Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

I was talking about the tweaking Afrihost was doing yesterday. Is there a eta as to when we can expect things to be working properly?

Here... this tweaking perhaps...

We are in the process of making some tweaks and changes in the Southern Region, you should start to see your speeds return to normal shortly.

Some of our Uncapped accounts were pulling additional bandwidth, the shaping on these accounts is being revised to free up extra bandwidth for consumption by our Capped and Business Uncapped users.

That's right!

Our Capped and Business Uncapped users should always receive the highest possible priority with bandwidth for all services, and our Uncapped users for real-time services.

This does mean that our Uncapped users will experience shaping on their P2P and HTTP downloads at times, we do need to make changes and updates to our system to ensure this remains consistent.

I don't have an ETA, I think it's an ongoing process to make the network better. I expect we'll see improvements as we go, and we are in constant communication with MTN and our other consultants to ensure that we monitor performance after every change that is made.

Can anyone recommend the 2Mbps uncapped package from Web AfricaI desperately need to change ISP and would like similar to what I have going now but without the ridiculous throttling.

I can't really comment on other ISP packages. Maybe best to check their feedback threads.

There's definitely no throttling on our accounts, but we know that there are definitely too many reports of poor performance at the moment, and we've got all our available resources working on this to get performance to what it should be.

I patiently waited for the upgrades in the south (have been a loyal AH client for many years and remember the good old days before the MTN hook-up) and was excited when confirmation came about a week ago that they were implemented. Gave it time as there was no perceivable difference immediately (as I had hoped for) but, except for a phenomenal experience on Sunday when streaming worked flawlessly until about 10.00pm and then everything died again, things are once again Bad, Bad, Bad! I am running a concurrent WA account (as I want to compare and at the end of the month decide whether to switch) and this runs perfectly - no buffering, quick loading etc. I have submitted PM's (No response to any of them, Tried support - a Joke - paid someone to run tests and worked with Telkom and everything points to lack of capacity at AH).
I notice that the complaints on the uncapped adsl thread on My BB forums has died to a trickle from the deluge there used to be so the assumption is that either most of them have jumped ship or they have simply given up or maybe capacity from the capped accounts is being diverted to them and they are now happy.
A comment from a reader on a story about the Cell C banner incident seems applicable to what we are experiencing:
"The biggest problem with Cell C is that they spend more money on the marketing of their product to lure people into buying cheap cellular products and spend less on their customer care and infrastructure side. The article clearly shows what happens if this criteria wasn't met by the client, which I fully support. I was with Cell C and had endless problems with them. My advice rather seek another company that shows the balance in what you paying for and what service you going to enjoy."
I sincerely hope that AH get their act together before the 25th otherwise I am gone, but they probably won't care!

Then why is the status still shown as Green?

The status page is meant to be there to assist the users if they suspect a line issue and confirm that AH is running well before contacting Telkom. I am beginning to think that AH use it as a Marketing tool, "Look we have no faults" but the reality is an unusable network in the South at peak periods.

If you admit you have performance issues then do so publicly and update the status page to reflect that.

I'm sorry that your experience is still poor. Prior to the weekend, we had definitely seen major improvement from the majority of clients in the South. I know that some clients are showing poor performance since we made changes recently, and we're doing our best to find out what could be behind this, as it's obviously a major concern for us.

I think what I draw from the incident you refer to here is that it's really important to engage with your service provider. I don't think anyone really wins in a situation like this. I think a business relationship that is not built on trust and has been allowed to break down to this extent is very unfortunate.

It's definitely not a marketing tool, but it's also there to confirm issues depending on the number of clients affected and the severity as measured against the full operation of the network. At the moment, the majority of complaints are here on MyBB, and while we are investigating, we don't really have much more to go on. We're testing and working with clients to establish what could be the cause and once we have more info, management will assess the impact to the overall network in terms of a network status.

Granted, but as per:

in all honesty, that status should not be green if you know something's not right. At least say you're investigating, or something.

Multi threaded download via rapidgator premium account using IDM, 10mb capped account...

Kempton Park area btw

I think in the context of mybroadband, we're investigating the reports here. It depends on the impact assessed by management from support tickets, complaints, social media and other feedback like network reports, etc. I don't think we can force the status based solely on MyBB feedback, but I do think we need to keep investigating what is reported here on MyBB.

That's pretty awful. Ping shouldn't be high though, can you post the full trace just to be sure?

My bad was connected to a VPN. But still this is awful:

Attention Mods

Please confirm whether or not I am allowed to post my experience and feedback in this thread? Yes, it's largely negative but that it what Afrihost has become in the South. I come on here each night, and it's the same issues over and over met with the same denial from Afrihost over and over. All you need to do is look around. My posts are intended to equip people deciding whether or not they should use Afrihost or not. People should have that info at their fingertips, and not wait to be screwed over before they are entitled to be "helped"

This is the first thread people will come to, when making a decision. Not some random thread with 5 pages.

Am I not allowed to do that?
This thread should have the same initial post as the other feedback threads thus:

Mod_note: These threads are clearly designed/intended for customers to provide feedback to their respective ISPs - not for disgruntled former customers to vent, not for other ISPs to promote their services, etc - and, one hopes, for the relevant ISP to respond.

You are the mod, so I will respect that even if I think its wrong.

May the Afrihost joke continue then, and I will not post anything in this thread again.

That high ping to the 3rd hop (would usually be the 2nd hop for most) is to Telkom's infrastructure, so it suggests the exchange could be congested or not performing as it should. A 1000ms+ response is very concerning.

I don't think we can force the status based solely on MyBB feedback, but I do think we need to keep investigating what is reported here on MyBB.

Then is is rather convenient for AH that the problems only really start after your so called 24 Hour support has shut down for the night and anyone who is not tech savy enough to find alternate methods to report the issue just get a recording to say call in Office Hours.

By the next morning all is well and they feel embarrassed to report it as the Help desk will test a perfectly good line and say no problems, ticket resolved.

MBB is the only place that us technical users, most of whom have both the resources and knowledge to confirm line faults and ISP issues, have left resort too.

Your Help Desk probably have their performance appraisals on number of tickets closed, rather than number of issues actually resolved and no doubt a red indication on the Status page reflects badly on the network guys at appraisal time.

You may not be using it intentionally as a marketing tool but then again you don't appear to be using it at all.

Sorry but I agree. There is clearly an issue, as many technical folk at MyBB pointed out and that even AH itself has admitted. Saying the network is perfectly fine is just not true, even if it is just a small proportion of users (and you don't know if it's only a small proportion, do you?)
