Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

Latest mybb article, Vodacom 5g 200+200 at R999.

Really hope our LTE packages get better soon else 4g will become useless in comparison to 5g

Anyone else getting really bad connectivity on their Afrihost Fixed LTE MTN package lately? It starts at 5pm every night and comes right at about 8am the next morning, fine for the day, then starts again at 5pm.
There may be some congestion on the area network. A lot of homes may begin running high data traffic in their homes at around these times but can you confirm what types of speeds you're getting? Perhaps PM me a screenshot of the speed tests you've been running?

I installed my Poynting antenna Saturday afternoon. Swivelled it around until I got the best signal and fixed it in position. My signal strength used to be around -115dBm, now it is -69 dBm. Speed has increased quite a lot as well. I see that I get LTE-A at times, but mostly just LTE. What is the difference?

PS. Don't EVER ask MTN technical department which cell mast is used for fixed LTE! I innocently told them that I wanted a direction to point my antenna to. Boy, did I get a grilling from them. They k@kked me out and was very abusive. I listened for a while and just put the phone down. Dumbasses!

Hi Guys, I want to give a follow up on the MTN "toys out the cot" saga above. I got a call from a very nice gentleman at MTN technical services yesterday. I explained to him what happened on Saturday morning with the other rude dude from MTN. He apologized and said that it was very unprofessional of him.

He said that of course I am allowed to fit an external antenna. Nothing wrong with it. He also told me exactly where the three MTN masts are in Sedgefield and that I can pick and choose the one that gives me the best signal/speed.

Now, here is the interesting thing. MTN does NOT tower lock you on fixed LTE anymore. You can move your router anywhere now. The router and sim are however married. You can not swop sim cards.

They (MTN) are sending a team out to my house to look at installing a booster in my house due to the horrible signal that I am getting on voice calls.

Thought you all may find it interesting.

Thanks for the info, I've noticed this too, as I havent been locked out of my routers connecting to MTN in a month, even though they roam between towers.

I've had similar experience with MTN where they were incredibly unhelpful in helping me with an antenna direction.

The 50GB Afrihost Pure LTE topup costs R300. I pay for my service using a debit order and the topup data is active within a minute or two of me purchasing it. I have bought at least four topups and have never had a problem with them being activated automatically.

If you have any topup data left over at the end of the month, it will be used up before the new anytime data is consumed. If you still have night time data remaining from the previous month I think this might be used up before the topup data so it might be possible to arrange for the topup data to be only used as anytime data by keeping a positive balance for the night time data from the previous month. For most customers, anytime data is much more valuable than night time data.

I haven't had any problems with the Afrihost Pure LTE package. The new monthly data allocations have always come through exactly at midnight on the first of the month and the topups have been loaded reliably. No data has ever gone "missing" at the start of the month.

I would be extremely happy with the 200+200GB service, apart from the price!

You might have to wait a few days for the SIM card to arrive. In my case it took exactly a week as I was paying using a debit order and the service had just been launched. If you pay with a credit card the process should be much quicker.

Is this true. Afriman can you confirm?
[/QUOTE]
That is honestly news to me.
I will have to follow up on this.

Thanks for the heads ups. I doubt things have changed but I double check and let you know.

For Axxess the APN is ws.axxess.fwa

After two days I figured out it's actually ws.youraxxesslte.fwa

Hope that helps someone else.

EDIT: My bad, I remembered wrong so went to check. It is: ws.yourfixedlte.fwa

Question:

Will Afrihost Fixed LTE work with my B535 or B311 router.

I see they are also CAT 11 routers and advertised as fixed LTE routers. Especially by Telkom

Don't be so sure - ordered my MTN SIM from Afrihost on the 5/05/2020 using a credit card and only expecting delivery today, so that's 14 days later. Afrihost state 3 - 7 days when you put the order through, and I've seen 7 - 10 days, elsewhere, but this is already considerably much longer.

Also, it's supposed to be between 9 - 11am, and so far, not a peep out of the courier.
After 11am, will have to get on the phone to them ... or Afrihost.

We'll see. I got a call from the courier today to say have RICA stuff ready.

They also phoned me, last Thurs., if I remember correctly.
Was hopeful during the call it would be a Friday delivery, and at most, on Monday.
But they gave themselves plenty more time ...

Live update :) - have just got SMS from courier that they're experiencing delays, and will contact soonest ; at least they're sending messages out.

EDIT : SIM has arrived within the allotted time, give or take.

The only thing of slight concern, is that the Nano part of the SIM which fits into the Micro shell (after looking up on the i/net), is a very flimsy fit as it all came apart when I detached the SIM from the MTN plastic holder.

It doesn't seem as robust as the original MTN SIM I got for speed testing, last year (might be my imagination, but even the yellow colouring is a bit different).
My main concern is putting this SIM into & taking it out of the router, on the odd occasion, and the Nano part getting stuck !

Careful if you get something similar .....
