Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Err... so my line has been on 8Mb (manual sync) on ADSL2+ since Telkom stuck their fingers into a power box somewhere, and it's been like that for a good three or four months now. Line stats were decent at 13.0dB.

Suddenly this weekend, my line starts syncing at 8992/{900~990 up} on G.DMT ... and I definitely didn't change anything. I cannot comment on stability, since there was a nasty bout of congestion this weekend, but my SNR is about 6.5-7 now.

Any ideas?

Sounds like somewhere something or someone is fiddling.

It could be Telkom's new dynamic system making changes, but it shouldn't touch your modulation.

Could you PM me so I can take a look?

Help, our internet is bad this morning! This feels like extreme congestion?

I'm not sure how to read this trace becuase it looks like you;re hitting a firewall or exchange server first before the router. That could be contributing to intermittent latency. I also see that your second hop times out (which we're seeing more of since Telkom upgraded their systems, but immediate high latency afterwards. Since I am not seeing general latency problems, my guess would be possible congestion or a fault on the line :(

I tried to torrent using the free 10Gb account that I got in the bundle from Telkom. Stated fine for a minute at ~210KB/sec but went to 0.1KB/sec afterwards. This was on a Sunday, yesterday.

I switched to my Afrihost capped account and it ran at full line speed. So you chaps at Afrihost are certainly doing things right... That torrent was for my work and if I could not get it it would have been a problem, ie. nothing for me to watch at lunch-time!

We all need those "linux distros" from time to time. Glad we could help ;)

I have been holding back but am ready to comment now. I have a 10Mbps ADSL line and a 50+50GB capped account which I mainly use for streaming. For at least the past year it has been virtually impossible to get consistent service and usually just gave up. I have been with AH for many years but must say since the link up with MTN things just went downhill fast. I stuck it out (as frankly I am probably just too lazy to go through all the hassles of switching my accounts to another ISP) And suddenly a month ago things started working as they should. No buffering, even on HD. I am in seventh heaven. I have done a lot of bitching on this forum but feel that credit should be given where it is due - Thank you AH.

Well that rough patch certainly hurt them.
In this years MyBroadband ISP Survey they have dropped from First place, that they held for several years, to only 5th in both ISP ranking and ISP's that are recommended by others.

It will take a while to rebuild its image and I personally don't think stunts like Plus+ will help. Lets put reliability first this year and hope the lethal congestion in the Cape is a thing of the past.

I think our network is currently as stable as it's ever been, my tests are currently fantastic. But it's true that a poor image can have a lasting effect and we'd love to turn that around. A big part of why we love to win awards is to reassure our clients in a big way that they are with the best ISP, so we'd definitely like to change whatever perception is out there that made people feel differently in this last round of polling :(

It is sad to see AH going down. I have always had good support from them. Hope you guys get on top again soon.

It was definitely disappointing to see the drop in ratings, but the areas that need improvement - according to the ratings - we have already been working on improving and getting back to where they were in the past. Getting our network running smoothly is definitely our top priority and I am sure you guys will notice the improvement over the coming days and weeks.

Agreed, you have improved drastically since three months ago.

Now if you could sort out the power issues

Hi AfriPeople.

Still syncing at 4, Blanche from Telkom online chat assured me it would be done today... Tried a port reset through you to see if it might shake the branches but it failed.

The fault looks like it's resolved - is this in line with the fault that I've been escalating for you?

No, I'm trying to upgrade to 10meg to test stability. Has gone through on your system but Telkom still has me on the 4meg profile for some reason and I can't get an answer from anyone why that is.

The upgrade will usually take about 48 hours from our end, may be a bit longer if Telkom think the line won't be stable at that sync profile though.

Netflix is useless tonight. Getting pretty much full line speed (3.5mbit from 4mbit line), but buffers every 3 or 4 minutes :/

Something's not right at all tonight, I just got a media error on a capture screen, many pages are loading blank, streams are not running from prime servers such as BBC and SKY TV and secondary servers are showing the opening frame of the video but reporting "File not found" when you hit play.

Speed test is fine so it is definitely something happening at a packet level.

EDIT: My bad, I had Hola active earlier and had not disabled it.
Things are slightly better without it but still buffering badly. Streams that normally run at >500KBs as running at only 60-100KBs tonight.

Thanks for the response. Hop 3 is strange indeed, hop 2 is our DSL modem so what firewall can this hop 3 be? Something in Telkom's exchange or what? Anyone have an idea?

The trace again...
