so then why is the streaming so bad when the speed-test show everything is fine? Is it because certain protocols are shaped or managed more than others? I thought streaming was a real-time service?

Tut tut. There is absolutely NO shaping.

Which of course makes it perfectly clear why there is so much tinkering and tampering with the network.

Also had issues in PE last night.
In fact it does not even seem that there was any IPC that they added recently.
Tried streaming DSTV and it was like I was watching 10x10 pixels moving around - I was surprised I had sound!
This on a 20meg line too!

I think AfriHost is messed up :(

Oh, and, no its NOT my line......

We definitely did get upgrades and performance just didn't go well after we did a round of firmware upgrades on the network management hardware. We're now trying to sort that out and make as much improvement as possible so that clients can enjoy the network's full potential.

Afriman/guy. Everyday your guys seem to be working on something. Do they know what they are doing? Months went by with no improvement, only the same excuses eg. our guys are working on the problem and there seems to be improvement yada yada yada...
It is painfully clear that there is a huge level of incompetence which results in nothing improving. Everytime you "fix" one man's problem , six new ones pop up. I understand that you are only the spindoctor here, but at some stage even you have to go to your bosses and ask : WTF? The fact that this thread is 465 pages long is not something to be proud of.

This is my sentiment too. Somebody must be held accountable for this and if the current technical staff cannot fix the problem then somebody needs to get people in there that know what they're doing.

For obvious reasons I cannot go into too much detail when it comes to the people and companies involved with the software and hardware used in our Network Management tools, but there is definitely accountability and feedback with regards to these ongoing issues.

I know I have said this many times before, but this is our highest priority at the moment, and there are quite a few guys that haven't actually gone home in days, working on this non-stop to get everyone the service they need.

There has been considerable improvement since last week, when the issue came to light, and I am confident we can have you guys at full speed again.

As far as my internet concerns the whole thing is going down not up and I am tierd of it .

This whole thing feels like a bad relationship. Going to counselling and many promises made but no results not for me anyways. It helps some people I guess. I have been hoping things would change for months now and been hanging on for dear life in the hope that things will be the way they used to be. It started of to be an amazing relationship! I was committed and even bragged to my friends on how well things were going.

Then things went south! Bad communication was the start of the problems. I don't expect things to be perfect all the time but I feel its coming to the point where i need to look after myself. Think at the end of this month I'm going to have to have a bit of a separation from AH. Maybe one day we will get back together and have pure joy to its fullest.

It was good while it lasted and will always have a soft spot in my heart for AH but I need to move on. A relationship is a two way thing and I feel I have not gotten what I have put in...

p.s thanks for all the good times

This makes me sad :(

Get Far Cry on release from Kalahari at 8AM and install. Then have to wait 6 hours to download a 2GB path on a 20mb line with AH capped data :(
Speed is fine on WA.

Guess I'll have to wait.

Edit:

Looks like something changed in the last 10 minutes. Suddenly getting approximately 1.3MB/s now on the patch :) ETA: 30min till some Far Cry.

We don't bypass speedtest or whitelist it, though in the past we've heard some stories of other ISPs using proxy servers to ensure good speeds.

We only treat speedtest as a realtime service, otherwise we don't treat it any differently.

Whatever. The end result is that on a 10mbs line, speedtest gives me 8.5mbs to London, but when I browse or download from overseas websites it's more often than not like being on dial up, so what's the use of all these users posting speedtest results as it provides absolutely no indication of real world usage experience?

Because it is good PR, it makes the problem look less significant by diverting the focus from actual hard data to pretty graphs.
Although we are assured that technicians are working hard to solve the problem I suspect the PR guys are working even harder trying to cover it up.

Why has Gian been so silent? has he taken his payout from MTN and done a runner? He used to be front and center in times of crisis, now we just get conflicting statements from Afribots and unsubstantiated statements about shaping and user profiles that do not live up to user experience.

We can only get so far with the testing that we do from our side, we need real-world results to figure out if we are actually making progress to resolving the issue.

Gian is in the office each day with our Team working to get our Network Management Software running nominally, I am sure that we will update everyone once we have finally moved to resolve the problem affecting our users.

I don't we are covering up the issue at all, we have been quite open about it, at the moment we are acting as a middleman between our users and the Team working on getting things fixed.

Noticed last night a quite drastic degradation of service. Youtube videos again had issues buffering. A 40 minute video streamed ends up taking about an hour and a half to watch.

I just don't have the time to do fancy tests my side to back this up.

Can we please stop referring the Afrihost representatives as Afribots, there guys are just in the dark about the network situation.

Ok MelvinBOT, are you just upset that we are using your name in vain :)

I admit it sounds a bit impersonal but it is a good collective name, what would you suggest AfriMen?

AfriMeeples? AfriNation?

It's up to you guys really. :)

AfriMeeples - I wonder if AfriGinie is a BoardgameGeek too ..........

Come to think of it, how about AfriGeeks ?

My latency is finally decreasing during the day, speed is OK. I went to my exchange and a Telkom representative said he checked my connection on the DSLAM apparently the latency on my connection spikes between the MTN authentication protocol. Is the DSL and mobile connections(voice) on the MTN network running trough the same pipe?
