Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

After 3 weeks of getting 2 Mbps on a 10 Mbps line, it might be time to admit defeat and downgrade my capped Afrihost account, and save a little money.
I have logged two support calls, 41 hours for the first response - then nothing. Second one (after pm'ing Afriman), I got a speedy response but it took 4 days to convince Afrihost to log a call with Telkom. Telkom guy managed to get me up to 8Mbps (for one day) but now back to 2Mbps. Last heard from Support 10 days ago when they logged the Telkom fault.
Oh well, I will always have those fond memories of the months before 17 February 2014 when I got the speedy 10 Mbps I paid for.
 
I am having poor performance with my 2Mbps Afrihost albeit Uncapped MTN Business - and as such, I also have a capped account with Axxess which is also MTN Business and also having poor performance, so is there not possibly a problem with that?

Were you given a reason for the dropped speeds - distance from the exchange or infrastructure problems? Can I ask that you send another PM with your line number. So sorry. Would be worth finding out what the problem is. If you could get 8mbps for a day, there could be hope.

Same network but we'll need to see what the issue could be. Did you manage to run any tests?

When I upgraded my line from 2 mbps to 10 mbps, I had no problems (except an occasional short glitch) for the first nine months. It cannot be distance from exchange (unless the exchange has moved) but could be infrastructure problems (Telkom might have f***ed up something while trying to fix something else). It could also be something at MTN causing the problem. Unfortunately neither Telkom or Afrihost gives any feedback, so I cannot fix the problem.
 
I'm currently trying to watch the D2L on twitch (http://www.twitch.tv/d2l). My Afrihost capped account on a 3MB line is constantly lagging on "low" quality while my afrihost mobile plays fine on medium. Whats going on?

3mb line speed sounds weird, what are your SNR and attenuation stats?

I would make a safe bet that your problems are with Telkom, as AH capped is pretty solid.
 
So far capped 2mb 30GB has been great. For some reason they gave me an extra 30GB for the month for free, which is pretty awesome :)

I got a 4GB + 1GB WIFI account for R39 which is an awesome deal.

Now I have another 4GB aswell, although I never use the whole cap and probably won't now either as I have other options, so I don't see these free give aways having a major impact on their network, although, those 100GB guys I'm sure will find something to download :)

Tested on web africa and I'm able to stream at "High" so the line is not the problem. I specifically asked for my line to sync at 3MB because 4MB is too unstable (SNR drops to 6, its 12 at 3Mb)

I see you are in the north, therefore, you should be having no "shaping issues" with AH, even if you were on uncapped, because they have been upgraded.

I still maintain you have telkom issues.

I suspect WA is fine because you are making a new connection (IP/Port) which "hides" connection issues temporarily.

Try staying logged in with WA for about an hour and then go back to AH capped, making sure you have a different IP address allocated after you have connected and then re evaluate.
 
Hi AfriGirl / Afriman

Have been experiencing slower speeds on my 10meg line over a few days now.

Line speed maxes out at 5.3Mbps to CT and JHB from PE. Almost like a hard-cap / throttle.

It has always hit 8.3Mbps for NNTP, HTTP and other downloads on your network (MTN backbone) before this issue.

Line stats show perfect health, 10 meg sync and pings are good. (My line is with you).

I must say... Im not overly impressed with the results Im getting on an Afrihost Capped account. It's supposed to be UNshaped yet Im seeing better speeds when download the SAME THING using two different protocols on my IS uncapped account which is currently rated at a mere 3 stars

pity really, I was planning on kicking uncapped to the curb and going the unshaped route. But if this is what Afrihost call "unshaped" then Im gonna pass

and no, I dont have line issues regarding snr and att, there is zero other activity on the line, zero exchange congestion, etc etc

I have checked spam folder etc. and I have definitely not received an email to this effect.

Their accounts are showing double data in their website until Sept 2014.


Afriguy, any reason the double data is not showing in your bundled combos?
