Afrihost - Gaming

Hey,

We purchased the 10gb afrihost option account few hours ago. I really like the pricing and am really happy to have the extra cap and save money.

However, I am a gamer and i never have problems with delay on my 384 line when i was with MWEB but soon as i switched over to the AFRIHOST account i have perma spikes and lag and makes it practically impossible to play. This is highly frustrating.

Now my question is, is this normal? Is there a solution and how can I do it because I don't want to have to switch accounts the whole time when i want to play DotA.

In the future we are going to install a bandwidth splitter on our linux server but that's only a while away. Any suggestions?

O and i have been unable to log into the client zone?
 
Mweb is SAIX backbone
Afrihost is Internet Solutions backbone

Theres about 10-30ms latency extra going from one to the other.

The majority of game servers are sitting on the SAIX backbone
 
but it does feel just like delay. It is actual lag spikes? like i can handle if it takes longer for the character to move etC but my guy moves across the screen in jumps and like freezes as though someone else was using my line, like when my dad is surfing but my dad wasnt on and it was throughout the game.

Otherwise would you suggest i switch accounts when i want to game?

Today everyone seemed to spike on the servers...FPS was unplayable... I dont think its your AFRIHOST account. I have bot SAIX and IS accounts and today was just not a good day for gaming.
 
As Gian told me Afrihost is shaped, which is bad for gaming anyway. I'm using my WA test account right now, but that one is shaped as well. Too bad that in this country no IP is able to give us some reliable, speedy, low latency connnection.
Well, some are, but they are unreasonably expensive :(

PS: Moshe, you'll be our hero forever if you can figure out a way to speed up our connections. Heck, buy the more expensive products from IS and relay the higher price to us. Unshaped is a must, no matter what it costs!!! I don't care as long as we're away from the 70 bucks per gig accounts.

The SAIX to IS latency isn't going to be my problem as Twilight Gaming servers are IS hosted. I will try game again later as I'm in school atm.

Both my MWEB and Afrihost accounts are shaped and i have never had a problem with connection problems. I did notice my default ping went up from 40 -> 62 but I have seen people play on higher pings.

Also someone said it was gaming servers that were the prob, I was the only one in my game having the problem so i doubt that is the problem.

Would be nice to see what moshe says :)
 
I play on Xbox Live and did experience a bit of lag on Tuesday night on both my Afrihost and Webafrica accounts. We played Gears 2 which is a peer to peer game without a central server. I hosted the game and some of the guys had definite lag and glitches. I don't think it is ISP related but just general ADSL problems from Telkom.

Your shaped and unshaped accounts should perform exactly the same to locally hosted servers as all local traffic are in any event unshaped.
 
Ok this is gonna be embarresing... since we dont play alot of online gaming. Tell me about the servers and the games that you play. If I have more information on the subject I can take that to the sys admin, who no doubtedly also don't have that much time to play due to the fact that we are always working.:P

Also just email me all the details to [email protected] and then I can forward it to them to check it out.

Geez, I can imagine shaping affecting FPS games but games like Dota shouldn't need such a low latency.
 
dude, on my afrihost acc i get a better ping to the SGS saix servers than i do on my telkom saix account
 
guys there have definitely been issues on the IS backbone this week... so regardless if you are with Afrihost or Axxess then you gonna have the same problems...

I was tearing my hair out earlier this week when it was almost impossible to play facebook poker the latency/packet loss was so so bad! :mad:

last night was back to normal though, for me anyway...

regarding latency between IS and SAIX. There was a thread a while back about how IS latency had dropped a bit, so I for one, can confirm that I am getting lower latency on my axxess uncapped express (sat) than I get on my prepaid webafrica UNshaped account...

hard to believe :sick: but true
