Afrihost Mobile Feedback

Uhm is this normal?

I noticed today (0730 when I checked) that when the power dropped Afrihost APN stopped working.. the default MTN internet APN still works and is how I am posting this.

Is the APN connection dead ? I’m in Cpt.
My afrihost APN is completely dead this morning. Have had to revert to MTN. Also CPT.

Same here! - Also cpt

Bad enough that Eskom has now powa, now Afrihost has no data :(

We found an issue with one of our switches in CPT that is used for Mobile Data. The switch rebooted without notice and services hasn't returned.

We added a notice and should be resolved soon.

Quick question - I’m on air mobile prepaid and just upgraded to the new iPhone 13. Will the MTN sim and afrihost APN connect to MTN’s 5G network? (According to MTN’s maps, I’m smack bang in the middle of a 5G area in Rosebank/Hyde Park, JHB). Does anyone know?

Hi,

Yes we do support MTN 5G on our apn. The speeds are also pretty good in general depending on coverage.

For iPhone it needs a carrier update to have 5G enabled. You can also call 135 from the sim to have them enable the 5G service if it's not enabled on your sim yet. Normal LTE simcards work fine on 5G.

The below screenshot is on a MTN prepaid sim in a Huawei P40 lite 5G with Afrihost apn.

Thanks @AfriNatic. I have a normal LTE SIM card that I’ve been using for over 6 years now.

I went to Settings > General > About but there was no carrier update that popped up (it says I am on MTN 48.0). I don’t know how to force a carrier update or if this is the latest version for iPhone 13?

I also tried phoning MTN 135 and spoke to two different consultants who both said that they can only activate the LTE service, but not 5G. They both said I need a SIM swap with a new SIM, but as you and others have said, I shouldn’t actually need that.

The last consultant that I spoke to said 5G can only be activated on the device side so I need to go into an MTN store or iStore to do so. Which also seems weird because if it’s device side, surely I can do it myself (I’m not iPhone/tech inept).

Any ideas on where to go to from here?

Do you see the 5G toggle under the network settings?

Settings > mobile data > mobile data options > Voice & Data gives me this. Seems that I do have the 5G option (even if I force 5G to be on, I still don’t connect)

Try changing to 5G on and see if that helps?
No luck with this where I currently stay. But to be sure it isn’t my area I will force it on and see what happens when I move around JHB this week.

The most important thing is knowing that it is possible on Afrihost mobile.

Okay great. JHB and PTA have extensive 5G coverage so if you don't pick up any 5G something must be wrong with either the SIM or the network provisioning but yes our APN works on all technologies 2G,3G,4G and 5G

After days of fiddling and driving around JHB to get 5G signal to no avail, I randomly inserted an active Vodacom SIM card into my phone, let it set up, then took it out and put my MTN SIM back into the phone and presto! 5G connected! Very stoked.

Too scared to do a Speedtest though because it will probably use 1GB ..at R69 per GB that’s a fairly expensive Speedtest haha.

Yes we don't have a zero rated speedtest unfortunately.

For Speedtest on 5G I recommend using the myMTN apn and doing the speedtest on mybroadband speedtest app or web page as the mymtn apn has zero rated it.

Also applicable for 4G / LTE speedtests ?

Will it work, because before I setup the Afrihost apn the other day for the new MTN SIM, there was no throughput.

Yes this is applicable to mobile APN.

It could be that MTN OOB block prevents finding the server so if you can load a 1mb MTN bundle just so it can load the page the actual data used in the speedtest will be zero rated.

Must be because my SIM is for fixed LTE.

Will give it a bash though, to see if I get anywhere with the process.

Thanks.

You can give it a try but Fixed LTE sims has the mymtn apn's disabled.

Thanks for confirming ; no point in trying then as I found out as much the other day, with no internet availability before changing to Afrihost apn.
