Afrihost explains ADSL problems

"The average latency in Cape Town has increased marginally (by about 50ms)"

:o

The average latency in Cape Town has increased marginally (by about 50ms) as we don’t have a Cape Town IPC yet. However, we will be getting an IPC in Cape Town early in the new year which should remedy this.

--about 50ms....uhmmmmm nooooo!! let try 150ms+!

If Gian needs advice on de-prioritizing torrents (capped & uncapped accounts) I suggest he talks to TI, they've done such a good job I've moved my uncapped to axxess.

On second thoughts leave my torrents as they are :) I'm enjoying the experience although I can understand the CT gamers frustration, give them a IPC as soon as possible.

Teething problems are all good and well, but getting about 1.5% of my paid for connection speed is a bit ridiculous. Why should I pay for 4M uncapped if I'm barely getting dial up speeds? If this is not sorted out within a day or two, I'm seriously considering taking my money elsewhere.

Gian should have responded long ago - not waiting until it is almost a PR disaster.

downloaded ubuntu 12.10 server amd64 iso from SAIX host last night on a 4mb uncapped line. Maxed out @ 57KB/s

what a joke

On what planet is a 50ms increase in latency "marginal"? My pings to my dedicated server sitting in Hetzner's data centre in Cape Town used to be about 13ms, they are now sitting at 63ms. That's a 484% increase in latency. Marginal? I don't think so.

Hey Everybody

I'm sincerely sorry about the problems clients have experienced.

We're working flat out to get everything fixed 100% and we've made some changes today that we believe have already improved performance.

If you are having a problem please PM Afriman or email [email protected] and he will help you out pronto.

Thanks for your patience.

And once again sincere apologies if you were affected.

Enjoy your evening

Gian

@Pienats

Those speeds are terrible and definitely shouldn't be there. Please can you PM Afriman so that he can help you out?

Thanks!

Gian

Just plain Pathetic!

@ werny

That is pathetic. Our network is not under strain right at this moment so there must be another problem there. Please PM Afriman or email [email protected] so that we can help you out and fix the problem.

Thanks

Gian

Switch to a different port for the SSH session, speeds are now somewhat better it seems. Actually goes up to 400 KB/s every now and again.

Will restart my router now and see if that fixes the problem, I have not restarted my router since I got it 14 months ago, may be the reason for my bad connection.

Its nice to see the CEO's getting personally involved as other ceo's from other companies normally dont care .

i had terrible problems with latency etc but it seems better. i doubt afrihost would move to mtn if they knew it would cause issues for customers, i know what they capable of and im sure its gonna get better.

I must say that I've had only good experiences since the switchover to MTN. It definitely is faster for me. I have a 4mbps uncapped bundle and a few capped accounts. My line was upgraded by Telkom to 6, then 8 and now 10mbps. My Afrihost capped accounts fly. I can download at about 990KB/s on HTTP, and on well-seeded torrents. My uncapped 4mbps account downloads at about 520KB/s (on a 10mbps line) when previously I would get max 430KB/s (on a 4mbps line), obviously due to the IP and other overhead no longer being a factor.

I am one of the few happy chappies? Is there nobody else with good experiences?
