You know that line discount is still available right?
Apparently, yes. They probably want to retain clients and not have people migrating to ISP's managing accounts or switching to wireless. (The latter would mean them losing out on that ridiculous compulsory line rental).
When asking for the discount you may get somebody who is clueless but press home your request politely and in a firm voice and they then seem to suddenly remember.

I know. Just saying it's always better to leave your line with Telkom.

Look what I've been blessed with yesterday afternoon and today :(
My mate is on the same exchange but different MSAN...He has no problems. Could my MSAN be dodgey?
Line stats haven't budged so don't think it's a line fault..

I'm having the same problem. Dslam hop on the trace route is showing 1000ms no matter what account. The suddenly it's fine and now I'm getting latency spikes but its not afrihost as the spikes are happening on the dslam hop. Phone Telkom and they obviously say its the ISP and not the line or dslam....

It can't be congestion because the dslam I'm connected to is served by metro ethernet and its a IMAX so yeah basically no gaming on adsl for the whole weekend. Had to play on Afrihost Mobile LTE.

Ask them to put you on a different port?

I think I must do that. My SNR is very stable @ 3.7dB with a 14.1Mbps sync rate like always. In fact it looks like it got better but the it feels sluggish.

As I post this its very good but it will start acting up again soon. It started happening since both my lines went dead due to very heavy rain. Since then its been buggy. If it was the line though the SNR should get worse but its not.

Uhm...that SnR is not good. Generally when SnR goes below 6dB you have a very patchy unstable line.

SnR you want as high as possible - since it's signal to noise ratio. You want more signal, not less :D

Attenuation is the one you want as low as possible. Though it's threshold is much higher at 55dB. Anything below 55 is considered okay and below 20 is fantastic.

Afrfiman - can you explain this:

Downloading a large file via NNTP. Started at 5:30pm at full linespeed, achieving 2.1Meg per second.

By 7pm this gradually reduces to half of that, 1Meg per second.

Hop onto my VOX fatpipe account and it is fullspeed again.

Why are you shaping in the evening when demand is higher on your network ?

Same thing happened yesterday afternoon then was fine by the evening. We'll see what happens tomorrow I guess.

Contention. They don't have enough capacity in their download data pool. When demand rises and exceeds their supply the contention increases on download traffic across the board - lowering the download speed.

Will most likely get the excuse they are still tweaking their management software, but your scenario certainly sounds like it precludes that possibility.

Decide to use my free webafrica account, everything running perfect with! 1080p vids streaming with no buffer, nearly brought a tear to my eyes.

A crapload of packet loss on the MTN network.

Guess which one is the Afrihost connection:

Agreed - makes sense. Sad but true.

Yeah I know but anything above 3dB is okay and won't cause instability or drops although it leaves very little room for any type of variation of the SNR.

I actually forced my SNR down a bit more to get a higher sync rate. Telkom considers 6dB to be the lines limits that might be true in certain cases. I force it down a bit to get like 1.4Mbps higher sync rate and it works. You won't say I was syncing stable on 14.15Mbps with a Attenuation of 40dB but here I am pushing my line and router to the absolute max.

Nice!

Learned something new :D

I think telkom sets the limit at 6dB due to aging infrastructure and damaged lines, they don't want to replace since it would be easier just to limit you.
