No, I was one of them, and the issue has never been resolved... I still route via JHB as well, also on a new ESR. Telkom also indicated at the time that this is an MTN routing issue.

Lemme see if I can query this with MTN.
Could you PM me your number and any correspondence you've had with Telkom about this please?

Have you chatted to AfriMan about this? I remember (I think) him briefly chatting about this issue last week sometime?
One or two of our clients had previously seen this too and the mis-config for routing was from Telkom's end :(

I send you and Afriman the reply from Telkom via PM and this forum after this statement you made and what you should be doing.

I did a trace now to the ESR I connect to and you see the trace goes to JHB and back to CPT.
Tracing route to 105-237-226-65-esr-lo.mtnbusiness.co.za [105.237.226.65]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 * * * Request timed out.
2 33 ms 34 ms 34 ms 41.181.221.249
3 28 ms 28 ms 29 ms 41.181.221.250
4 35 ms 84 ms 27 ms qux-jh-dca-2.za-b.za.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.165.115]
5 28 ms 28 ms 29 ms jh-dca-2.za--qux-b.za.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.165.114]
6 50 ms 66 ms 42 ms 41.181.180.10
7 28 ms 28 ms 28 ms tb-cr-2.za--jh-cr-1.za.mtnns.net [196.44.31.67]
8 29 ms 28 ms 27 ms unc-cpt-2.mtnns.net [196.44.18.9]
9 91 ms 27 ms 28 ms qux--tb-dca-2.za-b.za.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.184.31]
10 27 ms 27 ms 27 ms 41.181.223.253
11 27 ms 27 ms 28 ms 105-237-226-65-esr-lo.mtnbusiness.co.za [105.237.226.65]

Trace complete.

And to refresh your memory the reply from telkom:

Morning Jannie

Can at least shed some light but do not agree with the response from Afrihost, the fault is between their access provider MTN and SAIX/IPNet.

Now for the details - DSlam was cutover to a new ESR on Friday, the new ESR (BNG - Alcatell) does not respond to the ICMP request so the hop will just show stars It is however not a problem)

Now what Afrihost is suppose to do is ask MTN why is my CPT client routing to your JHB IPC instead of telling you to phone Telkom...

New BNG address - wblv-ip-bng-2 , Afrihost/MTN should log a ticket to IPNet, the IPC provider to rectify the routing

Suspect the sluggish response could be due to the increased route towards the Jhb IPC and maybe even causing the link to congest.

Let me know if I can be of more assistance.

Will do, but we had quite a discussion on PM on the 4th/5th of August if you keep your PM's.

Odd, I only have your latest PM. Maybe you PM'ed AfriMan?
Anyway, thanks for the info! I'll consolidate it with janniers feedback and get it escalated to MTN to see what they say.

So it's day number three that my typically stable connection is miserably erratic.
It's a lottery between 2mbps all the way up to my typical stable situation of 8mbps. :(.
Uncool Afrihost. Been days now! Sort it out please.

Update - Wondering if this is an MTN issue. Afriman can you share what your escalations to them reveal. I've been having a real poor time with my MTN Mobile (not Afrihost Mobile). It's been stuffed today.

Rgds,
SD

BTW here's the situation to www.afrihost.com
- tracert's reveal
  • latency to exchange is in order;
  • nothing untoward on the IPC hop;
  • then things get erratic with some hops showing high latency. [/INDENT]

Code:
Tracing route to www.afrihost.com [197.242.144.102]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1     3 ms     1 ms     1 ms  192.168.0.1
  2     9 ms     7 ms     7 ms  105-236-240-129-esr-lo.mtnbusiness.co.za [105.236.240.129]
  3    12 ms    10 ms     9 ms  ipc-send-tb-3a.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.53.214]
  4    14 ms    34 ms    12 ms  tb-dca-2.za--qux-c.za.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.198.188]
  5    14 ms    10 ms    10 ms  compj-cpt-1.mtnns.net [196.44.18.2]
  6    14 ms    11 ms    15 ms  ct-cr-2.za--tb-cr-1.za.mtnns.net [196.44.31.134]
  7    35 ms    31 ms    60 ms  rb-cr-1.za--ct-cr-2.za.mtnns.net [196.44.31.69]
  8    36 ms    32 ms    33 ms  196.44.31.97
  9    44 ms    45 ms    44 ms  196.30.1.39
 10    34 ms    32 ms    33 ms  196.31.220.21
 11    45 ms    43 ms    44 ms  196.31.63.202
 12    43 ms    37 ms    33 ms  vl9-ah-ha-2.za.mtnbusiness.net [196.30.42.133]
 13    33 ms    31 ms    32 ms  cms-gm.afrihost.com [197.242.144.102]

Trace complete.

- pings are very erratic showing packet loss.
Code:
      Ping statistics for 197.242.144.102:
          Packets: Sent = 15, Received = 14, Lost = 1 (6% loss),
      Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
          Minimum = 31ms, Maximum = 1084ms, Average = 114ms

Then they look better than the above but not at all normal
Code:
      Ping statistics for 197.242.144.102:
          Packets: Sent = 15, Received = 15, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
      Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
          Minimum = 33ms, Maximum = 111ms, Average = 43ms

Latency should be returning to normal in the North and South regions, we're still awaiting some final feedback for the increased latency in the East.
Could you guys keep testing please?

A bit disappointed, Afrihost are cutting us off at the end of the month because of late payments.

The only reason payments were late (by a couple of days) was because the account our Afrihost fees came out of was little used. We had to top it up each month, but sometimes we forgot. The account was always settled by credit card when we received notice of a bounce.

I'm a bit frustrated because we always paid anyway and have been with Afrihost for a year now. Our line is with them and I don't know what is gonna happen with it. Have appealed, but nothing helpful came of it.

I guess this is our final plea :( More than willing to move it to a new bank account, life is busy and sometimes things slip your mind... would really appreciate help here. What must we do with our line if they won't have us? I really hope the ADSL line doesn't get canceled. Overall haven't received much info on what's going on.

Evening

Sorry to hear this :(
If the account has been settled in full there should be no reason that you account got suspended. Do you have a ticket ref# that I can follow up on?

Your DSL line should be with Telkom.

Well the situation in CPT is still poor.
1.5mbps on international and approx. 4mbps on local.
Still seeing packet loss - same as was noted on my earlier post #3926.
Not cool at all!!!
Getting pretty miffed now!!! This has been going on for days!
Afrihost (/MTN) - what's going on?
:mad:

Yes that was the problem - I explained we were doing right by our payments, but it seems they don't want to hear our side of the story.

Assuming the ADSL line is now being moved back?

Second night in a row I'm getting 500k/sec on a 20mbps line on NNTP at 22h30. Hopped onto an IS account and got full speed, and was actually able to stream twitch.tv for the first time in many weeks.

Afriman - now that The Great iOS 8 debacle of '14 is over - it's becoming increasingly obvious the evening issues in the South are still present. I didn't realise how much I'd gotten accustomed to the degraded service until I tried a test IS account, and couldn't believe Youtube and Twitch and other services could stream so fast, in high quality. There is CLEARLY a problem, AH have acknowledged it. I'd like to know if something is going to be done, or not, as the shaping rules you've implemented have obviously not alleviated the problem, and I'd like to move on to pastures that don't require me to curb my internet habits after 5pm if it is going to continue to be ignored.

EDIT - as a matter of interest - does anyone know if Axxess accounts suffer the same service degradation in the evenings?

So much for Capped is never shaped;

Before 8am

After 8am

TuneIn Radio started buffering at 8AM on the dot... unles the iOS updaters all just started their updates at 8AM again.

Time to go.

Cheers.
