P2P speeds are crawling. Glasnost says no throttling/shaping on your side, so wtf?

These guys must all have Telkom exchange congestion.
My p2p runs at max speed 24/7, never had a problem since I joined AH on 1st Jan :)

having some issues this morning with the internet being quite slow with us here on our capped account , anything we should be aware of ?

Depends on what you're experiencing. Have you run any tests, like our Network Test App? Maybe even just a quick speedtest for now to give me an idea :(

So last night after continuous high latency and disconnects on diablo 3, which I've been experiencing since last week, I switched to an account with a different ISP, what a pleasure. AH I think your time is up.

Sorry to hear that :(
Did you manage to grab any traceroutes when you saw the issues last night?

I've been looking for a way back to Afrihost for a while now.

Cybersmart having one or two issues with what was previously the best accounts I've ever used so that was my q to try Afrihost again.

Always found the capped accounts rock solid so I've gone with that and @ R2 per gb it's difficult to find better value anywhere else.

I'm in for around 700gb's spread over 3 different accounts used on 3 sites and so far I'm reasonably impressed, (without being blown away mind you).

A few questions though:
1.) No shaping or throttling on these accounts what so ever?
2.) If I were to have 2 concurrent connections on 1 account on 2 x 10mb lines would one get max line speed on both connections or is the speed halved between the 2 lines?
3.) The double the data promo makes capped accounts viable vs uncapped accounts but is this offer likely to continue beyond September?
4.) Are you at liberty to disclose your contention ratios? I suspect 5:1?

TIA

Greetings, thanks for considering us :)
To answer your questions:

1) Yup, no shaping, no throttling. Straight up unshaped accounts. Guaranteed
2) You would be able to, our Capped accounts allow for up to 10 concurrent connections, of up to 40Mbps each. So you can have you and 10 mates on 40Mbps, maxing out the line. No worries
3) We aren't even sure on this yet :( Once we have better idea of how we'll move forward from the double data we'll announce something
4) I don't have the numbers off hand, but take a look around the forums of try the account out - you won't be disappointed :) Contention ratios is such a small metric and can be quite easily skewed. If you can download the internet you're sorted ;)

I'm not seeing any unusual latency across the network on my reports. Have you checked whether you get similar issues with a different network or after a port reset on your line?

Maybe drop me a PM so we can run some tests.

I'm popping in to say that speeds have been phenomenal over the past week, thanks Afrihost. I feel like I'm at home for the first time in ages.

I wish I could read this, and not feel a little frustrated by it. Either I have a really bad understanding of how an unshaped connection works, or there are "unmentioned" factors to this statement.

Explain the following scenario:
10mbps exchange, syncing at ~6mbps, using an Afrihost capped account.

When I try watch twitch.tv video streams, I can't watch in 380p without the video stopping to buffer every 15 seconds. When I download from my FTP server with 100mbps upload, I struggle to get an average of 150kbps download. Regardless of countless port resets, modem resets, turning the connection off for a day, and so on these issues remain.

So you must be thinking, well is must be a line issue or congestion or some Telkom related problem? Well that's what I've been told by every Afrihost person I've spoken to. So what's the catch?

Using the exact same line, I connect to my backup MWeb capped account. Twitch.tv streams are now perfect (not even a stutter) in 1080p+ (source quality), and my FTP downloads run at a consitent 680kbps, until the file is downloaded - I've tested a 15Gb file.

Well maybe its just a fluke, and the routing I happen to get when redialing the connection is better? I've done this experiment 10 times in a row - Afrihost was terrible 10 times, MWeb was perfect 10 times. I've taken videos to prove to the scenario to Afrihost support people.

So what's the explanation - surely if I am unshaped, I should achieve the best result regardless of whether I am on MWeb or Afrihost? The difference is quality is absolutely undeniable.

I saw someone mention something similar on the Business thread. You also using uTorrent?

Affirmative. Switched to bittorrent and problem solved. Didn't have time to compare all the settings back to back to see what the problem was.

I don't think it's a question of shaping. I think we'd be looking in the wrong place and ultimately get nowhere. Firstly, we need to look at the throughput you are achieving on the account as well as latency issues, and determine if, in general, both accounts are delivering a similar experience. If not, then that's the first place to look into.

IF they are, then the next step is to compare routing and latency (through traces and ping tests) to see if there is a noticeable difference in how traffic is reaching that destination, and the time it takes to do that.

We would definitely need to do thorough testing before putting it down to us shaping a product we don't shape :(
