I know this seems like a strange question, but given that so many people are talking about leaving Afrihost after all their mathematical symbol launching schenanegans, I stumbled across something in a comment last night that intrigued me.

MTN owns Afrihost (we knew that) and Afrihost owns AXXESS?

At first I thought it was just that Afrihost ran the Axxess website:
http://skip.w3bin.com/domain/axxess.co.za
But it's much more than that... the only clear evidence I can find is in MTN's press releases:
https://www.mtn.com/Search/results.aspx?k=axxess

It says quite clearly there in a document about the Afrihost acquisition "Afrihost and its subsidiary, Axxess DSL Proprietary Limited (“Axxess”), ..."

I know they may not be the same service / product etc; but I am sensing that people 'jumping ship' from Afrihost may not realise that they are jumping right back into the same company if they jump to Axxess.

Who else is actually all part of the same company?

Who owns Cybersmart, or MWeb even? For all I know they are actually all MTN & Vodacom businesses now, all just holding back ADSL services so that skype calls never work probably so that we stick to mobile phones with voice-packages :)

Any other linkages we should know about?

What you just discovered is actually common knowledge.

They run their network management separately though and why Axxess has been performing a lot better than AH lately.

Afrihost acquired axxess some time ago when it was teetering on the edge and had plenty of hangups. I'm sure it was in one of the circulars.

Not so bad to jump onto their other boat as long as the pricing is better and also the 3 month mobile data carryover

Sorry -- I wasn't meaning to cause a stink...

I'm more wondering: "who else is owned by other people".

Are we sure all this hopping around to the next best ISP isn't just cash-in-the-bank for MTN --> i.e. if I change from Afrihost to Axxess, I lose a month of either service or cash... but MTN has gained from both of these...

I wasn't meaning to cause a stink... but it does affect my decision --> i.e. won't be moving from Afri to Axxes like quite a few people have suggested.

And so what?

What does MTN getting cash have to do with getting a good ISP?

Lately Axxess has been performing a lot better than Afrihost. The fact MTN is involved with both is inconsequential.
