Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Morning!

There didn't appear to be any DNS issues last night on our side or on the MTN Network itself. What I would perhaps recommend using 196.7.7.7 as the primary DNS with 8.8.8.8 set as your secondary DNS, this should help improve DNS reliability.

Try changing it to google's DNS?

Primary: 8.8.8.8
Secondary: 8.8.4.4

Thanks will try the hybrid combination, though looking at the other posts I'm not alone with these issues.

When running the Afrihost network tester I got time outs to Google's DNS server though and the ping is around 150ms. Service looks to have been more reliable today and yesterday.

Hello Afrigenie :)

Is this a requirement for Afrihost too now? I saw all the Web Africa users had to change, but do I who uses afrihost's defaults also need to change now?

Not at all! You are welcome to keep using our default DNS settings, this is usually just another troubleshooting step that I ask clients to use.

If any DNS issues occur, we usually switch our DNS mirror to the Google DNS, but I think we have only done this once maybe twice in the last two years.

As far as I understand, most routing to Australia from South Africa will go through the UK, from there it will either go through the US or through to Asia.

The local routing through to a Cape Town-based Data center should definitely not dropping out on you, does this permanently happen or only at particular times?

Only thing that works from here is avoiding your primary and secondary DNS for routing.

When using Google public DNS domains resolve locally and to AUS.

Primary: 8.8.8.8
Secondary: 8.8.4.4

So you know what that means...

Very curious, as I said, you are welcome to post the traceroutes using the different DNS settings, it will help me track down any issues with our routing on the MTN network.

Awesome thanks :)

200ms improvement per ping using Googl*s primary and secondary DNS - my problem "resolved" in part by avoiding both default Afrihost DNS settings.

Using Afrihost DNS from CPT to this forum - does this from time to time also.

I'd venture to say this that routing from Afrihost DNS to london03.uk.bb.gin.ntt.net 129.250.5.4 server onward, your network is being throttled...beyond that server - using Googl*s DNS settings the speeds per ping improve with 200ms per hop.

Why your DNS IP of origin is possibly being throttled is unknown. But it affects international DNS resolution on Afrihost.

Why the local domains dont resolve using Afrihost DNS - who knows? But it includes this domain of this forum on and off.

I am having trouble replicating similar results on my side, so if you get a chance to post some traceroutes it will help me a lot.

Sorry I dropped a zero at the end - this is the server slowing your traffic down to AUS. Half the speed than when using Google DNS instead of Afrihost DNS as origin.

Hello Afripeople, any chance of exerting some of your muscle on Telkom for me, line completely dead:

Afrihost fault no: EKA-585-90922
Telkom fault no: 34BRK050115

If added sympathy would help I'm currently a housebound cripple on crutches recovering from ankle surgery;)

AFAIK only the "owner" of the fault request can escalate it.

Looks like we only logged the fault today, I can only escalate this for you tomorrow morning :(

Awesome a week back at Afrihost, after their issues the past few months and still Twitch is up to ****! I already cancelled my mobile package and I'll be going back to WebAfrica for a descent internet experience. Sorry Afrihost, after 5 years, it's time to move on.

I'm sorry to hear that you decided to move away. We did see some improvement in Twitch, but it's been pretty erratic for a long time, on a few tests I've run with different ISPs. We'll keep working on what we can do from our end though :(

Just connected my afrihost account for first time in a month. Speed Max at 2.5Mbps. Other accounts reaching 3.5Mbps.

Ye I don't know hey, I have been using webafrica for the last 2 odd months now and switch has been great. I have been able to watch streams with bitrate of around 1500kbs successfully on my 10mb line.

Is it possible that there is some sort of a routing issue on ur network, maybe its just not optimized enough or is there that many people on it?

We've definitely got enough capacity in the South and from what I can see we are far from peak demand right now. Can you post any test results like a traceroute and speedtests?
