Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Looks like we had a problem this morning on the network. Somewhere between the East and the North there was a network issue causing latency. We've managed to resolve the issue in the North and our team are working with MTN to resolve the performance in the East.

Apologies to anyone having a crappy experience, I promise we're working on this as top priority :(

I'm very happy with Afrihost in general, been with them for years now on capped ADSL. This month I need to upgrade my package from 20GB+20GB as I need more than double for various reasons - time to do a bunch of cloud backups and set up a new computer with the latest Ubuntu distro. Instead of being cheaper per MB, it only gets more expensive!

The cost per GB to upgrade my account is over R3 (R99 for 27GB to go from 20+20 to 50+50), and this increases the more data I look at buying. At this rate it will be cheaper to open an account at another ISP rather than upgrade when I need more bandwidth. Is it really meant to work like this???

OK, so after mailing for support, going on IM, and posting the above I eventually received another mail (copied below) that confirms that Afrihost wants R3+ per GB to upgrade my package. After many years of being able to upgrade my package when needed, and getting the benefit of a LOWER per GB rate, I'm not going there.

I have a 10MB/s line because I need speed sometimes, but generally predictable data needs. Uncapped is out of my budget, so flexibility in changing my package has been great.

Today I'm opening an account at another ISP as I've almost used up my Afrihost bandwidth. If the other ISP makes me happy I'm going to stay with them at the end of the month, and adios Afrihost.

Hi ######

Well the original fee is R199 for 50 + 50GB, since it is a few days into the month we are are charging you R99 for a pro rata rate of 27+27GB for the remainder of the month. I hope you have a great evening further and enjoy the rest of the week ahead.

Have a great day further and please don't hesitate to contact me should you have any further enquiries.

Regards
Curtis

I'ved replied to your PM as well, but I really don't see how we're getting to R3+ per GB here.

If you're looking at the difference between 20+20GB and 50+50GB, the price per GB drops from just over R2 per GB to R1.99 per GB. If you're only looking at the difference, which would be R110 for 30GB+30GB then it would be paying about R1.83 per GB. You're never paying more than just over R2 per GB at any stage.

R99 for 54GB (27+27GB) is also around R1.83 per GB.

Checked for PM before I started writing. OK, it looked like 27GB only which was making me ill. Maybe Afrihost gets another chance :)

Afriman. When are we getting a VDSL line price reduction?

I see Axxess made the first move. We cant stand for that here at Afrihost

20mb is too slow now so wanting to move to 40mb as soon as you drop the prices.

I'm sure our team are working on something, no official word yet though :(
Still though, I think our VDSL pricing is very competitive.

so in July i was having a frustrating time on home uncapped (posted in the uncapped thread) and decided to give afrihost another chance (instead of cancelling all together) by changing my package to a capped (100gb) instead of the uncapped. and i must say....

WHAT A PLEASURE! I'm not sure why i EVER used uncapped! in the last 2 months i have had 1 issue on the line that was sorted out by a port reset within 30min by a afrihost representative after submitting a ticket on the client portal.

- 100% line speed 100% of the time (even during the day OMG!)
- DOUBLE data
- wife streaming netflix HD AND playing me gaming at the same time with a 160ms ping internationally
- awesome client portal where i can mess around and tweak my own line.
- super quick customer service

good job guys, while the uncapped is taking a hammering at the moment and i see mostly negative posts in this thread, i just wanted to let the masses know that there are people who are having a great experience on the service :)

keep it up, and i will keep throwing my money at you :D

I'm glad that you've found the right product. I know that we've seen some negative Uncapped posts, but by and large we're seeing a generally better experience.

But we'd like to think that each product has it's use, so I'm glad that you found what works best for you :)
