Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

Thanks for the offer - no Telkom does - and they have normally been good at fixing problems - but they are on strike - and even if AH "manages" the line - you actually cannot do without Telkom (and their subsidiaries and contractors) to fix the problem. You can just nag them on my behalf...I know. ;)

Thanks for offering though...this is just a mess.

Any hop above 200ms is FUBAR DSL service delivery.

Yep... It's very frustrating, I know! :( Keep us posted with your progress.

Every hop beyond this server 169-0-44-1.ip.afrihost.co.za is currently +830ms per hop...

Both 1Gb is free. Both on IS backbone. I prefer the gridhost one as it is completely unshaped.

Keep on logging those faults and keep the proof incase they ever wanted to charge you unnecessary call out fee and to get credit notes for service interruption from billing.

I was able to get partial credit for exchange congestion like 2 years back when my exchange was congested.

I'm impressed that you got a credit for congestion! It shows what a bit of persistence can get you. ;)

Thanks - going to try that to see if ISP makes any difference to using the other 3 ISPs from this site...if it doesn't then its purely exchange related.

And that won't get fixed before Telkom upgrades the nearest exchange which is less than 2km from the site.

And yes I have been keeping a log of this - right now I'm not even willing to pay the DSL line rental as I am not getting ANYTHING near speed wise to what I am paying for.

Non stop speedtests showing sub 1Mbps speeds on a 4Mbps connection for more than 50% of the time I think billing got tired of me and just gave me the credit.

Did not spend any money to get it too as 10210 is free from the landline. Did take a lot of time though. Non stop faults and technicians being dispatched like 6 or 7 times and then they just started calling before coming out. :)

Yeah ATM uplink gets congested so quick especially with 4Mbps rental being so cheap and high capped unshapped accounts being so cheap too people are using more bandwidth than before.

Your only hope is that there are plenty of people on that link with plenty of complaints for them to upgrade to metro ethernet.

At the very least they should throttle the bandwidth HOGS that are causing the congestion - but because of the products they are selling (selling capacity they Don't have) - the normal low end bandwidth users get penalised like this.

And I'm not paying for their fibre roll-out like I did when DSL was first introduced in RSA, as I will never need fibre to home - But man they milked us to pay for the Telkom DSL infrastructure upgrades back in the days.

Once bitten - twice shy. The bandwidth hogs can pay for the fibre roll-out this time, but I suspect its still too expensive for them all - so they are sticking to the copper DSL route- hogging all of the bandwidth DSL side. And at this site - fibre is not an option Yet... So that IS the BIG problem I suppose. The DSL system in place can't cope. LOL

So - using WebAfrica and connecting using their network, the ping dropped to 200ms on connection. Then within 5 seconds it climbed back up to the same averages as Afrihost.

So there you have it. Telkom exchange related.

That's not cool at all. :( But, at the same time - I'm happy that you managed to isolate and confirm the issue.

Very frustrating problem. 2 months ago I had the same tracert results and even worse most of the time.

I spoke to Telkom every day during that time and the TelkomZa rep on mybroadband. ( he was very helpful)

4 Weeks ago Telkom shifted me to a new ESR and ADSL2+.

Everything has been perfect on the line ever since.

So just bug them every day. Hopefully it gets sorted asap

Cant wait to play this game, running at full speed.

Why is AH's DNS server doing a port scan attack on my pc?

2016-8-24 9:26:13 firewall Warning 0 Detect UDP port scan attack, scan packet from 169.1.1.2.

Great to hear your exchange stuff got fixed up :)

Why would you force GDMT?

Best to leave it on auto.

ADSL Modulation Type

Considering that I have tested all the modulation types and the "difference" it makes while using this Telkom exchange...there is no point in ticking anything else. The maximum capability of the connection is below downstream 8.0 Mbit/s and upstream 1.3 Mbit/s even at its very best minute/hour.

Understanding ITU G.992.1 or ADSL (G.dmt)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G.992.1

ADSL2 or even ADSL2+ is just a pipe dream on this exchange. So Telkom must be laughing at other customers using this exchange and supposedly "getting" MORE than ADSL (G.dmt) spec.

They are just paying more per month...not sure if that's impressive at all.

But forcing my connection to G.DMT (G.992.1) or also called ADSL1 makes the connection less unstable, on an already dodge exchange.

Specific to this problematic Telkom exchange - ADSL Modulation Type

G.Dmt Enabled
Internet Connection Status: Connected

Telkom ACS server is busy configuring the router

Downstream Upstream
Line Coding(Trellis): On On
SNR Margin (dB): 163 130
Attenuation (dB): 335 195
Output Power (dBm): 173 91
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 4448 900
Rate (Kbps): 2048 512

G.Lite Enabled
Internet Connection Status: Disconnected

T1.413 Enabled
Internet Connection Status: Disconnected

ADSL2 Enabled
Internet Connection Status: Disconnected

AnnexL Enabled
Internet Connection Status: Disconnected

ADSL2+ Enabled
Internet Connection Status: Disconnected

So G.Dmt is the only ADSL Modulation type that keep this site connected, and stable. But the DSL router on my end - can't fix the problem on Telkom's end.

Not sure modulation will with the root cause, being congestion, though :(

Well my friend - G.Dmt or old ADSL1 is ALL that works... no other modulation type on this DSL exchange works.

The result of selecting anything else = no connection.
