSL Feedback (MTN) - New beginning

Afrigenie how much longer do you expect people to stick around when the network has issues every second day? Also are there any fixes to the network coming soon? I'm really dreading having to look for a new ISP but you aren't giving me much of choice.

I must say that even the new afrigeen is just the same for me, pretty poor. I moved somewhere else and would happily come back if Afrihost resolve their issues. Their price and delivery were great, but in a market where you can change every month between ISPs it is not nearly good enough. They need to move away from MTN as whatever infrastructure they are using now has been shocking for months now.

On top of this has anyone got the stupid sales adds when dialing out on MTN? I am paying over R1000 pm on a mobile contract and they think that a sales add is acceptable to delay my outbound calls, I also get bombarded by SMSs from their system? Any company associated with MTN for me will never get my money again when my contracts expire.

omg... really... switched back to vanilla AH from the Afrigreenpoo in (false) hopes... cant find google... really?

We definitely understand the pressure our clients are under and the team are working around the clock. Our priority is to meet our client's expectation and have things are premium levels as they should be.

...pure internet joy is not being able to do a google search?

That's definitely concerning - we did see an issue like this not too long ago, some changes were being made between MTN and Google.

Can you give me an update on this from your side? Seems OK when I test now off the MTN network.

We definitely don't follow any of MTN's marketing strategies, I'm not a fan of that type of marketing, personally. But I think broadly speaking it obviously works for a lot of their clients. Have you chatted to them about opting out of that?

Totally understand re: moving away, respect that. We should be seeing much better performance shortly on AfriGreen (already very positive) so it will hopefully look better from your perspective. If it's easy to move away, then it should also be easy to move back when we can meet your expectations again :)

Seems OK this morning.... well.. I can at least use google now.

Managed to download a few GB from steam in an effort to use up my cap.

My email client seems to be disconnecting every now and then... skype too.

This is all ONLY happening on either MTN AH or Afrigreen... Afrigreen was worse yesterday with regards to disconnects

A heap of tweaks and software upgrades had been applied yesterday which caused a few drops. Seeing much better results today though :)

Okay so my issue is being driven by AH CriticalCare so thankful for that.
Thing is the issues I'm seeing are seriously odd and there are no real answers.
AH has had Telkom check everything on the backend (line, exchange, backhaul) and all looks good.
Performance remains erratic. Seeing issues on test accounts as well.

A fault has been logged for Telkom to check my physical line.
That's fine however the issues don't appear to be physical line related (home to exchange).
It really looks like it is something else.

So I'm putting CrowdResolution to the test :). Wondering whether any of you are a) experiencing the same and b) can shed some light on this.

Here are the three distinct symptoms - [line is in Century City, CPT; VDSL 20mbps; running on AH - AfriGreen is poorer]

Anyway there are three distinct problems.
  1. International throughput is poor, single digit mbps, whilst Local is much better around 16mbps to 18.8bmbps. This is consistent across ISPs, with CrystalWeb having the highest Intl throughput. can’t fathom why local vs Intl is deviating. Given that it’s not ISP specific it might be a clue – perhaps it is backhaul related?
  2. Local throughput is significantly better but fluctuates between 18.8mbps down to 16mbps during the SAIX speedtest. Non SAIX speedtests e.g.: Local speedtest.net tests, show obvious and wider fluctuations. Could this be symptomatic of congestion?
  3. Outlook and other International services stall badly on Afrihost. Outlook doesn’t even make a connection on AH, yet works first time on CrystalWeb. This is certainly ISP related.

All of the above only started last Monday, 20th July.
All tests are on wired to eliminate any wireless issues.

That's definitely not the case, our Capped and Business accounts are not subject to any shaping. They're completely unshaped.

If I was not so frustrated with the level of service from Afrihost this statement would be hilarious. You do shape traffic on capped accounts. Currently you are aggressively shaping Windows Update traffic.

Demand is definitely there for Windows, but it's not being shaped.
Have you tried Afrigreen to see if the performance is improved?

I disagree. If Windows Update traffic is not shaped why is it that when I switch to another service provider or to a 3G device I download at normal speed and Windows Update activities complete timeously. Downloading from other sites and services (this includes Windows related software and ISOs from Microsoft) things work just fine on the Afrihost account. Windows Update on Afrihost is being throttled. You guys have had the same thing with Apple App store updates. For weeks you denied that something was wrong. After enough people complained you finally accepted that your network has a problem and you fixed it. I have not tried Afrigreen but from other posts in this thread it appears that chances are good that things will remain the same performance wise. How much more of this must we take?

Because the demand is there - we know that we aren't seeing the best performance on MS updates. But it definitely isn't shaping, even if it feels like that.

We've generally seen good feedback on Afrigreen, I think it's fair to expect some bumps. Drop me a PM and I can try and get you an Afrigreen account.

The Windows Update service has been around for years. Google Microsoft Patch Tuesday. Every month, like clock work, Microsoft makes updates available to Windows devices. The demand has been there for years. This is not just a Windows 10 thing. Windows Update traffic have been a problem for some time now. This is prior to the 29th of July 2015 - the Windows 10 general availability date. I ask again: If Windows Update traffic is not shaped why is it that when I switch to another service provider or to a 3G device I download at normal speed and Windows Update activities complete timeously.

To say you are not seeing the best performance on MS updates is an understatement of the severity of the problem. Windows Updates is practically unusable on an Afrihost account.

That's what I was referring to though, MS updates as a whole - the experience is poor from our, this is something our POC is being setup to better.

Roughly two months ago Windows Updates was not a problem, Apple App Store Updates was. Now it is the other way around. Remove those newly configured rules from your network appliances and watch this problem disappear. You guys just move the problem around. It is as clear as daylight - you do not have enough bandwidth to go around yet you keep selling and signing new customers. If it is not gaming, it is Youtube. If it is not the Apple App Store it is Windows Update. This nonsense needs to stop. You can try but you cannot suck a golf ball through a hose pipe. How can you sell something you do not have? Is this not unethical?
