Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Hi all, thinking about ditching 3G and getting adsl for home use. Any comments on Afrihost vs Internet Solutions. Looking at capped 4mb line for both. Price difference between the two seems quite substantial, not sure if thats an indication of quality vs cost?

It's all about what works for your purposes. Since you're looking at a Capped account, why not sign up a Free 1GB account and test drive our network. Then you decide :)

I see that my credit card information disappeared out of your system. Is that ominous ?

Also, I was allocated an additional 6GB of data this month, on the invoice, but this does not show on my Data Availability ?

I use Web Africa capped (IS), friend has Afrihost capped - we have even swapped accounts for a bit and there is honestly little difference between the two. I streamed on both without issues, downloaded on both without issues, gamed on both with great latency.

Edit: Oh and you should probably change your name so that your email address is not displayed to the world ;)

Details shouldn't disappear. Will need to look into this for you. Can you PM me?

I guess the product is one component. Then it comes down to price, value for money and service. In terms of price and value, I think our Capped Bundles are tops :)

I sent an email requesting that yesterday, :wtf: thanks!!!!

ThinkBroadband international speedtest results (anyone used this?):

AH capped:

WA home pro capped:

Similar, but WA better overall single thread burst/throughput.

Latency better on AH.

Always good to see a comparison. Throughput seems mostly similar, but that difference in latency is pretty crucial - especially if you're a gamer :)

I have compared WA home capped to the Afrihost account on a very benign exchange and WA is heads and shoulders above AH in gaming. Their latency doesn't come with packet loss.

Evening guys

Telkom are confirming lots of outages this evening :(
The following areas are officially listed 031 - 263, 500, 507, 530, 301, 304, 305, 306, 307, 500, 510 and 032 - 586, 946

I have a 10 meg line with a 50Gb capped bundle. Since yesterday my peer to peer downloads have been throttled. Everything else works fine. Normal downloads/updates run at 1000kB/s but as soon as I try a torrent, it shoots up to 300 and then comes down and hover around 40kB/s , even eith 10000 seeds. Typical throttling. Whats up Afrihost? I thought capped bundles are not throttled/shaped?

We unfortunately can't make that accomodation. However, what you can do is settle your current account and then schedule a future dated payment for the 15th, which will offset August's billing. You can then schedule a payment in this way for the 15th of every month. It will need to be full settlement though to avoid any additional billing on the 1st.

Otherwise, our standard billing cycle will be on the 1st of every month.

Thanx! Will try that after fully re-activating the suspended account. The call centre agents does not seem very helpful to schedule the payment for any date other than the 1st of every month but it would really help me to have the money go off on 15th of every future date after fully settling my account.

Will have to do that every month I suppose. :(

We don't shape or throttle any traffic on our Capped products, so it's not likely. Sounds more like the nature of torrents, you can never guarantee throughput. I've done quite a few comparative tests and it really depends on the seeders line, whether they are limiting their uploads (or are throttled by their ISP) and whether they have the complete file or not. On different ISPs, with well seeded torrents, you can never get guaranteed throughput. A direct file download is always a better indicator. If that shows full throughput is possible, then it more likely to be an issue with the individual file/seeder.

I phoned your helpline and there seemed to be a problem with my port. They tried to recreate it twice with no luck only to be successfull on the third attempt. Also advised me to change the IP by switching off the router. A resync was done and they manually authenticated the connection. I will check the performance tonight when i get gome. What strikes me is the sudden amount of problems you guys have since your MTN merger. Everything was running smoothly until a month ago. I have had more queries, speed loss, authentication errors, high latencies etc this month than I had in the past year. Why is that? Coincedence? I can understand that there can be problems when merging two big companies, but at some stage those problems must be sorted out.

It sounds like this could be an issue with the exchange with recreate instructions not feeding through via the portal. It's important to remember that we've been on MTN's backbone for almost two years already, so nothing has changed structurally in relation to the MTN's buy-in. In fact, nothing has actually happened except on paper because the deal is under review by the competitions board, so there is definitely nothing changing that would affect day to day connectivity.

I just find it strange that all of a sudden everything goes wrong within a timespan of 4 weeks. Curious. But lets see, maybe its temporary.

I think it's probably coincidence. Definitely nothing physical has changed on our side. Same hardware, same system, same people :)

This has happened to me as well. First time it was a port/adsl profile problem. Had to phone Telkom to get it sorted.

Second time it was actually a software issue. The fix for me was to simply uninstall the p2p client and reinstall the latest version. Problem miraculously solved.

Hope you get sorted.
