Mr AfriMan, I'm a little worried and confused here.

I've been going by picture one which says I have 1.65 Gigs left, but recently found picture two which says according to AH mathematics, I should be capped already, unless AH does not count uploads.
So for future, who is who in the zoo :)

This is a bit odd, could you PM me with your account info so I can take a closer look at this for you?

Hi Afriguy,

This month Afrihost support told me that sessions near their data limit were not cut off and that the "overused" data was taken from the next month's bundle - this was to avoid cutting people off in the middle of whatever they were downloading.
Knowing that I only had 30MB left on my account I tried to do a top up, but discovered that the top up would only be valid for a single day until the end of feb and then fall away (topups apparently only valid until the end of the calendar month).
I decided against using the topup option because it didnt make sense for a single day and so carried on with my current session because any overused data would be "clawed back" from March as I had been informed.

In the middle of an online game I was cut off, and then had to revert back to my telkom account to get reconnected.

I have two questions:

1. Why was I cut off when I was explicitly told that this was not the way that these accounts worked and that overused data was clawed back?
2. How can you claw back overused data but not carry over unused data from month to month? This seems to me a bit like having your cake and eating it, especially if the data is a prepaid topup!!

thanks

I see big jumps in latency and timeouts, that could indicate packet loss on your line. See where I have marked in red.

There could be congestion or a line fault happening here :(

Hi, can you take a look again at my stats, Thanks!

I await the response to this. I hope its not the case as I'm considering AH and I'd personally prefer to be cut off.

You get cut off after a bit. Not immediately. I've had varying "overuse" figures of up to about 3GB on my 10Mb line, but in my experience it's for about an hour after you've hit your cap.

Just what is going on with your systems tonight? Unable to log into client zone (no error, just returns to login screen all the time).

Then I registered on support.afrihost.com. As soon as I try and login, it says "We encountered a problem (cross-site request forgery detected); please try again".

Really WTH?

What newshost address is everyone using? news.afrihost.co.za ain't working for me. :(

I also had that last night. Was rather annoying.
Was less annoying than trying to download Eve Online (6GB) at 100KB/s on a 10Mb line though.

Hello

Have your speeds improved this morning? Did you manage to run any tests using our Network Test App?

Looks to be the exchange here. Has there been any change over the weekend?

I await the response to this. I hope its not the case as I'm considering AH and I'd personally prefer to be cut off.

The system updates every few minutes, if the data runs out between then, you won't get immediately cut off until the update runs again.

True. Just depends on when the system updates the data usage.

Thanks, the weekend was terrible. Everyone was home because of the rain, so it was painful.

I have contacted Telkom, gave me a reference number, but I doubt anything will be done about it.

Thanks, anyway!

No one has answered the second part of my query though:

2. How can you claw back overused data but not carry over unused data from month to month? This seems to me a bit like having your cake and eating it, especially if the data is a prepaid topup!!

At the end of the day, we won't be able to offer the pricing we do if we don't reclaim data over cap. It may seem like a small amount of data here and there for the individual, but on a larger scale it represents thousands of rands that we are liable for to our upstream provider. We basically subsidise most of our data as it is, so we are able to offer the packages you pay us for, but if we forgave overage, then we'd have to raise our prices considerably.

Also, bear in mind that data packets are not always delivered in real-time, due to Telkom's infrastructure we sometimes receive accounting data late, which creates data overage situations cos we haven't capped some clients who should be capped. If we wrote off that data it would be a huge cost to company - resulting in higher prices and top-up prices.

LOL, then on the other hand if we don't reach our cap, that remaining amount too, should be carried over and added to the next month.
You guys want your cake and eat it :)
I reckon over all your clients on capped options, you score terrabytes of data every month :)

There is an idea, in your new pricing structure, why not allow carry over, that would be a first and no doubt, very popular ;)
