You can be sure MTN was the first option they explored. Somehow I doubt MTN would be chuffed with Afrihost using their network and undercutting them.

MTN is the logical choice since they already do business, but the second would be Cell C due to all the talk from their end about MVNOs and the imminent FNB network.

Then again there is the Telkom wildcard, but this seems unlikely as it would be a direct competitor to Telkom's own products and attempts to become a one-stop-shop.

I presume as with any new service there will be teething problems, but I really hope they can turn the market upside down. More competition is always a good thing. Go for it AH!

Hopefully Afrihost have proved to be the best ADSL ISP at the moment no doubt they can do that on the mobile market, ;)

Would be great if they can just link my Uncapped account to a MTN sim even if only 2GB on the sim :)

Question: Why cant we get Mobile data from one service provider and use the same sim for calls on another network .. Use VC for voice and Afrihost for data like ADSL .. Telkom for the line and Openweb for the data?

Good Job Gian, just dont try and change the world, I doubt Afrihost vs MTN SA would be pretty

As with anything we do, we will always make sure that we do all our homework thoroughly before we bring anything to market. We're still investigating our options and what is the best way to enter the market, but at this stage nothing is confirmed. At the heart of everything we do is try to make our clients lives better - so we won't touch anything that falls short of the mark.

Thanks to everyone who has been so positive since this story broke. We are very excited about this new prospect to bring the internet to more and more people :)

We'll all be disappointed big time. Trust me.

that's what some people said when AH switched from IS to MTN

barring the initial teething problem with the switchover which now appear to have been put to bed, I'm still waiting for that disappointment to manifest itself

I don't know all the intricacies of this mobile technology, but I imagine sim cards have to authenticate on a network, regardless of whether it's voice or data. At the moment, I don't think the current network infrastructure can allow sharing of SIMs. What you could possibly do is use DUAL SIM phones for data and voice.

It's also one of the reasons we want to join the market, to give people an opportunity to choose where they get their data from. We'll definitely make sure we have viable alternatives in terms of connecting if you're on a different voice network :)

Stay away from Vodacom and cell c.
just saying

Agreed. MTN is the likely host for their initiatives. If they went with Telkom, wouldn't that be a direct threat to their current relationship with MTN?

Regardless, it is quite possible that they will force the pricing toward more respectable levels. FTW.

Prophets of Doom
