Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

Status
Not open for further replies.
For this month I downgraded to a premium uncapped account, because on paper and from the fine print on the Afrihost website it looked like a good option. Sadly the fine print is a lie (or so it seems), specifically the fine line (lie) between under strain and high utilization of the network.

When I said I cannot do Android updates it's thrown back that I could be experiencing shaping. This whole experience made me realise that I would always get that statement and would never know if it's true shaping or network issues.

So now I've upgraded back to my Business account and with great amazement I still cannot do Android updates this time of the evening. The rest of the day it's fine obviously.
So now I wonder. What's up Afrihost? Still shaping?

Logged ticket yesterday about this, but have not received a peep back: ASZ-379-41701
Sort this out please so that you can actually say you deserve the money I pay you.

And while I'm on a role I also cannot access corporate emails hosted on office 365.

And before you give me the exchange BS.

Ive also noted strange latency at night on certain things lately that I report just above your post. Specifically Diablo 3. I ping the Blizzard servers and it seems fine:

The only thing that bugs me is the 9th hop. That switch is very very high. The whole day the net is fine and then at 8:30... boom.

This happened a few months back but a lot more people reported it and it turns out there was something wrong and Afrihost fixed it. Hope its not the same thing again.

I think we're making progress. Only 35 hours left to download 239Mb. I've done 448Kb in the last 20 minutes.
Speed tests running full speed and YouTube 1080 running fine too.

Business accounts are also subject to shaping now as per new policy on the Afrihost website.

"2 - Shaping:
- Home Uncapped packages are subject to throttling should a user have reached their monthly threshold and our network is under strain.
- Premium Uncapped packages are not subject to throttling or monthly thresholds, and will enjoy full speed real-time services under all normal circumstances, but may be subject to shaping of downloads should the network be under strain.
- Our intention is not to shape Business Uncapped packages, however shaping can be applied during times of network congestion. When applied, only non-realtime, non-interactive services will be affected by shaping, to offer the best possible experience to users when resources are strained. Business Uncapped users also have access to the Business Optimisation feature in ClientZone, which restricts P2P traffic specifically to ensure that business-critical services perform at the highest possible levels."

Is Afrihost still not able to offer Static IP's on capped Fibre accounts. Axxess offers this. Just so much of a mission to cancel with afrihost and take up with Axxess. Will be so much more convenient if they offer it.

I'm afraid not. :(

At the moment only our Business Uncapped accounts have access to Static IPs.

How long should it take to upgrade a 2mb line to 4mb? Order placed Sunday 7th (and taking into account the public holiday).

Hey AG, since we're all busy with wording issues and whatever else. I have one question. How long does it take to get a telkom ADSL line upgraded to 4mb? Sitting on almost 3 weeks with a request in for you guys to bumb the speed up and I'm still stuck on 2mb...

Telkom has had to start processing quite a few line regrades manually over the past two or three months, and this has meant that regrades usually take around 5 to 10 working days to finish. :(

HartsockZA, three weeks is definitely too long, can you please PM me your line number and I'll check what's going on.

At least the tracert is not dying tonight. But still, browsing any local content on M-Webs network this evening is a joke. Just look at this latency. Perfect until it hits Optinet's network.

The 9th hop is where the connection breaks out to the undersea cable, but there shouldn't be any problems with Diablo 3 or any other Battle.net game for that matter.

Have you been experiencing the latency spikes at a specific time of day regularly?

Not sure if anyone else has noticed anything odd, but around 20:30 every single night for the last 3 or 4 nights, on the dot, international latency becomes unplayable. I go from a 170/180 average on Diablo 3 to around 400/500, sometimes higher and it does not go away until like 11:00 or Midnight.

It only seems to be Diablo 3 though. Path of Exile is solid at 160, The Division is solid too. Very odd that its only 1 game ?

Wow... That's not cool. Has this been happening with any other Blizzard games?

So you see this why people get upset and frustrated with Afrihost support. You basically dismiss people's complaints against the first possible thing and not consider everything that is said.

I make it clear in all my posts that I get no throughput. Not throttled/shaped, which according to the 18% download shaping should still give me some throughput. We're talking 10min+ to download 400Kb. I also cannot even connect to office 365. This only happens during the hours of roughly 20h - 23h. This cannot be shaping and I wonder how it relates to the peering issues you've been having.

We try and give as much info as we can reasonably give, so we are not dismissed, but still we get dismissed.

Hi AfriGenie

Every night this week from around 20:00 / 20:30 / 21:00 through around 23:00 / 23:30 the ping goes from a solid 170/180 to around 450/1000 and it is very strange.

Last night the moment it happened on Diablo 3, I logged out and logged into Path Of Exile (Solid 160/170 with no issues), The Division (Solid 180/200 with no issues), tried a German BF4 server, 210 to 240 average with no issues.

It really only seemed to be Diablo 3. There was no slowdown on international at all, it was working 100% and pinging/trace routing to the Blizzard EU websites were mostly stable. I dont have an active WoW subscription so couldn't check that.

I guess I will see if it happens tonight again and run a bunch of test. Yes it does seem to be happening at specific times.

I will test a few Blizzard games tonight if it happens again and let you know. Ill re-sub to WoW and see if it happens to WoW as well. From what I know the D3 and WoW/Overwatch/HotS servers are all in the same datacenter in France/Belgium/Germany.

For reference I was using the London based Path of Exile servers and the Division servers are somewhere in the UK and France as far as I can tell by IP traces.

You definitely don't need to re-sub for WoW, I was just wondering if you had any other Blizzard games to test. I may need to get our Team to contact you directly.

We did get some strange results a while ago, and we had to get in touch with Blizzard to resolve it.
