Pretty fscked up tonight. Can't even stream a 400 Kbps stream from twit.tv on a 6 Mbps line.

Yeah, Netflix really struggling too ...stop start streaming of what appears to be something like 240p This is new ...has previously only been p2p that's been screwed.

Getting about 50% to 60% of my 40Mbps line speed.
Really looking forward to get my full line speed after upgrading from 20Mbps almost two months ago.

First one was 11 ms with 1ms jitter.... Second test not so good.

My modem is trained at 7520 Kbps; Before #IncreasedDemandGate I used to measure around 6 Mbit/s. (Somerset-West, South Region iow)

Your IPC has been upgraded already, it is only the South still waiting... again.
The North is probably under curatorship post-upgrade while its' network is being managed and optimised until the "sweet" spot has been found... unless there is a lot more wrong with Afrihost's MTN network than just a capacity shortfall... packet loss is still crazy on nearly every hop on everything down here.

Because we're still needing additional capacity to better manage the traffic, it's difficult to say which services will be affected at any given time, though we're trying our best to stabilise performance as much as possible.

Given the situation, it's going to be hard to guarantee throughput in the South at the moment, though latency should remain mostly stable. However at high periods of demand, latency within our network could be higher than normal.

I'm really sorry you're seeing such poor performance. I'm positive that our upgrade is just around the corner, judging by the rapid succession of the North and East upgrades. I'm sure that we'll see improvement across the board when it's lit up.
The North has already been upgraded and generally we're seeing improvement for clients in the region. Judging by the results you sent earlier, I think we need to troubleshoot with you to see why you're not getting the same experience.

I tried to watch some tennis last night, and it was totally unwatchable. The quality was so poor (based on speed) that I could see fsck all.

It appears to have been the most useless upgrade imaginable. No wonder you guys managed to push an IPC upgrade through so quickly. It obviously wasn't a very big one..
I cannot get more than 900kb/s, at any time (yes that includes 3am), on either P2P or NNTP. For a 40mb line, that is shocking! What's amazing is just how consistent the speeds are. 850kb/s give or take 10kb/s either way, between 12am and 5am. I seem to have no problem getting 38mb/s on a speedtest though! That's a very strange way for contention to work if I'm honest..
Why is there only ever contention when I make use of P2P or NNTP, but not when I do a speedtest? Why is this contention so consistent that speeds do not jump around? Obviously this isn't a contention issue, but rather a *cough* shaping or "optimising" issue. When is this going to be sorted?!! I'm sick and tired of it, and I have absolutely no problem when using my WebAfrica account!

My purpose here is to engage and help. If you're really not willing to do that, which your post seems to indicate, then I'm not sure what outcome you are looking for. I'm always willing to help and do my best, which I think is true of all of us here at Afrihost, but it requires your participation, because we can't do it alone.

If you're speaking about the North, I don't know the full details but I do believe the upgrade was significant, in terms of the capacity we already had percentage wise. For P2P has never been a reliable indicator of throughput. While you can potentially saturate your line with a torrent, there is no guarantee that one or two torrents will do so at any given time, depending on the seeder/leecher stats and how much you also saturate your upload. When I've tested with different networks, my experience is always that it's a roll of the dice. Sometimes other networks appear to work better for a particular download, switching accounts gives mixed results. I think the point here is that we don't know all the variables so I it's hard to benchmark performance by P2P.

And no..
1) I'm referring to very highly seeded torrents
2) I'm talking about all torrents, not just one torrent in particular
3) The same torrents perform fine on other ISPs
4) The speeds are incredibly consistent
5) It's the same with NNTP which does not rely on seeders
I very seldom use torrents if I'm honest however, I have been making use of them lately in order to gauge AH's performance because if anything gets "optimisied", it's torrents. Heck, I don't even think about watching my netflix/hulu+ on my 40MB Afrihost capped account!
Please stop trying to push this off like it's unrelated to Afrihost.
