Ran a ping afrihost.com and got 98% packet loss and then like magic I ping google.com 100 times and no packet loss. Running some tracert now and things are looking much better :)

saving results to folder Afrihost working, for science :)

Glad it got better. Good to save all these tests. If it turns out there is an issue, that data over time is invaluable :)

Trace complete.

It's a little hard to hold mobile to strict guidelines for traceroutes - there are a lot more variables than DSL. However, destination latency for local under 60ms would be considered pretty good. Your upload speed is not great (looks like 3G connection to me) but that could be the coverage in the location you tested or the demand at the time :(

^ at least you only have like 1 packet lost in that trace route:)
You should see mine, packet loss city

Remember that in a trace this is physical hardware responding to pings. If the kit is busy or has higher priority jobs (ICMP is usually the lowest priority) it won't respond and that will appear as a *. A specific ping test is a better indicator of packet loss.

^ I know but I have noticed that over extended testing that when using the Afrihost APN I get a lot more stars consistently than when using MTN APN

I take it that these period of normal usage rules out my sim card as the issue?

If I have Afrihost plus, and assign the 'double my data' to a 10GB package, does the doubled data rollover as well or does it expire at the end of the month?

I think if the SIM was faulty it's unlikely performance would do anything but degrade.

Yes, all data will roll over. Just remember that double data is seen as "promotional" data, so we use paid for data first, and promotional data second, based on age.

EDIT: I'm sorry, I answered this incorrectly. Mobile Data does not roll over, only DSL data. Mobile Data Topups do roll over, but month to month data does not and neither does double data.

Sorry about giving you guys the wrong info there :(

whats this about rolling over data?

I seem to get more packet loss when pinging afrihost.com. Any reason for that?
I just run ping -n 100 -l 1000 to google.com and mybroadband.com and only lost 1% but lost 20% + when pinging afrihost.com. Ran each three times, also high latency to mybroadband.com compared to afrihost and google.

Connection speed just dropped massively.

Sorry, my bad, answered that with DSL in mind. Month to month mobile data is not rolling over just yet :(

We're making some changes to our website (we've been working on it a lot recently to improve security, etc.

There is also a slow access issue in Johannesburg. We're busy trying to sort this out with MTN :(

Yes, it's like the dial-up era all over again.

What is it with MTN, that they can't keep their data network running optimally? I've been with Afrihost/MTN for a couple of years now, and it's generally more flaky than good.

My router indicates 4G/LTE, must be the demand thingy you said :(

It's definitely not great having these types of issues. It may be resolved, my 3G seemed decent this morning. Will get confirmation if I can.

Yep, it all looks good this morning! Better than ever, in fact. Can you ask the folks at MTN to "freeze" the current settings?

:)
