Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

Hey Peter

Sounds like an odd one. I use Slack for most of the day and don't seem to see any issues.
Is Slack the only service/ app that's an issue or does your overall experience worsen during these times?

In the mornings Slack is fine. Haven't checked the afternoon yet (I'm not typically home at that time). In the evenings there USED to be a general slowdown of sites such as Facebook that *did not* show up in pings (i.e. pings remained largely low, sites wouldn't load). Now it is, for me, most noticeably Slack and, as I mentioned, the connection to my workplace on Neotel (which might be something to do with their peering connection - I really don't know at this stage). I'm going to try and script a monitor for this problem, but simulating an app isn't easy (Slack is using a HTTPS connection so it is not easy to replicate what it is doing with a script).

BTW. One common thread I've seen between my Facebook problems and this one is the use of the cloudfront and other elements of AWS - the problem seems to often involve connecting to and making use of content hosted on such CDN sites.

Let's check for overall issues first before concentrating on Slack :) I haven't seen any issues with the service from my end.

Have you been able to run any tests with our team?
Are other downloads slow or is it only torrents?

I ran continuous tests for 2 months, and I was told things were optimised, and nothing changed. This only seems to affect torrents as I stated. In the end I reported this issues to Critical Care in April, submitted all the tests required, and still it was never resolved.

I can only think this relates to shaping in your case.

The same story!
I was complaining nearly two month and AFRIHOST peoples even can't read my emails!
I submit test results to support team and have reply to run ping test.
My email INCLUDES long time ping and traceroute test result (BTW - programm UOTrace made 15y ago to ping ant trace game servers - can recommend!).
So the issue exist, but there is no peoples with the knowledge to resolve this.
As i stated before - everything working fine on others networks - the same hardware and software - tested on many occasions.
What i found that servers jhb-up7.ip.adsl.co.za and jhb-net1.ip.adsl.co.za very unstable - ping vary from 7 to 700 msec. But this is not the issue i complained.

As previously discussed, we need to see a traceroute during the evening when your experience worsens.
You can also include a ping to bras.afrihost.com to see the latency to your exchange.

My "experience" is 24/7.
Not in the evenings!
24/7 50kps
Only on the AFRIHOST connection

Test - 100 packets:
HOST IP PACKETS PING
bras.afrihost.com 155.239.255.250 100 / 100 7ms / 21ms

The traceroute in your ticket seems to show much higher latency on your early hops though.
Are you able to paste more tests here or in the ticket this evening?

It is nothing to do with the ping!
24/7 i have full speed on the speedtests and downloads. All webpages opens instantly.
Issue with the video from webpages
24/7

Have you tried switching around DNS servers?
Is the experience the same when using another ISP?

Precise example of the AFRIHOST reply!
As i stated before - everything is OK with other ISP from different countries.
DNS servers change tested many times - the same results.

The results in your ticket seem to show otherwise though, and show extremely high ping early on.
As there has been a substantial amount of troubleshooting on the ticket you have open I can only recommend to continue to chat to our team there - I see our team have also queried your results with Telkom.

It's not our intention to shape business, however if the network becomes contended P2P will be shaped.

So why wasn't this stated earlier and I could have saved myself useless testing and reporting, what are the benefits of a business account hen, if I can get similar service from a capped account, which also gets free data added, business seems to be a real waste of money

You can review our shaping policies here.

2 - Shaping:
- Home Uncapped packages are subject to throttling should a user have reached their monthly threshold and our network is under strain.
- Premium Uncapped packages are not subject to throttling or monthly thresholds, and will enjoy full speed real-time services under all normal circumstances, but will be subject to the shaping of downloads when there is a high demand on the network.
- Our intention is not to shape Business Uncapped packages, however shaping can be applied during times of network congestion. When applied, only non-realtime, non-interactive services will be affected by shaping, to offer the best possible experience to users when resources are strained. Business Uncapped users also have access to the Business Optimisation feature in ClientZone, which restricts P2P traffic specifically to ensure that business-critical services perform at the highest possible levels.
