Afrihost Mobile Feedback

@AfriNatic - have you received any feedback from MTN, regarding my posts above.
It's now the better part of 10 days, and I've received no correspondence from either them, or your Escalations dept.

Below are some recent speedtests ; what I take away from all this is that the only consistency is that pings have remained high (30ms and over), and that download / upload speeds are all over the place, but upload generally much lower than they used to consistently be in the mid-40's.

ISP: Air Mobile
Ping: 41ms
Download: 32.12Mbps
Upload: 5.99Mbps

Signal strength still bounces around - day & night - and there are times when pages freeze & won't load, presumably because signal quality is so poor (at those times).

Therefore, still an inconsistent experience on MTN / Afrihost.

If there's no feedback from anywhere, what do you suggest I do next ?

Cancel this service & go with Telkom, directly, OR,
do you think Telkom via Afrihost / Axxess would provide LTE with sufficient stability ?

(just like it used to, not to mention just like MTN used to as well via Afrihost).

Experiencing web page freezes / ultra-slow loading times on the forum right now, while trying to post messages / links.

No feedback. The latest was that it's a coverage issue and not a tower issue as the tower has been checked and is found to be fine. Have you received any feedback with regards to your coverage complaint that you have logged?

That's what I was referring to in having not received any feedback from MTN (wrt the coverage form I filled out & sent to them).

If it's coverage (or for whatever reason), would you suggest I cancel the service ? .... because there are next to no options to change things in the router (like one can with Telkom) to different spectrum settings that can make a difference.

I'm sorry for the frustration and inconvenience. We are unfortunately bound by the coverage supplied by MTN. If they don't have plans to extend coverage right now I can offer alternatives like the Telkom simcard or maybe Pure DSL if that is an option.

If the tower was congested and there was an ETA I could have relayed that back to you with some options.

At least I now have an answer, for which I thank you.

However, I fail to see how coverage can suddenly be a factor, because as I've explained before, I had a very stable connection with very consistent speeds (mainly mid-40's down / up) as well as latency (22 - 27ms mostly).

Unless MTN decreased the coverage in my area to increase it elsewhere, if that's even a thing sometimes that's done by the networks ?

Will soon make a decision as to what to buy or sign-up for next.

I had ADSL, and last I tested before cancelling that, the line was syncing at about 23Mbps, so could feasibly go for a 10Mbps ADSL or 20Mbps VDSL option. There's also word in the area that fibre might be coming soon - Frogfoot put the cables in over a year ago, but getting it extended to a no. of houses around us has proven to be an issue.

I still like the idea of LTE if it's stable enough, because for the amount of data used in our house, I could still pay half, less than, or only slightly more depending on what was chosen, compared to the ADSL / VDSL / fibre options.

Can you answer one more thing :
Do you think there's any or much difference if I go for Telkom LTE through Axxess vs. yourselves at Afri., so I'd get much the same / similar results at any point in time ?
(ie. would I still be connecting directly to the same / closest Telkom tower in my area, whether Axxess or Afri. ?)

Thanks for all the feedback in the past.

@AfriNatic - have put the cancellation through for my MTN LTE SIM which will be carried out on / by the 1st March.
It's still irritating to use this service, as it sometimes flies, and at other times, in unusable - today's been particularly bad because of regular, numerous cut-out's.

My one question is what happens to the listing of the "Huawei B525 LTE Router" (?), details of which (for purposes of this question) are :

Order Details
Order Date: 02-09-2019
Delivery Date: 10-09-2019

Warranty: Expired 02 Sep 2020

Does the listing for it in my Afrihost profile fall away, or stay listed for good ?

i Just don't want you at Afri. coming back to me in future with something that I owe on it, or need to send it back (like happens with some other ISPs) - the original deal was that I (and others) need to pay for 6 months data after which time cancellation could be put through, and it's a long time since the 6 months ended ; was using a Telkom SIM in it at that stage.

I await your reply / confirmation that it can be kept without any comeback/s from Afrihost in future.

The hardware listing will stay there indefinitely because you got the hardware from us. We do not ask for the hardware back hence the R999 cancellation fee if cancelled before 6 months. After 6 months there is no cancellation fee.

Hi Afrihost Team @AfriNatic @AfriGuy

I have had a VPN issue unresolved for couple of years now on my Afrihost mobile number.
Only voice works fine, data doesn't work at all.
I followed all apn settings instructions to the tee. The data doesn't work on other devices, and other Afrihost sims work just fine on my phone with the same apn settings.

Here's a reference to an old thread with a similar issue:
It seems it was resolved through MTN allowing Afrihost on their side.

Can you please assist please?

Hi,

Please send me a message with your clientzone email address for me to have a look for you.

It does. Speeds depend on the device but around 520Mbps or so using the Afrihost APN and a Huawei P40 Lite 5G
Ok cool I might be passing through one of Cape town's coverage areas tomorrow (provided my 13 month old allows it), using a s21+, will see what I can get

I would suggest using the browser speedtest like speedtest.mybroadband.co.za in the browser as the app completes quicker and you don't get a true reflection of speed.

Also we have not zero rated any speedtest servers so please be mindful of that as 2GB can be consumed in 3 speedtests. You can use the MTN apn if you want to run multiple and speedtest.mybroadband.co.za is zero rated.

Driving in the dead centre of the 5g map and still 4g+

Do I need a special SIM that can do 5g or something? This one's fairly old but LTE works just fine

Any of these resemble 5g? I left since clearly it isn't happening and the area is a little dodge
