Would the Telkom migration cause really high latencies for the time period?

In theory it shouldn't, but Telkom has indicated that there will be a drop in speeds and an increase in latency during the actual switchover from the older infrastructure to the BNGs.

I'm guessing you're seeing some latency on your connection at the moment?

Yeah it's around 400ms to local servers but my download speed is the same. Wonder if it might be exchange congestion...

If you run a traceroute to Afrihost.com for example, and you see high latency on your second hop, that would point towards line congestion. You are welcome to post your traceroute here so that we can have a look.

Damn, so I guess there is congestion :/ . Should I just report it to telkom and pray they do something?

Yup... That's the Exchange. Are you consistently getting latencies that high?

I'm getting that mostly in the evenings and it sometimes starts from around 4pm where the latency steadily increases from 200 up to that which you see. I had a problem with telkom last year where we had congestion constantly for up to 3 months, where I had called them and had around 10 different reference numbers to address the problem. Everytime they they told me that they see no congestion from their side...yada yada etc.
I'm currently in the process of migrating my line from Telkom to AH, which procedure would I then have to follow to be relieved from this terrible congestion?

Move house

Streaming is impossible again tonight.

The stream is peeking at 2Mbps but only averaging 100KBps where it normally is flat response at 500+KBps.
cant be botherd to start doing tracert's and speed tests now, I was trying to get a break from Computer issues and relax with a movie.
Time to switch ISP accounts and see if they are any better.

EDIT:

Telkom Shaped account is streaming better than AH Unshaped, guess I can go watch my Movie now but it is silly that I have to use the supposedly inferior account once again.

I wish I could say we could sort that out for you, but you need to be prepared that Telkom manage exchanges, we only have control over the physical lines. If the exchange is congested, Telkom have to address this from their side to ensure that they upgrade backhaul from the exchange. The standard response we get is 6 weeks to 12 months. We do our best to see what options are available, but I can't make any kind of guarantee :(

Was the performance totally different or just better enough that you could stream? From what I can see all networks (regions) were performing well, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't be getting goods speeds in those circumstances.

Around what time did you test with your AH account?

I continue to have the same issues as caroper. Very unstable streaming (non-functional) on AH in Sea Point, Cape Town. I've switched over to my backup WebAfrica account and watched for an hour with no freezing. The only day that streaming was consistently fine on AH was last Friday. This was also a day that Cape Town had no load shedding - maybe this isn't a coincidence? These problems started at broadly the same time as regular/daily load shedding started, 3 weeks ago.

Afriman - are you still not finding the source of the issue? If that is the case, it seems that I need to switch my backup ISP into my primary one and vice versa at least until this is permanently fixed.

The first step is to replicate the issue, which we are so far not able to do. We're testing in Cape Town with a user and not getting the streaming problems that you are seeing. It's possible that load shedding is a factor, it seems to be causing all sorts of chaos in all sorts of ways.

Were you streaming from YouTube or from any particular service?

Having a problem connecting to Smite servers and matchmaking in LoL? As in when all accept the game it just says game unavailable for the last couple of hours (according to others in the house it's been since 8am, it has been at least an hour my side)?

One server I could understand, but two at the same time?
I have tried rebooting the modem, I can stream youtube and access all browser sites without an issue as well. Will try a torrent in a moment to see if that has any issue. Sadly cannot change DNS settings of router due to it being a PACE modem, doesn't let me due to greyed out.

That sounds very strange to say the least. I may ask you to try see if you can update your DNS settings on your network adapter, that should overrule the modem's settings to see if that makes any difference.

We aren't seeing any reduced international throughput or spikes in latency on the network in general, so we'll definitely need to work with you to figure out what the issue is.

Called Telkom and asked for a port reset, seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks for replying.

EDIT: on a side note, only had to wait 8 minutes for them to pick up :D

Wow! That's positively relativistic speeds for Telkom!

It is interesting that a port recreate fixed the issue, I wonder if there wasn't perhaps some latency that was causing the issue. Please keep an eye on your connection, and let me know of any changes.

Got a nice guy by the name of Nicolas do a port reset for me from you guys. Please thank him for it.
Seems my line is giving a lot of errors, so going to have to get a Telkom Techie to come over again soon. My SNR has dropped from 9.9 to 7.1 in the last month. My attentuation is also increasing slightly according to the router. Ah well.

EDIT: As in having problems with dropped connection but http traffic/streaming doesn't seem to be affected. Torrents are pretty bad, 0.2kB/s while the HTTP I got from windows is going at 400kB/s. on the other hand, upload seems to be marvelous currently.

Glad Nicholas was able to help :)

Remember SNR refers to Signal to Noise. When copper cable degrades and noise level starts to increase, this will increase the risk of disconnects. SNR is a ratio, so that value is hardly ever static, it will fluctuate slightly (or greatly) depending on the quality of the line, the distance from the exchange and other environmental factors (usually to a lesser extent). This would affect all traffic, so affecting protocols individually is a little strange. I can only think that where latency is affected streaming could be more affected than other services, but that's the opposite of what you've reported, so it's a little weird to me.

Maybe we need to look at this a little closer :(
