Hmmmm... great to hear!

But, it would appear that my normal capped data is untouched, and my DataSteal is still being used... will keep on eye on this and see if it is just due a delay in usage reporting. The kids will make a big enough dent in it this arvie to be able to see which is being depleted.

Very clever system you have there.

Was your normal monthly data capped before?

Yes it was.

I will see this evening for sure which is being used and can let you know more tomorrow.

I think that perhaps it would have been advisable to allocate the DataSteal windfall to a new account rather, then it could have been easier to switch between accounts... no chance of doing that now I guess.

1. It's how Telkom gives them the data on much you use. It's at weird times.
2. if it bugs you then go to uncapped.

1. It's not my problem to deal with, the ISP should optimise their pricing or "capping" management system to somehow compensate for this issue, if they can offer 1gb for free to absolutely anyone that wants it, surely they can absorb the odd few extra gigs that may sometimes accumulate on an account.

Consider this parallel; it's like if you fill up petrol and you ask for R300, the guy fills R310 because the pump is faulty should you be obliged pay the extra R10? Look it's not a major issue ofcourse, it's just irksome that's all.

2. I'd rather not have DSL than deal with uncapped shaping ever again. (business uncapped isn't feasible for my usage amounts)

I'm sure our team could have something arranged if you'd prefer the accounts split.
PM me and we can iron out the details.

I replied to your post around capping a little earlier in the thread.

I can understand why this is frustrating, sorry about that :(
It happens due to the way accounting packets are relayed. We can't run this every minute, or even 15 minutes - this is done to balance load on our systems as well as keep your connections overheads as small as possible.

We query via batches, so your account may only be queried once an hour. If it picks up you've gone over your cap, it'll cap you but cary that data over to the next month.
Hope this makes sense.

As mentioned above, we can't query your account all the time - it has negative affects on both your experience and our systems. I'm sure we could implement something that caps you on the MB, but it'll entail millions or Rands and isn't a logical business decision. Our system works and falls in line with standards.

I do understand where you're coming from though. To touch on your example about petrol pumps, a value is input and is monitored every few milliseconds. This isn't possible in terms of ADSL accounting.

@Afriguys

Telkom let us know today that the phone cables in the area had been stolen.
Normally one would just request a refund from Telkom wrt the downtime for the last few days
How would I go about this with my ADSL line, since it is hosted by you?

Why is Afrihost putting the blame on having to many numbers on our account? We have 8 and suggest we should not have more than 6 but the website clearly states up to 10?
Whats the point of selling a 4 seater car that carries "10 people" ?????

We are losing packets on some lines and yet when we change accounts and everything runs perfectly!!!

Our Accounts team can have a credit logged for you once the fault has been resolved. I wish we could get involved a bit more but Telkom make it impossible :(
You may want to pause your data in the mean time.

We shouldn't do, the Capped accounts can handle 10 concurrent connections without any issues. Is there a ticket ID I can look into around this?

Sadly it's a bit late for half of it - they're busy fixing the cables now, but I lost 40-something gigs of data last month.

High latency, but only when going out of the MTN network. Speedtest to MTN Cape Town is perfect i.e. 30ms, speedtest to SAIX Cape Town is 171ms.

And Speedtest thinks I am in Maseru

I wouldn't worry about the location too much, Speedtest updates their IPs every so often to reflect the correct geolocation :)
Would you mind pasting some comparison results though?

Still happening. The below are from PE to Cape Town Speedtest servers

To SAIX:

That's pretty odd.
Is the latency replicated in a traceroute too?

Yes it is. But appears to be isolated to SAIX, as Mweb is also ok, around 25ms.

Everything looks to be fine until the traffic hits SAIXs routers, almost looks international. Have you seen these issues before or are they relatively new?

Definitely new, well for about 3/4 days now. Was fine last week.

@AfriGuy and the AfriTeam... just a BIG thank you for your time and effort this afternoon.

I had a question and you guys not only replied, but also proposed a solution that you did not have to do... and accomplished all this with amazing speed and proficiency.

THIS is the real VAS that I really appreciate, and perhaps, should acknowledge more often.

Thank you again... your assistance is really and truly much appreciated.
