Afrihost Mobile Feedback

Hey kokzn,
I am so sorry that the issue is still not sorted. I understand how frustrating this can be. Please drop me a PM with your clientzone username and your MTN/Airmobile prepaid number.
PM sent.
Really hoping this can be resolved.
Thank you.

Hope I can answer all your questions :)

1) The concept of fixed wireless is around the service, not the device. For RAIN (for example) they restrict their SIMS to devices that must use wall power and can't be moved. For Cell C, they lock you to a to a tower when you connect. So it's really that the product is intended for a fixed location, and not to be mobile.

2) It's difficult to provide guidance on the speeds - it depends on the demand in the area, how far you are from the closes tower, etc. 30Mbps is a guideline, but generally on LTE we see much higher speeds.

Thanks for the answers, AfriMan.

I'd like to sign up for the Telkom LTE option around the 1st or 2nd Sept., but want to be as sure as I can I'll have a similar scenario through Afrihost as I currently have on Telkom prepaid ; therefore, please can you / AfriFella / someone else at Afrihost advise :

1.) I assume the B525 router you supply is standard - ie. same as I bought from a Telkom shop last year - and isn't locked to the Telkom network, so can freely be used on other networks if I want to, after it's been 'paid off' ?

2.) (this might seem a stupid one, but) Do you send along with the router, a Telkom SIM or Afrihost-branded one ?
(I see from your Afrihost Mobile page you sell data yourselves, so presumed you have your own branded SIMs running on some or other network, but I may be entirely wrong) ... just want to be sure it's a Telkom SIM card ;

3.) Is the data purchased each month strictly / solely run on Telkom's network (as I have on my prepaid), and in no way linked to the "Telkom-R" roaming agreement with Vodacom, that so many seem to be having problems with ?

Thanks once again.

1) Router is not network locked or SIM locked.

2) We supply the SIM provided by the network - the Afrihost SIMS are for Air Mobile :)

3) It's the Telkom LTE service, so it may not be the same as Telkom Mobile, depending on how their network is structured.

How does the Cell C cancellation of fixed LTE service affect current subscribers with afrihost?

Great question - what's being reported in the press at the moment affects resellers through internet solutions. We deal directly with Cell C, so it's not the same.

For the moment, Cell C services will continue as normal.

We are in discussions with Cell C to determine if and how our clients might be affected. But rest assured that any official communications will come from us and not via the press.

Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that the CellC fixed-LTE is pretty much useless for streaming with 1mbps speeds reported by all users. Why don't you allow us to change over to Telkom without having to cancel the current contract and pay a cancellation fee?

Ok - so I have this 1GB free Air Mobile data. How do I use it? My MTN bundle ran out and this one did not kick in. Am I supposed to do something first ?

Change your APN to afrihost

Only MTN is listed there. Do I need to do all that manually even though this mobile data was linked to MTN?

AirMobile works with MTN yes, but the APN is your access to your data through AirMobile, since they granted it to you.

Follow these steps, its very easy:

I have done that - just not removed the MTN APN - a bit nervous to do that just in case this doesn't work. Why must I remove other APNs?

You don't need to remove it. They just say that so you don't accidentally change it and use MTN airtime for data.

On your answer to # 3, if the settings have the same options on the router get from you guys as the one I already have, then can lock it to 2300 MHz (the B525 - 65D model), which according to the following post is for Telkom only (at the moment, anyway), and should prevent Vodacom roaming :

Then there is still something missing. It doesn't work and when I click on the test settings it has the woops option.

That's not a bad idea. We would generally hope to keep our clients on the service they are happy with. But similar to RAIN, we'll most likely offer something like that in ClientZone at some point, regardless of what happens with Cell C. Always good to have some choice :)

As a few people mentioned, you just need to change your APN to afrihost. You don't need to delete your current APN, just create a new one (you can copy the MTN one) and then just change the APN name to afrihost (with no password).

Thanks, AfriMan.

I'd have to confirm that for you, but there should be no issue locking your router to 2300Mhz if you are sure you'll still get consistent service.

I followed the instruction on the website - but will do as you suggest.

As good as that sounds, there are still a lot of people experiencing slow streaming speeds on your cell c network. This looks network related, so it definitely is affecting your customers
