Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Hi gents, anyone having streaming issues on Afrihost Capped? It is almost unbearable.

Western Cape area

Seems like streaming was poor in the South this weekend from many reports here in this thread. We'll definitely take a look at what can be done from our side until the upgrades go live :(

Afrihost, are you shaping netflix? I'm on a 20Mbps VDSL line, speedtest performing DL speeds of 16.5 Mbps http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3859116394 but still streaming Netflix at between 384 and 480???

We don't shape any services on Capped, but even on our shaped products (like Uncapped) we don't shape realtime services like Netflix.

Which DNS service are you using? Have checked with them if you are using the correct server settings for best performance where you are?

Speed wise not too bad but latency is a disaster....

We'll need to see if this is general latency or in game latency? Do you have other tests we can look at to see if speedtest or traceroutes are showing high latency in general?

Agreed. This is becoming the new normal it seems

I'm giving them 1 last month to get these upgrades done (trying to give them the benefit of the doubt here) and their network stable or else I'm gone as well.

I'm fairly sure that we won't have to wait that long for the South to be upgraded. In fact, I'm hopeful that we'll see the extra capacity arrive within this month. It really depends on Telkom from here though.

You are forgiving. I don't think everyone should be in this mess to start with.

Especially as it's history repeating itself.

A few days here and there is acceptable, it is Africa after all. If seacom or something goes down, totally understandable. But considering this has all happened before...

Smacks of bad management.

Capacity is an ongoing thing. As much as we'd like to simply have double the capacity we need at any given moment, the costs of doing business in those circumstances would be too high (for us and our clients, in terms of what we'd have to charge for bandwidth). All ISPs have to manage capacity very carefully to ensure they keep costs as low as possible so that they can pass on those savings to clients.

I'm starting to feel less and less sympathetic towards them as this day goes on. As i.got~issues stated. Everything is buffering at lowest of low and now my vpn connection to work is too slow to do any work.

I think what'll do for November though is make something to keep track of my speed at certain times of the day for the month. Then at the end of the month I'll see how often I actually get the speed I pay for. Perhaps that'd even come in handy if I wanted to demand a refund at the end of November.

While we are waiting for capacity, it's possible that we will get some poor performance. We're doing as much as we can to troubleshoot these issues until we get capacity. I do expect that a lot of these issues will go away as soon as we have more capacity though.

I'm certainly wanting to move. Had downtime at home again last night - switched to WA account and all was good. Tired of having to switch every now and then. For those that have gone thru this - what are my best options? I have a 10Mbps ADSL that AH manages on my behalf, along with a 50GB + 50GB.
- When would be the best time to cancel?
- I'm assuming that when i cancel, and the ADSL line transfers back to Telkom, it will still be usable?
- I've setup forwarding for the one Afrihost email address that we use (should not need it after the next 2 weeks or so). If i cancel, will the forwarding rule stay in place, or will that result in the email address being cancelled as well at the same time?
- Any idea on how long the ADSL transfer to Telkom would take?
- Any other advice?

I'm sorry to hear that you're wanting to move. I do believe we should see the issues behind us very soon.

You can cancel in ClientZone, however because we've already started our billing run, cancellation will only take effect at the end of November. Your line must be separately cancelled and either cancelled outright (for DSL, not voice services) or migrated back to Telkom.

If you cancel the Afrihost product associated with your @afrihost.co.za email address, the email address will be cancelled.

Transfer to Telkom takes a few days, but it will be submitted at the end of the month, unless you use the relocate option which lets you choose the date of transfer back.

Afriman/guy/genie, Latencies seem to be stabalising around the 270ms mark to the European Blizzard server over the weekend. I am in the East region.

Hope this continues to stay this way :)

That's not so great for EU, but I think as long as you stay under 300ms you should still have a decent gaming experience. Promise we won't change anything (unless it's for the better) :)

What does Bryanston fall under? The North?

That's all good and well but I'm sure you can understand my frustration when I need to work but can't?

I fully understand, I'm sure things will return to normal sooner rather than later.
Yes, Bryanston will fall under the North.

The upgrade was completed, but it will take some time for us to create the various benchmarks on the network to manage the additional capacity effectively - basically finding the sweet spot where performance is at it's best.

I've never laughed so hard in my life as I just did now... oh my... aaah my stomach hurts.

@Afriman

Thank you for the PM. I agree that there is nothing wrong with the account. Judging from the last 10 pages on this topic, its quite clear that the culprit is contention/demand problems. Regardless of what you want to call it, it not supposed to be my problem.

Please refer to post #4728. I want my money back.

What say you??

look, we could go back and forth all afternoon, but simply put you guys have dropped the ball. again. excuses are wearing thin.

nobody expects any ISP to have double capacity. who said that? I didnt.

Surely no one does that... yet other ISP's (from my experience anyway) have never been in this odd situation where they lack capacity, to a point where the entire client base is negatively effected for weeks on end.

It's bad planning through-and-through any way you spin it, it really doesnt change the fact of the matter.

It's called margin and you guys walk to close to the line and have fallen over it twice now.

+1

Nobody is saying they need excessive amounts of capacity. There's a huge difference between having "double", and having "enough". As things stand with p2p downloads, I'm getting 5% of my line speed during the day (40mb line) and 15% of my line speed in the early hours of the morning. And I'm in the north which has already been upgraded..

Amazingly, I can get full speed on a speedtest.. Somehow the "contention" only seems to kick in when I use p2p or NNTP. Quite frankly, I don't care whether or not it's contention, or shaping, or managing, or prioritising, or "optimising".. It really makes no difference! It's a capped account, and the performance is nothing short of shocking 24/7.

Wonder who is bull****ting who as I am getting really pissed of now,
No landline and my max line speed is capped at 2Mbps, was always 4
The way I found out is because WA ran a test and came back that my line is max 2Mbps ?????

So I phoned Telkom and after being disconnected 6 times ! They told me that Afrihost manages my internet line.

So AH, I assume you are capping lines. This line is completely useless to me as the only reason I need for is my Apple TV

Honest answer maybe as I am already making preparations to move to WA, but I have till the 24th.

@Afri-People, what is the likely turn around time for a line upgrade from 2mbps to 4mbps for an AH managed line? Just looking for an estimate as I realise there are a few factors involved. Thanks in advance.

Evening

We don't "cap" any line speeds, if your DSLAM dictates a max speed there isn't a whole lot we can do. It may have dropped due to congestion in the area or poor infrastructure.

Drop me a PM with your line number, I'll check the feasibility of a line speed increase.
