Afrihost Tests:

Durban > Capetown (MTN Host & then Mweb Host)

Durban > JHB ((MTN Host & then Mweb Host)

MWEB Tests:

Durban > Capetown (MTN Host & then Mweb Host)

Durban > JHB ((MTN Host & then Mweb Host)

To me looks like the MTN network is lagging...
EDIT: Time was 08:30 not 06:30

I did pick up that we were seeing higher latency than normal in the East yesterday. We escalated this to MTN and this was brought down to normal. We'll keep looking at this until we can see latency performing as normal :(

Afriman - now that The Great iOS 8 debacle of '14 is over - it's becoming increasingly obvious the evening issues in the South are still present. I didn't realise how much I'd gotten accustomed to the degraded service until I tried a test IS account, and couldn't believe Youtube and Twitch and other services could stream so fast, in high quality. There is CLEARLY a problem, AH have acknowledged it. I'd like to know if something is going to be done, or not, as the shaping rules you've implemented have obviously not alleviated the problem, and I'd like to move on to pastures that don't require me to curb my internet habits after 5pm if it is going to continue to be ignored.

EDIT - as a matter of interest - does anyone know if Axxess accounts suffer the same service degradation in the evenings?

There was a notice prior to the IOS8 issue regarding the South and diminished throughput in the evenings, so it was never a hidden issue. The updates which have now been rolled out should help us shaped Uncapped more effectively and also ensure that less traffic that should be shaped is being targeted and this should have a significant effect. We'll have to monitor now to see if the changes have the desired effect and then continue to tweak to optimise performance.

Hi Guys

Just a general note here that we've rolled out some changes on the network management software to optimise traffic management. We're monitoring now to see if they have the desired effect and if it's sufficient to improve performance as we expect.

We'll keep monitoring and tweaking throughout the day, we have a small team working on this and running tests as well. So far, our throughput in the North has been much better. We already saw improvement yesterday and so far this morning as well.

Has improved, but note the differences still in latency between the MTN & MWEB Hosts.

Gaming will be much better if this maintains...

I take issue with this.

It appears there was no attempts made to point out the issue. The notice from 02 September is still up on the website, although one has to scroll down through pages of solved notifications to actually realise this.

Shouldn't the current problems in the South be at the top of the notifications on your website? Not concealed beneath resolved problems....

IN FACT

DSL Status is a big green check, and the same applies to the Western Cape. The notification from 02 September is still open, but obviously isn't causing any problems because the big green tick says otherwise?

So glad I don't have a uncapped acc anymore.

I notice that Afriman ignores any remarks or queries towards shaping on the capped acc's. Must wonder why?

There's nothing to comment on really, the official mantra has been recited over and over again, and shaping or throttling under network strain on capped and business accounts is not done, officially.

You should know how it goes by now.... that is terrible, send tracerout and diagnostics, the network is being optimised and we should be seeing demand dropping and we are currently monitoring to provide optimum awesome experience for everyone... blahblahblah.

Quacks+looks=duck.

On my general reporting I'm seeing stable latency. We'll keep testing, cause demand is still higher than we'd like to see in the East and we're working on stabilising that ASAP.

These are all capped accounts, Leatherman. Which is why so many people are upset...

Traffic management on capped accounts
I Know, what I want to point out is instead of upgrading their network. They prefer to optimize the software doing shaping and the acc affected the most will be Uncapped. Capped should not be affected!! It just highlights how bad the network is.

If you have to start shaping so called unshaped acc. the writing is on the wall really.

It should still display, but it could be how the network status.

When I checked earlier that issue is still open, I've asked the website team to make sure it's prominent again until we resolve the issue.

from afrihost site:

2014-09-03 05:14 PM There has been a increase in bandwidth demand in the Southern region (Cape Town and surrounding areas), particularly between 19h00 and 23h00. ADSL clients in this region may experience reduced download speeds during this period.

Our team is working to manage the increased demand to deliver the best possible internet experience in the affected region.

We sincerely apologise to all clients who have been affected and assure them that we will continue to work towards improving their experience.

Like how you guys change the date on it, even though it has been ongoing for a while now.

I can't reply to every post right now, so if you have a specific question it might be best to PM me.

Capped accounts are not being shaped by policy. If throughput is not what it should be it's possibly that it's due to contention, which were managing with the software updates we've been making. There is no shaping or throttling whatsoever on Capped accounts.

And just how do you "manage contention" on capped and business accounts? By "fine-tuning" Home Uncapped shaping... or is there something that can be done specifically to capped and business accounts?

The posted date is displayed in the post. We had to give the entry a new date in order for the alert to appear on top. Nothing devious about that, honestly :(
