Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

My speedtest is fine but my downloads are not going at the same speed... Downloads are erratic and range from 150-250KB/s
I've got a capped account so there shouldn't be any throttling or shaping...

When there is contention for bandwidth, it's hard to predict which services may perform better than others. Some clients seem to be getting good realtime speeds while downloads suffer, especially P2P. However it's not really possible to predict, we're definitely not rate limiting any services or protocols on our side.

Any info from those in the East? Anything to comment on with regards to the upgrade in the IPC? Has your service improved and is it running full speeds specifically p2p?

The East IPC has been upgraded, and we're currently re-calibrating the network as we go to get to the best performance levels. We've seen some short periods of contention where we haven't shaped Uncapped accounts (not Capped and Business) as much as we should have, but otherwise I believe performance overall has improved.

I've just received notification of a major Telkom outage in Johannesburg. It looks like the major links for the wider Joburg region are giving problems and many clients will not be able to authenticate. We're still investigating, but Telkom have posted as follows:

WF13302661 2014-10-22 09:37 Germiston Rosebank,Pretoria and NEW DOORNFONTEIN Link - we have links that are down ADSL users, Dialup users, SpaceStream users, Leased Line users, WiMax users, WiFi users, All users will experience no connectivity. All users will experience no connectivity.

My speeds are fine this morning it seems... I'm Guessing because certain people can't connect, so less contention on the line

I agree, getting over 2mb/s on an update for Yosemite, will test my p2p soon. (Using a 20mb line)

WA must be loving this and you must be loathing your job at the moment, Afriguy.

My downloads seemed to be running like normal again this morning, not sure what changed, just thought I should post some good news as well.

That's quite normal, off peak times are always pretty good. Wait till tonight during peak [~7pm-11pm] then judge again.

I think I can speak for AfriGuy when I say we love our jobs. While it may seem that we only deal with complaints from the forums, I often find myself talking to Afrihost clients talking about how much they love us and enjoy our service and I'm always humbled and grateful for that privilege. It's very easy to forget that we have a lot of clients out there who don't post on forums and when I get to meet them, it's really awesome :)

Glad to hear it. As far as I am aware the South IPC hasn't arrived so we'll have to continue to monitor demand.

Bottom line is the AH network is oversubscribed... If people jump ship (which people are), it will mean less contention and with their soon to be rolled out upgrades more capacity which might be a waste cause people are already pissed off... So now they will have free capacity and no way to use all of it... The network team should have been very proactive in analysing and predicting the network load and this mess could have been all avoided... Well AH should at least now being changing their processes to ensure they are one step ahead and can proactively manage the network ... Well I hope they planning to... If not Afriman you welcome to PM and I can lend some advisory advice... This is my day job, helping clients sort out their operational and strategic issues :)

Thanks for the offer, I do appreciate it. I'm not personally involved at that technical level though. We have a very experienced team between ourselves and MTN, and I believe we're getting better and better at planning for the future. I think we'll see continuous improvement in this area, and I've personally seen us get a lot better at forecasting and planning for our future network needs.

That was unable to foresee over subscription so quite lacking when it come to that sort of experience. Might need adamr's help after all.

My international speeds are so dog slow. sigh. takes 5 seconds just for google to respond.

Traffic is better today but not back to pre iOS8 levels - still "management" applied to torrents and nzb's

While planning is always being done, some instances are hard to plan for.
