Afrihost Mobile Feedback

Hi @AfriMan - I ordered the Afrihost - Telkom LTE deal on the 2/09 just after 8am. Not in any major rush to receive the router & SIM, but wondering why the status is still at "Order Placed" 2 full days later, and no evidence showing that it's been packed yet or with the courier.

Are you at Afrihost still waiting for stock to come in / be replenished (Huawei B525 / Telkom SIMs) ?
I'm aware to give it 7 days, so simply wondering if any specific reason/s to do with my order.

Btw, I have a number blocking app on my smartphone, so unless Afri. contacted me via the JHB (011) no., they wouldn't get through to give feedback - I prefer not having calls, anyway. Only other way is via e-mail, but haven't received anything yet from Afri. ... or if I login to the ClientZone - hope this is a satisfactory arrangement.

Will PM you my A/c no., in case you need to specifically check-up on why my router/SIM hasn't been packed / sent out ... assuming they should've at this stage ?

Again, no rush on my part needed, so don't stress :)

Thanks for giving our LTE a try :)

It depends on the payment method you used - debit orders take longer to clear, can take up to 5 working days.

Drop me a PM, I'll check for you :)

I've given credit card details, but it is a virtual card (VCPay) - don't know if that makes a difference ?
When I set it up the card, the R1 was deducted without any errors.

Have started a "conversation" - don't know if that's the same as a PM, because the format of the forum's changed since I last sent one.

To save you replying here as well, taking the liberty of posting your response in ''conversation" section :
Looks like everything is in order and the delivery is being packed by the warehouse :)

Thanks, AfriMan :) - hope to test fairly soon & give you feedback ; assuming it goes well, it won't be used a whole lot this month (the 1st part), while the transition from ADSL to LTE continues ....

Awesome - I'm sure conversation is not same as PM.

As long as only you saw my A/c # in "conversation" ; should be the case as it did list us two as the only contacts.
Can confirm I got an e-mail stating the wi-fi details I selected have been setup, and in ClientZone this a.m. it's ready to be handed over to the courier.

Thanks for the input yesterday.

Awesomeness :)

Hi again @AfriMan - the B525 + Telkom SIM were delivered earlier on this morning. I've quite a few questions to clear up, to get a better understanding of how certain things will work :

1.) when does the 1st payment go through (on C/card) for the data made available in Sept., as it hasn't yet ?
(but granted, it's still only the 1st morning of SIM activation).

2.) is the data issued / payable for, pro-rata in Sept., as it's the 10th already ?

3.) data was available at the outset, but when I logged into the router (to adjust / check settings, especially being able to amend 4G to 3G or Auto, when required) I couldn't get very far ..... early on in the Quick Setup (which was all that was available to do at that stage) I was unable to complete step 2/2, as there were no "Next" or "Finish" buttons.

Is this because Afrihost have "locked down" the router settings so the APN works for you guys ?

Having reset the router, I can now amend things, but APN I see it set to :

Profile name : Telkom
Password : ******** (this is 8 digits, which equates to the Wi-Fi password set, I presume ?)
APN : internet

Must APN be changed to "afrihost" (and if so is Profile name : "Afrihost"?) ?
Does this in any way link back to the fact that in Afri. profile, you guys state you can't provide Telkom usage (see below, please), or wouldn't that matter whether set to "telkom" or "afrihost" ?

If I must change to "afrihost", can I keep the other APNs, or must they be deleted if possible ?
(I saw in some other Afri. thread to do with Afri. Mobile via MTN that you stated all other APNs should be deleted - that's why asking wrt this Telkom LTE setup)
If I delete them, and revert to "afrihost"will the options to adjust settings (again, changing from 4G to 3G to Auto) go away ?

4.) I've already used some data in setting it up + doing a speedtest (below) - estimated around 150MB used so far.
However, when I login to my Afri. profile, find the following :

Data Usage Unavailable
Telkom is unable to provide us with accurate and up-to-date data usage details.
This is why we, unfortunately, cannot show you any usage details at this moment.
- when does it become available, then ?
(after 1st month's usage / at the end of this month ?)

Maybe some questions are inter-linked (eg. data usage availability / reflection using Telkom vs Afrihost APN), but please answer as fully as possible, so I can better understand how this will work going forward.

Thanks - might be some more questions, but can't think of anything, yet ...

Have done a speedtest which was fine, but while it was set to "telkom" apn, so don't know if will differ if have to change to "afrihost" :

Settings : Auto (4G / 3G) ; Auto (for network)
to CPT - approx. 10am :

Ping 28ms
Jitter 12ms
Download 46.4Mbps
Upload7.2Mbps

The router is off now, as still have ADSL.
Will probably only switch it on again after all above has been cleared up, and clearer in my mind.

I hope I can answer everything - was a lot to work through :)

APN - don't change. The data moves directly through Telkom's network, so we pull your usage by your account details.

Data is allocated pro-rata. Usually works based on delivery. So you should see equivalent billing today or tomorrow at the latest. If it's a debit order, it may take a couple of days, but credit card is usually pretty much instant.

Thanks, AfriMan - also took quite some time to construct ! ; your answers were almost anticlimactic by comparison, but that's in no way a criticism :)
Only thing still unsure of right now is when (you think) the data usage will start reflecting in my profile, again, based on this quote from your website :
Data Usage Unavailable
Telkom is unable to provide us with accurate and up-to-date data usage details. This is why we, unfortunately, cannot show you any usage details at this moment.
.... as I don't want to use it again, until data use so far, starts to reflect.

EDIT : just logged back in to check, and nothing's reflecting yet.
Perhaps the better question to have answered is what the approximate turn-around-time is from the time data is used, to when it shows up in one's profile ? - if you or your tech. team is able to provide an answer, will be appreciated.

[On another note, once this has settled down a bit, will probably come back to you dealing with upgrading packages from month to month as the terms seem quite restrictive, as do the downgrade terms, with that 15th of the month cut-off date].

I believe Telkom LTE is not instant, we only getting periodic data usage updates. However, Telkom manage capping etc, so you shouldn't overrun.

I know this might lead to some complications in terms of getting real-time updates so you can top-up timeously. We are working on this with Telkom.

Thanks for coming back to me on this ; it's surprising, though, that Afri. started selling this product without putting in place a way for customers to check their CAPPED usage from the ClientZone, at the outset.
Management need to be scolded for that :eek:

This morning I checked data usage via *188# .
Telkom's SMS's came back with 3 categories of data available on the supplied SIM, which seem to be pro-rata'd, so that should be in order.

The 3 categories are :
Telkom Mobile Data
Inclusive SmartBroadband Data
Inclusive Night Surfer Bundle Data

Each have different dates of expiry.
While you sort yourselves out I'll use *188# to check on data used, directly from the "horse's mouth".

Remember that Telkom Data has anytime and nightime data, so the balances will be seperate.

We definitely would like to have real-time reports, however we have to work within the limitations of the interface we are given. However, we're working with Telkom to see how we can improve that :)

Still shows today :
Data Usage Unavailable
Telkom is unable to provide us with accurate and up-to-date data usage details. This is why we, unfortunately, cannot show you any usage details at this moment.

.. so "periodically available" is currently still "permanently unavailable" (ie. that data usage cannot be viewed in the ClientZone, even if it's outdated which would be better than nothing).

Re : "Remember that Telkom Data has anytime and nightime data, so the balances will be seperate." -
.... the thing is, I know you and others - incl. Telkom - sell it as anytime & nightime (or peak / off-peak), but all I can go by ATM is how Telkom display it, broken up into those 3 categories, when sending an SMS via USSD.

Hopefully your relev. dept. is still working on getting it setup ... otherwise I'll have to move to Axxess (the Co. you own, I know) after the 6-month obligatory period is up (to incur no charges), as they'll soon be offering a SIM-only deal on this, and I'm presuming they're already able to show usage !?

Seeing as I'm the only one ''complaining" (more like wondering atm, as I'm not overly phased about it), it's possible I'm the only one who's bought one of these packages so far from Afrihost :)

We are definitely working out. If the API change happens for Axxess it will most likely be available to us as well, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. We will definitely get there.

Hmmm - some sites (including mybb) verrrry slow to load today.

Hmmm - some sites (including mybb) verrrry slow to load today.

It's not the mobile connection. Cloudflare as a whole stopped the local CDN traffic for all it's customers except enterprise. So mybroadband, takealot and others all route to a next destination which on Afrihost is Kigali. Telkom and Rain routes to Djibouti so they are even worse.
