I was told to set my DNS settings as they were best suited for people down in the South.

Also I was watching a live stream on YouTube gaming so it's going to be difficult to recreate the conditions. I decide to try YouTube streaming as Twitch through your routing has always been bad. In theory streaming off of YouTube should be better as they have servers nearby no?

I've seen exact same problems with other DSL users in a 15km radius from that site. All DSL users regardless of ISP.



If DSL can manage hops of 10-20ms per hop - then that shows what its CAPABILITY is when its working well. And then I mean from the router - to the exchange to one of your DNS servers. So the last mile has the capacity...when the exchange is not falling over.

But I'm sure Telkom MSANs (multi-service access node) at exchanges will manage their fibre throughput also. And not just the DSL copper.

Definitely not ideal. When - generally speaking - are you seeing the spikes in latency?

When the new network rolled out originally, yes, those were the DNS Servers in the South, however, we've recently started rolling out additional DNS Servers.

In most cases Youtube should definitely offer better streaming, as there local CDNs that host the Youtube content.

Seeing as that is cleared up, is the blame being put on the servers I was being routed through?

I'm also changing my DNS settings as per your recommendation.

Setting the DNS on auto, will make sure that you have the best possible routing available, it's entirely possible that the routing was a bit off.

With Youtube Gaming there is a live element, as someone is broadcasting the stream from overseas, with regular Youtube content being available on the CDNs and caches. Even if Youtube has local servers - unlike Twitch - the stream is still very reliant on international bandwidth.

You can remove the cancellation right up to the 31st of August. I guess it just depends on which ISP you want to log a fault with.

Well you would need to look into Axxess too because the gaming performance is identical to Afrihost. High ping 400ms to Europe but ONLY in the evenings from say 6pm to 9pm ish....

Tried both Axxess and Afrihost on a 20Mbps VDSL line in Richards Bay and a 4Mbps adsl line in Durban both give the same performance and high latency to the same server.

Congestion or a link that is getting congested if not your network then your peering partner but the traceroute looks like the bouce between JHB and CPT.

Why must traffic got from Durban to JHB to CPT then only go oversea? Causes latency for no reason.....

Not aware of any overall issues from our end, are there any tests I can take a look at?

I don't. Don't even know in which European country it is hosted but anyone playing League of Legends on EUW using Afrihost should know what I'm talking about. It's not high ping all the time but mostly just between those times.
