Afrihost Mobile Feedback

Our 1GB free deal just got better.

You no longer have to spend anything to claim the 1GB free. You will get 1GB anytime data free each month when you claim it in the Afrihost app until further notice. :)

Seems one can register any MTN prepaid SIM number ... it doesn't need to be issued by you at Afrihost - is that correct, @AfriNatic ?

Yes you can signup as long as you have a MTN prepaid number. You do not need to get a simcard from us.
Thanks for confirming.

I think I've one at home, but probably been expired by them, already.

Will look to get one tomorrow ; that way I can do away with getting extra Telkom data every 2 months just to cover my 2nd Telkom SIM for data when out and about, and use this MTN SIM instead.

This arrangement would justify more to me, an MTN fixed LTE upgrade through yourselves, if extra data needed, as I won't be spending on Telkom as well.

However, the 250 + 50 GB per month, Telkom LTE for R229 (for 19 hours a day) is still tempting, at least to try - but it would largely go to waste due to what we're already getting through Afrihost.

A long story, over a simple question !

No problem.

The 1GB is free and do not need any other spend so it's a nice addon to keep. Topup is only R30 per GB. It's mainly aimed at clients using it in phones when they are out and about.

If you do signup a new sim please make sure to load at least R2 airtime and make a chargable call. That will activate the sim and make sure the activation for the Afrihost APN goes through as expected.

how long do activations normally take?
Mine still says waiting for activation and "unable to load bundles due to lack of consent" even though I've already done the consent thing. @AfriNatic

@AfriNatic similar question my side, if it says "Awaiting number allocation" how long should it take before needing to contact support?

I used an existing prepaid MTN sim, which is just over a month old.

We have turnaround time for up 72 hours for the Opt-in process but i would say if in 24 hours it's not done yet drop me a pm with the number in question so I can investigate.

Thanks, another question I am curious about, if one uses Airmobile/Afrihost data on an MTN sim, how does this affect data usage when using VoLTE?

I think on the MTN network you dont pay for the data usage used by VoLTE, just the actual call, but when using airmobile, would this cause the VoLTE data traffic to be deducted from the afrihost data, or do phones bypass the APN for VoLTE traffic?

Morning,

When it comes to VoLTE the voice is carried over the LTE carrier but not as data so it's pretty much exactly the same as a voice call over 3G or 2G just done over LTE now. Your APN data will be separate.

Hi again, @AfriNatic

The MTN SIM I bought has been provisioned & I've been through the process of setting up the APN details.

After rebooting the phone, any error messages I had went away and data is definitely coming off from the SIM, as evidenced by the screenshot from your app - 2 speedtests I did.

However, what I find strange is that the network in the speedtests is listed as Vodacom, which is my main SIM, and only use for calls and SMSs ; I've no data loaded to that card and my airtime balance I don't think has changed as a result of the speedtests.

I have SIM #2 slot to use for data, which is the new MTN SIM running on your network, so surely the speedtests should be narrated as Airmobile instead.

Have you any ideas as to why this is occurring & how to remedy it.

Please refer to screenshots.

Btw, in Android 11 there doesn't seem to be an option to delete all other APNs, so I'm left with other items as Afrihost which is now set as the default.

EDIT - subsequently deleted screenshots as weren't required based on the answer received, a few posts down.

This should be :

Slight adjustment here :

After rebooting the phone, any error messages I had went away and data is definitely coming off from the SIM, as evidenced by the TWO screenshotS from your app - 2 speedtests I did.

Hi,

This is a know issues with the Mybroadband speedtest app in dual sim phones. If you disable the Vodacom sim and re launch the app it would show MTN.
