Afrihost explains ADSL problems

Gian, thanks for the three months free offer but we can't afford any more service interruption. Got a business to run ...

Hi brucem

I have asked Afriman to PM you.

We have made changes today that we believe will help - We have clearly lost your trust and we'd love to be given a chance to restore your faith in us.

If you do choose to move I wish you all of the best

Thanks

Gian

Gian, could I have my money back for the time period that I've been adversely affected, and for the rest of November, so that I can cancel my Afrihost account tomorrow and move to Openweb?

I still maintain as I intimated a while back in another thread they have their logic backwards in their buckets config in QOS. That is why Torrents are flying and Other stuff is lagging.

It is not because torrents have many connections. In most modern QOS systems a single type of traffic is all lumped together in the same rule.

OK there's some weird stuff going on here, I'm on a 6Mb line and these results come from my axxess 2Mb uncapped account.

here's some MyBB speed tests:

Speedtest.net:

View attachment 27474
(Ping: 130ms Down: 1.96Mbps Up: 0.47Mbps)

and ... torrent speed:

View attachment 27476
(Down: 376kB/s Up: 40kB/s)

Weird huh

Hi biometrics

I completely understand.

I honestly believe we have sorted out the problems and that your service from now will be excellent.

I'd sincerely appreciate it if you gave us a chance to prove this.

However, if you choose to move I do understand.

I wish you all the absolute best no matter what you decide.

Thanks.

Gian

Look at you lot complaining! The grass is certainly not greener on the other side.

On MWEB 2MB Uncapped and since 12-09-2012 my line has been too slow to even do a speed test... Had to refresh this page 3 times before I could submit my comment.. :(

+1
Before you jump, have a look at MWEBs' facebook page. It is also not only sunshine and roses.

Even though these problems are horrible, at least the CEO is trying his best to sort them out, and is engaging with those affected rather than hiding behind the support staff.

I never want to leave university!

We did have some problems over the last few days. Rebooted the router, and seems to be better.

Any way to prioritise traffic on port 465? Weirdly though we don't usually have a problem emailing from normal email clients on this port, but we often get error 10060 in Pastel Evolution when trying to email documents (ongoing problem for the last few months).

Tonight was much better, still not perfect but I do appreciate all that Afrihost are doing to make it better. Only nntp performance tonight was a lot slower than before on the IS network. What worries me is the talk of doing away with throttling in favor of shaping based on protocol. I had MWEB 4Mb uncapped from when it first launched for about a year. I cancelled because of the constant shaping of news servers. I want to get about 100-150GB a month from my account and would like to download from news servers at decent speed during the evening so that I can still use that file later the same evening. I feel that shaping based on protocol punishes everyone to the same extent regardless of use. This leads to a situation where people start to run torrents and news server downloads 24/7. On MWEB they had guys doing 500GB a month without bypassing the shaping by just constantly downloading. I really liked the way you managed the accounts on IS where one got great speeds up to a fair usage limit regardless of protocol and then got throttled. This rewards light to moderate use and I for one never even used my connection during business hours because I knew I could download the latest stuff after work and still have it the same evening.

Mweb has the same shiz going on. I am with mweb and wanted to switch to afrihost. I am still switching as you cannot imagine what crap mweb is giving me..

Now stop crying, no matter who you switch to you will face issues.

we do know this: We are currently delivering 38.27% more GBs on average every day to our clients on the new network than we were a month ago.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the fact that more than half the subscriber base is now on 1mps instead of 384kbp. Never trust the stats they throw at you!

Wow, I've never seen one person cry so much before, keep jumping ISP's when they give you a few small issues, I'm sure you enjoy that.

As for my feedback, I didn't even know there were issues, I mean, I've not experienced any for the past <Insert Afrihost join date here>. I've always had a good experience with Afrihost, they've never let me down, in fact, I've never needed to deal with their support crew either because I've never had an issue and I still don't. Thanks for the awesome internet experience Afrihost!

I dont use afrihost and dont plan to but will keep them in mind since seeing the CEO himself is trying to help customers and directing them to where they can get sorted.

All you cry babies need to grow a pair....seriously life isn't always roses and honey sometimes theres lemons in every company and its not that "you have problems" its about how dedicated you are to sorting out those problems that matters.

I would stick with any company that shows initiative...if I were on afrihost right now and irritated by my connection I would pm or call em to get it sorted out instead of squealing like a little girl on a public forum about it.

If afrihost did not admit and try to help then I would be pissed but as it stands now I would be glad to use them as an ISP in the future.

I used to have webafrica in the past and stuck with them for that same reason, when there was a problem they would admit it and sort it out even if it took a week.I can respect a company like that.

It is easy to talk if you are not on the receiving end. I can feel the pain of the people here. Trust me, it is not fun to get dial up speeds on a 4mbps uncapped line. Personally, I am with Openweb and are very pleased with them. I think they have had loads of signups these past days.

Maybe it is anecdotal, but since Afrihost moved to the MTN backbone, my download speeds have been flying on Openweb, who uses IS, 24/7 even without the use of a VPN server. I also experience excellent latency. Maybe the pipes have opened up since Afrihost moved to the MTN backbone? Am I wrong?

Yeah but its also not a reason to whine away whole day.

Look I've been in similar situations with web africa back in the day when for about a week or two my 384kpbs connection refused to open sites in under five minutes and guess what? I did not whine away on a forum and mess up their rep because of their willingness to help when I contacted them. That is why today if I ever get adsl again web africa will be at the top of my list and so will afrihost from now on due to their willingness to help their subscribers.

If a company has no concern for its customers well being then go ahead broadcast it on every public forum you can find, they deserve it.But any company that is willing to accommodate you and help you resolve issues is not worth creating a big cry out about.

IF YOU OWN/RUN A BUSINESS THEN YOU WILL KNOW ITS INEVITABLE TO RUN INTO PROBLEMS,the difference is in how your treat your customers when those problems arise.

Thats all I'm saying.

I was at 2 clients yesterday, both experiencing issues connecting to Google Apps for mail (using port 993 and 587).
I hope that those ports are prioritised.

Having said that, at the second client, the line speed was crawling at about 384k download, even though it is syncing at 7Mbps, and I had rebooted the modem. Telkom recreated the ADSL port and it was back to 7Mbps download. Not all the issues are Afrihost's fault, bear in mind the 384k to 1MB upgrades in the last few weeks may cause issues with exchanges becoming more congested.

I'm in total agreement. The Afrihost/axxess move to the MTN backbone was badly timed as it's going to take Telkom some time to provision extra capacity on the congested exchanges. People are overlooking the change in internet usage patterns brought about by the upgrades which is impacting other ISPs as well (including TI).

BTW before we start the "blame Telkom" game bear in mind that's going to take them some time to determine where best to provision extra capacity given their limited resources (ROI).
