well, let me be fair and report the good after reporting the bad a couple of times in this thread, latest speed test:
http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3456141291

Although I'm still waiting on this mythical QA manager's call promised on 2014-04-04 and referred to managers yet again on 2014-04-11

Maybe my support ticket will set a new record for worst SLA ever? Although if Afrihost can keep my speeds as above I'll surely be singing praises in the future again, once the month and a half of hell ebbs away from the memory banks ...

International is poop again.

Randburg

Cape Town

London

New York

International is always going to be a lot less than your local, depends on demand and also on which overseas link you get routed through. I think it's not terrible - but could definitely be better :(

Not sure what happened there, your case was definitely passed on. Sorry that the manager did not get back to you. I'll pull up your details and follow this up for you :(

Couldn't stream last night without it buffering every minute. Wasn't even HD quality.

Sorry to hear that. Do you have any tests to show what your international/local throughput is like?

Nope, I was in bed and it was past 11pm so I was lazy. Will do the tests tonight if it repeats. Other than that, performance has been okay.

Considering that its always been on average in the 7Mb/s mark for the past year and I can accept a 10%-20% drop for international while paying a "premium" for a CAPPED and UNSHAPED product. 50%+ is unacceptable.

While the numbers look ... "not terrible", the graphs also tells a different story. The problem is that the graphs are:

./ \_/\/ \/\__/\/\.

So when it comes to realtime services, its very bursty and unreliable.

I've been with Afrihost since 2013-01-31 (MTN Network switch) and have enjoyed the quality that came with the new network. I've been through the same thing with WA (also when they moved to a new network) and it seems like this is a typical response from a typical ISP that have bit off more than it can chew (oversubscribed).

My 4MB capped account unusable for streaming last night. Various comparison (Afrihost vs Web Africa) tests run, proving that the issue is with Afrihost. Not filters, not the Telkom line, not exchange congestion. Line reverted to normal speed at 11.00pm. Tests sent to AH support, awaiting feedback. My initial complaint that the line is seemingly being shaped was denied by Afrihost support. I agree with sentiment that Afrihost have oversubscribed and are now forced to downgrade quality, even on capped "unshaped" accounts. Hopefully I will be proven wrong. Time will tell.

We don't ever shape our Capped accounts :)
The tests you ran last night, did you see poor results across the board or only when using our account?

@Afriman, is there any alternative to oiur asymmetrical ADSL? Dropbox (for example) puts a damper on the entire system. Someone just has to dump a 300Mb file into DB and the upload gets congested which affects overall performance (download included). I guess this is an ADSL curse?

I'm afraid not :(
I've also seen this, uploading to Dropbox seems to put a lot of load on the line. My home connection shows 3000ms odd when uploading files o.0

Best is to probably run it overnight.

Quick question, If I look at change my package I only see 150g @599 is that the 150 + 150 and do you still get some additional discount if you bundle it with the line ?

The bundled packages are always at a bit of a discounted rate :) Pro-rata billing does still apply for upgrades though.

Ok cool, but... is that 150 @ R599 the same as the one on the "front page" which says 150 + 150 ?

Data wise will be what's on the website :)
Just also remember that along with pro-rata billing there's also pro-rata data allocation.

Thanks. I've made the changes... I'll see how the billing now works when I'm invoiced for May :)
