Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Heck of a way to show it. I'm not trying to run Afrihost here, but surely there should be a meeting whereby someone says "seeing as though we don't have enough capacity to satisfy our current customers, and our client's experience is our top priority, maybe we should stop selling new accounts until such time as the new capacity gets installed?" or "As our customers are our top concern, maybe we should keep them better informed with the situation.."

Look, I'm not asking you to give us a date that you don't have. In fact, I'm not asking you to do anything that you're not in a position to do. My issue isn't with you (although, if i'm honest, the constant pro management propaganda is quite annoying) but with management itself. Your job is to communicate with the public, and you can only communicate what has been given to you. The issue is that so little information seems to have been given to you. I cannot believe that the best estimate that AH management has for the the IPC upgrades is "very soon". They're paying for it! They're pushing for it! Why can't they just keep us updated? In the past week, literally nothing has changed. "Very soon" is still "very soon".

I'm sorry if I seem to be pro-management. I'll be honest, we make mistakes. Sometimes we get things wrong, and I think it's always with the intention to do the right thing - but sometimes things don't go as expected. With regard to these upgrades, those meetings did happen. Well before we started seeing complaints, our team sat down with MTN and said this is what we think and what we need, and those negotiations were already underway. However, demand started to increase at a rapid rate and the need became much more urgent as clients started reporting the poor performance we've seen. Ordering IPC is a complex issue. The financial costs and impact on overall business model internally is complex enough, not to mention how it affects upstream relationships with MTN, etc. These are usually negotiations that take weeks or even months to research, draw up and agree on. We pushed the upgrades through as fast as possible and I think using the timeframe for the East one can see that this was all concluded very, very quickly.

Again, when it comes to IPC, there really are no reliable time frames that we can communicate. I don't have the info, our management don't have it and neither do MTN. As soon as MTN receives any information, they alert us and I get the go ahead to update you guys.

We'll need to see more test results to be able to say what could be the cause. Also if you're in a region that still needs an upgrade, it will be difficult to diagnose before the new IPC in that region goes live :(

I'm in the East region. Did pingtests and tracert's, no exchange congestion and I am <100m away from my Exchange.

Hey Guys

Some great news. We've received our upgrade in the North and we're already seeing better performance overall. Our technical team will be monitoring and calibrating the network over the next while, but we expect most people will be getting much better performance.

Please let us know if anyone from the North is still having a poor experience (especially seeing any latency or very poor throughput), but bear in mind that it will take us a little time to get the network working optimally with the new IPC in place.

Thanks to everyone for their patience while this was being sorted out.

River Club, unfortunately the worst ever, from 0 to 0,2 Mbps on a 4MB line.

How do you know how far an exchange is from your house, as AH put me back from 10 to 4 as they couldn't deliver the promised speed.
But if I test my line on speediest.net where the have a special MTN option these days I have a B+ line, the 2nd best there is according to that test.

Save yourself some sanity and do yourself a favour and either use a Telkom Guest account and do a speedtest.net test from that or signup for a free trial account or small account from another ISP and see what your speeds are like. With the current state of the AH network no test using their accounts is accurate or even representative of your line speed right now. Point in case my AH accounts are going max +-1mbit/s on 10mbit/s lines and when I switch them over to another competitors' account details they go all average around 8mbit/s. This will at least allow you to see if it's your DSL line or the ISP.

Good Evening Afriman!

Just want to take the time to say "thanx" for the speed correction. My line runs again at 8MBps on my 10meg line. I stuck in and waited, and you came through with your word. THANX THANX. Please just keep it like this for heavens sake!!

First time I've seen consistent speeds since being on Afrihost with a 40mb line.

In saying that, it is 11:30pm. I'm going to test the account properly tomorrow, during peak hours, before deciding whether or not to cancel. Tomorrow is d-day for Afrihost and me!

Still the same slow speed in PE.

PE falls under our Southern Region, for the moment the IPC upgrade in the South is still pending, but we are pushing hard to get it completed and online as quickly as possible!

It is great to hear that your speeds have improved! I really appreciate that you stuck things out with us, it has been a tough time, and it helps greatly to have clients like you. :)

Afri-people, is the Refer-a-friend programme not functional at the moment? https://www.afrihost.com/site/faq/refer_a_friend?src=website_nav

In ClientZone it just says, "Coming Soon".

The Refer-A-Friend is definitely still active and running, you have will however need to switch to the Old Clientzone - you should see the link right at the bottom of the New Clientzone.

In the Old Clientzone, on the left-hand side of the screen you will see a button Refer-A-Friend and Save!

That will link you to the page where you are able to generate referral links for Capped, Uncapped and Hosting products.

It is good to see that your connection appears to be running significantly more consistently than it did previously.

I certainly hope we can keep it at that level! :)

Super slow speed this morning in Durban. Haven't had such slow speeds since February this year :(

Afriman, my latency seems to be normalising now thankfully. It ranges from 270ms-400ms on the international blizzard EU servers.

Seems like you are doing something right! Hopefully it will return soon to the glory days of a constant 250-260ms.
