Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Having issues streaming Twitch. Can't stream medium quality. It buffers quite a lot. Switched to WA capped account and I'm doing high with no buffering.

Hope this isn't going to become a regular occurrence like it has with business uncapped (reason I left).

We'll need to keep an eye on it, but I'd also like to get some more details on your general throughput and latency stats at the time that you are testing :(

20Mbit.

Think I will also be moving if it turns out to be IPC related. This happens every few months without fail.

It's not an IPC failure or anything like that, but anything demand related concerns available resources and the demand for resources at any given points. We're looking at how to better manage the demand for now, while we consider other options.

My connection takes serious strain in the evening and especially weekends

I see you hop to your router jumping as high as 5ms, which is already a concern. So it could point to a problem on your local network causing latency which is compounded in later hops. I would want to ensure that you are testing with a LAN cable and not over WiFi.

However, the later hops seem much too high to be just be affected by mild local network latency, so my guess would be that there is either a line fault or congestion on your exchange :(

This is almost certainly IPC related. The conmen at Afrihost are at it again!

I don't believe for a second that the final part of the previous IPC upgrade ever took place. They simply put their PR team to work in order to mislead their customers into believing that the IPC problems had been resolved.

That's really not the case. We've done several IPC upgrades in the time we've been with MTN, which is an investment of several million rands altogether. We've been pretty transparent about the upgrades and the constraints on our network.

Remember that IPC isn't a one time fix, it's on ongoing consideration, based on demand and cost factors. We'll probably do many more IPC upgrades as we continue to grow and add more DSL users, though that also depends on the rollout of infrastructure by Telkom and fibre operators (when we eventually offer commercial fibre products). We have plans in place based on current growth projections for continued network growth, but obviously that has to be continually adjusted as new external factors come into play like Telkom line upgrades, VDSL and fibre access and availability of services that affect overall demand.

Is it just me or is Afrihost capped in Cape Town crap slow this morning?

Couldn't stream the Apple event last night even at a lowly 400 Kbps Bitgravity.

It's a big concern to me when capped speeds cannot be maintained in the evenings, because I still do work at those times. And from previous experience and how long it takes to sort out such issues, I'd rather be told NOW than having to struggle for days and told that nothing is wrong.

At the moment my speed at home is good.

What we're seeing at the moment is that latency is consistent, but there does seem to be a dip in throughput sometimes during that period. We're not seeing high contention, but demand is just high enough to have a small effect. We're looking at ways to make sure we do just enough to keep that demand in check to ensure best throughput and experience overall.

Latency seems mostly normal except for a few spikes here and there. Were all services poor or just the Apple event? I imagine there was a lot of demand on their servers for that content at the time.

Having a terrible experience today... at the office and at home... both on Afrihost. :(

Really sorry to hear this Gary :(
Is everything slow or only certain services?

It's only certain websites. and Direct downloads seem to be OK.
MyBB is one of the slow websites.
When I switch over to WebAfrica, then it's fine.

Yeah, also having issues today and yesterday to a lesser extent. Browsing seems okay, but YouTube streaming keeps jumping between 720p and lower qualities - pretty annoying! Quite odd how it appears to load as normal for a bit, and then suddenly just stops loading for a while and the video buffers until the data starts coming through again.

Only getting 4.5MBps on my 8mbit line via speedtest where I usually get ~7Mbps.

I've also been having internet speed issues all day today. Steam seemed to do an update fairly quickly (I think), but websites are failing to load... youtube is almost useless.

Since I've switched back to Afrihost its been great till today.... so hopefully its not another downward spiral lol

For a capped product, I do not want to be hearing "demand will be managed", I want to be hearing " an upgrade is planned for xx/xx/xxxx".

I moved from uncapped because I was tired of the better half saying "Internet's not working properly". She seems to be saying it a lot more recently.

We did report a possible peering issue with CINX yesterday, which I believe was resolved later in the day, between 4 and 5pm. If you're still experiencing problems, please let me know ASAP :(

That's pretty awful. If you're performance is that low for local traffic then it's definitely not what you should be experiencing.

What troubleshooting or diagnostic tests have you run that I can look at?

That's definitely concerning, and we'll need to look into this if it's still persisting for you.

Drop me a PM or post your diagnostics here so I can take a look :(
